Advantages: very cheap, friendly
Disadvantages: none
When I enrolled to do a hairdressing course, I was terrified as I had to cut, perm, and colour peoples hair. I knew this was involved at the time I enrolled but I didn?t realise that theses people were actually paying customers. I wasn?t even on the course a week when I was let loose on my very first client. I was physically shaking when I was putting in the first few rollers, I just could not stop I was that nervous. My first clients name was Mrs Bell, she had been coming to get her hair done for the previous four years, she had seen hundreds of students come and go over the years. Once I got talking to Mrs Bell I was totally at ease, she just talked at let me get on with it at my own pace. The finished result was better then I could have hoped for, and Mrs Bell was happy was happy with what I had done as well. I could not have wished for a nicer person to help me get through that first stumbling block. After that there was no stopping me, I could not get enough of doing other peoples hair. I had three years training, and I was just about to finish the course to become fully qualified when disaster struck. I went in to work and had a colour booked for later that after noon, it was a lady I had been doing for the past four years, I had done her hair hundreds of times before. So like every other time before, I mixed and applied the colour, the same as I always did. And I left it to develop for 20 minutes, before I rinsed it off. To my horror her hair had turned green, I didn?t know what to do. I called over my tutor and explained what had happened. We both went through what I had done step by step, but I hadn?t made a mistake. As I said before I had done this lady?s hair hundreds of times before. I just could not understand what had gone wrong, I was in tears, but the lady was very understanding and tried to reassure me that
it was not my fault. As I had done the same as I had before. To my relief, it turned out that the lady was taking antibiotics, which had affected the colour, making it go green. The instructions or her doctor had not stated that she should not colour her hair, or not that she was aware of anyway. I don?t quite understand how the antibiotics had made a difference, but we were both assured that it was down to the tablets. The lady finally got the colour she had originally wanted, well after a few hours anyway. I was just glad that I wasn?t my mistake. You may be sitting there thinking, that you would never let a student near your hair. But I feel that a student puts in 100 percent effort, and you must never forget that there are professionals around to make sure that the student are doing it correctly. They would never let a student do your hair unless they were more that capable of doing it right. So if there is a training college near you, why not give it a try, as it is a quarter of the price you would pay at a hairdresser. As I said before you may feel that you get more out of a training establishment, because the students are totally committed to you and your hair. I have had a bad experience but don?t let it put you off, because there is a one in a million chance of it happening to you.
