As it is summer I decided a longer lasting option than shaving would be easier , and after watching the buffed bodies from the adverts opted for Veet wax strips. Being pedantic I read the instructions to be sure it was the same old procedure , and was very impressed with the new easier to grip shape . However after the big rip off reveal there were hardly any hairs on the strip , which is surprising as I have very fine blonde hairs. I checked my leg and the length of the waxed strip was hairy still with a slight waxy residue. I tried again blaming my technique for the products uselessness however it failed to impress again.
Later in the evening I discovered a patch of sore red bumps suspiciously in a rectangle formation! Definitely a result of the wax strip. However on a positive note the smell was pleasant and the wipes were effective for removing waxy residue. But sorry Veet you did not save me any blushes ! Intact the tell tale red rash was a bit of a blush moment! Thank goodness for razors , a girls best friend !
Getting ready for my holiday on Sunday and trying to save some pennies I decided I would self-wax my underarms. No big deal really as I have done them before. How WRONG could i have been???
Veet a well known name in the Hair removal industry, they offer a wide range of removal products. Cold wax, warm wax, creams etc etc. Having epilated my legs, I decided to go for these strips and bought them for a very reasonable £2.99 for 16 strips and 4 after wipes.
The instructions come with the usual does and don't. Don't have a bath immediately before waxing, make sure your skin is dry,Do a skin irritation test before using them. Having used the leg strips before i felt i didn't need to do a test and wanted to just get on with it.
When you open the box you get 8 strips which you basically rub in between your palms for about 20 seconds to warm the wax up and then you pull the strips apart giving you 2 strips. These strips are thinner and shorter than the the leg strips, so they are more convenient for smaller areas. As I was doing my underarms(no stubble when wearing a bikini), I washed and dried my skin and started the warming of the wax. Lifting my arm up to place the strip was fine, I then applied the strip to my underarm and smoothed in the supposed direction of hair growth(as per the instructions).
Bracing myself i then attempted to pull off the strip with one hand, while keeping the skin taut(doing a ballerina impression) and holding my breath. It felt like every hair had been pulled out but I was very dissapointed to see only a small number of hairs on the strip. Deciding i must have done it wrong, once again I applied the strip smoothed it down and pulled in the opposite direction to hair growth. Ouch is the only word i can use. Once again hardly any hairs and a great deal of pain.
Perplexed I re-read the instructions, Dry skin(yes), Skin taut(yes),Applied in direction of hair growth(yes) pulled off in opposite direction of hair growth(yes).
I decided to persevere and managed ,eventually, to get most of the hair. By this time my skin was very red and very sore. After using the wipe, which is lovely, and makes your skin feel very soft and cool, i just couldn't bear the thought of attempting my other under-arm.
After a couple of hours, my underarm was starting to calm down a little but felt bruised and battered. I went on to discover later that night that although your hair looks like it is going in one direction under your arms it is infact going 3 or 4 ways and you have to wax in all directions to become stubble free. It certainly doesn't tell you that in the instructions. Needless to say i didn't do the other arm.
I did find that the hair that i managed to wax lasted for the 2 weeks i was on holiday and the skin did settle down after about 24 hours.
I have come to the conclusion that while cold wax strips are fine for your legs, for more delicate and tender areas (arms, bikini) i wouldn't recommend a cold wax strip at all.
