Advantages: FREE! End up with a trendy style that others will follow!
Disadvantages: Can take ages.
I first noticed the School when reading the Metro one day after work, they do promotional offers all the time (although I haven't seen many around recently) for £4.50 haircuts or even, if your lucky, free ones!
I grabbed as many Metros as I could find and pinched all the coupons. I tried calling, then realized I was on the Tube. I called when I got home and booked an appointment for a restyle. I was advised to book with the Advanced Academy but didn't like the idea of not having much of a say in what happens with my hair. "Don't worry," the lady said, "if you change your mind when you get here we can assign you a stylist in the Academy. Its no problem!"
_________ The Opinion
I asked a few friends if they'd heard about the School and its surprising how many had been there! Some about 30 years ago! So with a good reputation like that I had to give it a go!
_________ The School
The address is...
56 Davies Mews
London
W1Y 1A7
I turned up at the School (it looks dingy on the outside, but is so trendy inside! Don't judge a book and all that!), and after a brief chat with the receptionist i decided to wander over to the Advanced Academy. Best decision in my life! The Advanced Acedamey is located on Grosvenor St, they'll direct you to the place.
The Academy looks so fantastic, its stylish and very high class! I booked in with the receptionist and waited in the waiting area. The reception is very trendy and it's not uncommon to see some strange haircuts on the receptionists. Don't let this worry you though! The waiting area is quite posh; this is where they get other professionals on courses to wait so it's very nice. There's a coffee machine that you can use and biscuits for dunkin' (fruit if you're healthier!). Through the doors I could see a class in progress, there was a model on a stage parading around her new hair and it dint look half bad!.
_________ Inside
While waiting I met some really lovely students waiting for their 'models'. One of them had been a hairdresser in Rome for about 5 years, he wanted to go to the next step and become a professional stylist! So much for a 'school'! I Don't mind leaving my hair in the hands of one of those stylists!
Now, I'd heard some really scary stories about what they do to your hair, someone said her friend had her head shaved; another one of my friends had her hair dyed pink! (I actually liked it!) However the Roman guy quickly dispelled these stories and told me that nothing too extreme would happen and as long as I was clear to the hairdresser everything would be fine.
My coat was taken; I was then led with about 20 others down to the basement and to the 2 rooms. The stairs are quite steep, I'm not sure if they have a lift for those with mobility difficulties. It looks a little bit more dingy downstairs, but the actual styling rooms were nice. They're all white and with lots of mirrors the rooms look huge. There's a massive mirror in the middle in the room, it's about 7 feet high and a good 10 inches thick! We were separated and given seats. It all looked professional; I could even watch Neighbors on the TV!
But I couldn't help but feel nervous, the stories kept on coming about the terrible styles and I even considered walking out. I'm so glad I stayed!
_________ The Cut
I was assigned a Japanese girl to cut my hair, she didn't speak a word of English, but she had a translator. I waited my turn for the teacher to come over and I explained the result I'd eventually want. She loved the texture of my hair (its really thick and wavy) and decided on a blunt fringe with very fine layers and if there was time, a bit of colour.
I was showed to the basins and had a brilliant head massage and wash, I could have stayed there all day!
The cut took all in all about 3 hours as the teacher had to constantly monitor every step of the way, It was reassuring at least as nothing could possibly go wrong!
It was a brilliant cut, excellent products were used and although it was very different to what I'd imagined, it was fantastic!! One of the best haircuts, and it was free. The teacher was so impressed, she invited me back to be a classroom model! Result!
_________ Conclusion
Brilliant. Definitely go for it if you are looking for an up and coming hair cut (most haircuts are designed with next seasons trends in mind.)
Wear something that reflects your personality. If your a girlie girl and are looking for a classic cut, wear something that will help the stylist. If you like vintage, trendy, funky, punky, unusual, fashionista, anything at all, make sure you reflect it with what you wear
Be honest. Don't say you like something if you really don't, otherwise you'll end up with a cut you wont like.
And finally.... trust them! The teachers have been stylists for years and years and they know what will suit you!
********UPDATE********
It's been a while now but I loved my haircut and I was surprised when a few of my friends turned up a week later with the same cut! I was equally more surprised to see the style in catwalks and hair mags!
I was invited back to be a paid model 2 weeks ago too! I had my hair cut in front of about 30 people from all over the world, and I'm sure I saw Trevor Sorbie there. I left my number with the stylist, who asked if he could use me for the next campaign which I speedily agreed to!
Summary: Great hairdressers, free haircuts, chances of being a model and earning cash!
