Advantages: Glossy hair

Disadvantages: Hard to use and little colour

After reasonable, yet ultimately disappointing results from the Trevor Sorbie Colour + Brunette shampoo I decided to take a chance on another product from the same range which promises more in terms of colour delivery. Unlike the shampoo which is designed simply to enhance natural or coloured brown hair the Colour + Glosser is designed to actually add a bit of colour (and shine) with colour building over 4-5 washes.

To me this sounded rather like a step shy of the old-fashioned temporary colours (such as Shaders and Toners). It was worth a go.

The usage instructions were straight-forward. Wash hair as usual (although, of course the shampoo in the range was recommended). The excess water should then be squeezed from the hair and the glosser smoothed over the hair from root to tip. The glosser should then be left on from 3-5 minutes and then the hair rinsed and styled as normal. Simple. Um, no.

The glosser is dispensed from a flip top tube rather like a tube of hand cream. It's easy to get out. The first thing you'll notice is that the glosser is a deep red colour (oddly I'm reminded of congealing blood!). The next thing you'll notice is that this glosser is extremely slippery. Imagine holding a globule of mercury in your hand - that's what this is like. The glosser is extremely viscous and seems to gloop together very much like globules of mercury. Here comes problem number one. Getting it onto your hair.

Because the glosser is so gloopy it doesn't spread in your hand like a shampoo or conditioner. You risk loosing the glosser into the sink/bath/shower or plonking it in one great mound on your hair. Assuming you manage to get it on your hair you'll find problem number two.

The glosser doesn't lather at all and is extremely difficult to spread throughout your hair. Forget root to tip, just spreading it will be an achievement. It felt like I was pulling putty through my hair. Don't get me wrong, the consistency of the glosser is nothing like putty but once it hit my hair it just seemed to drag though and was almost impossible to spread.

OK. So you do the best you can and then wait the 3-5 minutes and rinse. Rinsing the product off is not too bad. As there's no lather you just rinse until the water runs clear.

It's worth noting that this product can stain so if you've some on your hands make sure you rinse it off when you're waiting for the colour to develop. Also, if you get any on grout etc you'll need to get it off as soon as possible to prevent staining. I'd also recommend using an old or dark towel to dry your hair off after rinsing just in case!

After use my hair did feel quite soft and there was a distinct smell of the product. Rather like the shampoo in the range the scent is rather earthy and not particularly appealing. It's not awful though.

I dried my hair as usual and after the first use my hair did seem to be a bit glossier (or maybe it was wishful thinking) but there was no noticeable colour change. I persevered over the following days and, after about 4 days I could see a bit more red in my hair but I did have to look hard. I did also notice that those few "distinguished" hairs had a little bit of a pinky tint to them. Not sure I liked that!

The colour (or what was there) seemed to stay firm and there was no marking or staining of pillows (as could be the case with, say, colour mousse).

Overall I don't think I'd recommend this product. It does appear to gloss but not colour very much and I started with quite glossy hair in the first place. It doesn't have a redeeming nice smell and doesn't seem to leave the hair in any better condition than it would have been anyway. It's also very, very hard to use!

Not recommended.

Summary: Promised so much yet failed to deliver
