“ Brand: Umberto Giannini / Type: Styling Products „
After blasting my hair twice a day for two years with the straightening irons, it's developed a rather frazzled look. So I've decided to work with it instead of cooking it to within an inch of its life- yes folks, I'm going back to my roots, I'm going curly!
However, I don't have the beautiful natural curls that those lucky people are blessed with. Oh no, my hair is what you'd call wavy but unruly- it's a bit of a rebel is my hair! So I need that little bit of extra help to achieve true curliness.
When I saw Umberto Giannini's Curl Friends range I was initially sceptical about the claim that their products 'do what they say'. Having used his Straight and Chic range I was not inclined to agree with this statement! However, the claim that Curl Friends would 'care for and style existing curls and create curls and waves to straighter hair' was pretty impressive to me (and even better there was a 3 for 2 offer in Boots!) so I loaded up my basket with the Curl Friends Scrunching Jelly, Conditioner and Curl Developer Mousse.
The best thing about this range in my opinion is that it's PINK! But I realise that this alone isn't going to win over the more discerning members among you so I'll carry on! I tend to use the Scrunching Jelly after washing my hair and using the Curl Friends Conditioner (although it does work well with other conditioners, I find this one does actually get the best curling effect)
There's no complicated styling needed to use this: you simply apply to towel dried hair, turn your head upside down and then scrunch dry with your fingers or blow dry with a diffuser. The gel is quite runny and doesn't have as much of that characteristic gel stickiness as other gels I've used. It spreads easily over your hands and distributes nicely through your hair- a little goes a long way! I find that a 20p sized blob is enough to cover my long and very thick hair, any more and your curls will become a bit hard and crunchy! Not a good look!
So, now it comes to the crunch, did it really 'do what it said'? Well, in a word, yes! Obviously you're not going to achieve perfect ringlets with this, the effect it gives is much more relaxed- more of a tousled, just-had-a-quick-roll-in-the-hay look- as my friend calls it, the 'buxom wench look'! Very sexy and bohemian! As my hair has a natural wave to it, this product seemed to bring that out and enhance it. However, I can't help wondering how effective it would be on people with poker straight hair- I'd imagine they'd be better off just grabbing a curling tong! In terms of hold and staying power, the jelly is surprisingly good, holding the curls throughout the day- just don't expect them to be fresh and bouncing the next day! My only real complaint with this product is that I didn't find that my Curls were quite as smooth as Mr Giannini had professed they would be (I still found a dab of Frizz Ease serum worked wonders) but in all other areas this performed fantastically!
Personally I find the packaging the most annoying part of this product- it has a screw top lid which is very impractical- messing around with a screw top lid when you've got gel all over your hands can get pretty farcical! Come on Mr Giannini, is a flip top lid really that much to ask?
This product costs £3.99 from Boots for a huge 200ml tube or, if you want to test it out first, it also comes in mini tester tubes for roughly £1.50.
For me this product is a lifesaver! It chops about an hour a day off my styling time and means I have far more time to actually be out enjoying myself rather than getting ready- I'm now a low maintenance girly! Well... almost...
For many years I had been attempting to straighten my wavy sticky out hair with various products with varying degrees of success - often this just ended up with me wearing my hair back ALL THE TIME which was so boring and non-descript. Eventually I went to a great hairdresser who cut my hair in such a way that when you curled it it looked fantastic, so I could finally wear it down. The only problem now was to find a product that could do this job and hold throughout the day........ I have been through so many mouses, gels, balms and creams you would not believe. There is an abundance of half used products sitting on a shelf in my house. One day though while browsing through Boots, I came across Umberto Giannini's Gypsy Curl Scruncher. I decided to give it a go thoroughly expecting it to be as mediocre as some of the other products I had tried, but no - it was truly the best product I have ever tried for scrunching hair. When your hair is still wet you smooth the gel through from root to tip. I have quite find shoulder length hair and I would only use a relatively small amount as a little goes a long way but I imagine for thicker hair you would need to use more. (Too much and your hair can then feel hard which we definitely don't want!) Then you simply blow dry your hair with a diffuser while still scrunching. If you don't scrunch tightly then the look becomes more 'ropey' which can be nice for a change. The hold is tremendous and it really defines your locks as well as making it look more shiny - always a bonus!! If you leave your hair to dry naturally it also seems to work just as well, but a diffuser is so quick. The only disadvantage I have found with it is that when I took it with me to Cyprus earlier this year and used it while drying my hair naturally in really very hot conditions my hair did feel like straw, but seeing as that is by far not the climate I'm used to in Ireland it doesn't re
ally matter that much to me. I bought this product I think for approximately £5 in Boots, but I can't remember exactly as it was over 2 months ago and even though I use it at least 5 times a week I'm not even half way down the bottle (well squeezy tube to be exact!) The packaging is attractive and looks well sitting just ahead of all the other abandoned products. I would thoroughly recommend this to anyone who needs just a little bit of help to achieve that curly look.
