Advantages: smells divine, lasts forever
Disadvantages: tangles hair
I’m not a Lush addict, as so many other people seem to be. I always thought the main reason for this was that the nearest Lush store to me is over 50 miles away. But after trying one of their products, I have to say that the illusion of grandeur that other reviewers had given me has been shattered. I am unimpressed with my item; however I won’t let this deter me from purchasing again.
So what is the product that failed to live up to its reputation? It was the Ultimate-shine shampoo bar.
On visiting a Lush store I was like a child in a candy store. Sniffing things, trying things and generally doing all the things that girls like to do when faced with a store filled with such beautiful smells. Unfortunately I only had a couple of pounds in my pocket (I’m still looking for a job- if you can help me!) so I had to choose just one product to take home with me. There was something eye-catching about the display of Shampoo bars, and the very concept attracted me, so I looked at the various names and settled on the Ultimate shine bar. My hair is quite dull at the moment and after the wonderful Lush reports I’d heard I had great hopes for the shampoo bar.
It smelled absolutely gorgeous. I’ve since found out that the scent is elemi and ylang ylang oils, and violet oil which is supposed to calm stressed people. I have no complaints about the scent. It is almost edible. Appearance wise, the bar is a cream colour with little gold sparkly bits dotted throughout. It is small, about seven centimeters in diameter and retails at £3.60 which is very reasonable in my opinion. Leaving the store I was happy with my purchase and could not wait to try it.
The instructions to using the Shampoo bar are very simple- you wet your hair and rub the bar around your head around three times, this creates the lather, and from there you just rinse as normal. This works for me, although I find three sweeps of the shampoo bar leaves a massive amound of bubbly lather on my head. People may like the feeling of this, but my hair dresser once told me that the more lather a shampoo makes, the more damaging it may be for your hair as it contains a lot of detergent. I’m confused about this, as Lush products are so natural. Surely they should not damage my hair? Anyway, the point is, I’m not keen on loads of bubbles, so when I use this bar now I tend to keep to one circular sweep as that is more than enough lather for me.
As I mentioned before the bar smells delicious, and it really comes into its own when you use it in the shower. The small glittery particles within the bar seem to disappear when you lather, but that is to be expected. Rinsing out the lather from your hair leads to that squeaky sound, you know, when you’re hair is literally “Squeaky clean” But there is no matching conditioner for this product so what you are left with (if you have fine hair like mine) is a load of tangles.
I tried using this without a conditioner, and although my hair looked super-clean it was a nightmare to comb. I pulled half of the hair from my head trying to comb this out. When I did get it styled and dry it looked a little shinier than normal, but I wasn’t worth the pain! Now when I use the bar, I use my Tigi conditioner afterwards. The shiny effect of the shampoo is not as visible, but at least I can get the comb through it!
I’ve used this quite a few times now, as I’m determined to get the use from it, however I won’t be rushing out and buying it again (although it seems to last forever too!) . Instead I will purchase a liquid shampoo the next time that I am in Lush. I adore the small of this product and it is so compact it is very travel friendly, but no shampoo is worth going without conditioner for. Oh, and my final piece of advice- don’t let your dad confuse it with his bar of soap for his shower... he won’t appreciate being covered in shampoo suds from top to toe like the marshmallow man. Well my dad didn’t anyway!
