Advantages: Space saving on your shelf or in your bag.

Disadvantages: It's not one size fits all.....

Back in the heady days of the 80s and 90s, we went through something of a transformation......suddenly fitness was fabulous - after Fame, Flashdance, and Perfect, we all wanted to dance and exercise our way to gorgousness......village halls started to host "Keep Fit" classes on a Saturday morning, Breakfast TV brought us The Green Goddess, followed after a few years by Mr Motivator.....the fashion world brought us sweat bands and leg warmers, and Argos brought us exercise cycles that would stand in the lounge and double up as a clothes horse for drying sheets, or hanging shirts.......

We progressed to gyms - exercise classes became more popular, and people would visit the gym two or three times a week.......for at least two or three weeks.....

Hair was big.....backcombed, wet looked, spray in colour......oh we were so so "with it"...!

As we wore our shoulder pads to their full potential, the cosmetic and toiletries manufacturers had to come up with some cracking products for us wannabe yuppies, to fit in with our new found lifestyles as we headed towards a new century......

And the product they came up with was.......drum roll.....fanfare trumpeters at the ready........."WASH & GO".

Up until this point, shampoo and possibly conditioner, were the norm - separate bottles. Yup, shock horror, we had to have two bottles in the shower......two bottles on the side of the bath......two bottles in our gym bag as we went to do super-funk-dancercise on a Tuesday and a Thursday.

But now, instead of taking two bottles with us to the gym, and having to spend ALL THAT TIME shampooing, then conditioning our hair, we could take just one!

Yes! Just one bottle - shampoo and conditioner combined. Mixed in together......who would have believed it!? Instead of "wet hair, shampoo, rinse, condition, rinse again".......you could just "Wash & Go".

The advertising campaign made this a must have for all gym goers - why take two bottles into the shower, when you can just "wash & go"?

And we all bought into it.......

.......until our hairdressers told us that it wasn't good for our hair......stories about how it wasn't cleaning the hair properly, or was coating the hair unnecessarily. If you coloured your hair, you shouldn't use this or the colour wouldn't ever stick.......when I was at college, everyone used to talk about the latest they had heard from their hairdressers (or more likely, the student hairdressers at the college).

The advertising stopped - I can't remember the last time I saw an advert for Wash & Go......and I really thought this had left us forever, along with deely boppers, ra ra skirts, and leotards.....

But like all things retro, it has made a comeback - with different varieties - sport.......anti-dandruff......and of course the original version.

So, remembering the gym adverts of years gone by, I put a bottle in my shopping basket in order that I could whizz through the shower after I had been for a run. My two "normal" bottles of shampoo and conditioner temporarily pushed to a corner of the bath, hidden behind the jumbo bottle of bubble bath.....

......I say temporarily, because I very quickly stopped using this. It was a good consistency, and it lathered up well, but I just didn't get that same shiny glossy clean hair feeling that I get with shampoo and conditioner on their own. My hair felt "heavy" and as though I had left the conditioner on without rinsing it properly. When I dried my hair, it still felt a bit greasy.

I think one of the reasons for my dislike this time round was that, unlike the 80s, we now have a far greater choice of hair care products. Something for every budget, style, colour, lifestyle.......Wash & Go is a poor relation now, when there are so many good bottles out there.....all of which could happily sit in your gym bag or on the side of the bath.

But it is not all bad news for Wash & Go - my 13 year old son loves it - it really does agree with his hair. It leaves it clean, and fresh-smelling, and without that grungy "boy smell" that 13 year old hair has the habit of owning.....and for that I thank Wash & Go! After all, anything that gets a teenage boy in the shower and keeping clean, has got to be worth its weight in gold!

**I was asked if this has anything "nasty" in it**
Well, like most shampoos, it is full of ingredients that I don't pretend to understand. I'm not a chemist. But it uses the "ammonium" word twice.....take from that whatever you want, but it could be one of those words that with "laureth" or "lauryl" (?????) after it, could actually be really nice! Sorry, not much help there!

So, I still buy this every few weeks - but it is for my son. I will be happy taking two bottles with me from now on.

Summary: Is having two bottles such a bad thing?
