Advantages: Leaves hair shiny
Disadvantages: Hair gets greasy quickly and loses volume
My already long hair has had a bit of a growth spurt recently so I have decided to make the most of it's length and opt for smooth sleek styles, in addition to the odd day when I can bother myself to spend time making it curly/ wavy/. Because I use heat styling products it's essential I use a product on my hair which makes hair shiny yet protects it from heat damage. So I decided to try Trevor Sorbie Straightening Addict Protect, Flatten & Shine Spray which I received as a present last Christmas in my stocking..... (yes you read that correctly, I'm 23 and still having a Christmas stocking)
***What does it do?***
The Protect, Flatten and Shine spray is designed to smooth unruly hair and prevent it getting frizzy. It is stated on the product label that the spray will nourish and protect hair and form a shield between hair and straightners. This is to give sleek smooth styles.
***Packaging***
The spray comes in a 200ml plastic bottle. The plastic is clear so you can see how much product is inside. The bottle has a pump spray nozzle which allows you to spray the desired amount of product onto your hair. The spray inside of the bottle is a pink colour which looks great against the clear/ white opaque label on the front of the bottle. The Trevor Sorbie branding is visable but overall the design on the bottle is very simple.
Covering the spray nozzle is a plastic lid. I have found that the lid comes off very easily so if you are travelling and carrying this spray about with you, there is the chance that the lid may come off or you may lose it all together.
***Price***
This product was a present so I am not sure of the exact price paid but I have seen a 200ml bottle in Boots for £4.49. It is possible to purchase a smaller bottle of the spray which costs around £1.99.
A number of stores stock this product such as Boots, Superdrug and larger Tesco stores.
***The Product***
In order to protect hair from heat damage, spray hair in sections with the product and then straighten. The spray can also be used after straightening to make hair even more shiny and glossy.
The spray is light pink in colour but sprays onto the hair like water. When you spray the product it is not as greasy as some hair serums but does have a slightly greasy feel to it and you can feel this on your hair. I prefer the Aussie heat defence products as these spray onto the hair and feel just like water. Although the hair did feel smooth even before straightening and frizz had already disappeared.
Once thing that I really did not like about the product was that it had a very strong scent. This was quite unpleasant as it was quite a sharp chemical scent and after spraying the scent was apparent for quite a while. If you don't use this in a well ventilated room you are likely to catch your breath.
After applying the spray to my hair I straightened my hair and was pleased that my hair did not make that sizzling noise as I put the hair straightener onto my hair (like when you add food to a hot frying pan for those of you that have never experienced this) . This occurred with a Mark Hill "protecting " product I used and I have become worried that some of the straightening sprays actually fry my hair and damage them more than not using them. I'm pleased to say that this does not occur with the Trevor Sorbie, Protect Flatten and Shine spray.
***Overall***
After using the spray on my hair and straightening my hair (and even when I used the straightener to create waves) my hair looked noticeably more glossy and had a shine too it. Not a mirror like shine but a healthy shine all the same.
In comparison to other heat protection sprays that I have used I found that the Trevor Sorbie product made my hair lose volume quite quickly. When I created waves using my straighters they dropped out and my straight styles looked very sleek and shiny but it made my hair lose volume and look quite flat. The TRESemme, Lee Stafford and Aussie products do not cause this same effect and hair is equally as shiny.
I have used the product on my hair after I have straightened before too and would not recommend it. This made my hair greasy and looked very limp. My hair is thick but more because I have lots of fine hair rather than my hair texture being particularly coarse and thick. I think if you do have thick or coarse hair it is probably more beneficial to spray hair after you have straightened too in order for it to remain frizz free and shiny. For those with finer hair spraying after will make your hair shiny but will make it look lank as the product will weigh it down too much. I'm glad that this was a present as I don't feel like I have wasted my own money on it but after I have used the product up I will not be purchasing a replacement.
Summary: Protects hair from heat and gives shine but also takes away volume
