Advantages: Great for thick hair, textured matt finish, long lasting hold

Disadvantages: needs to be washed out daily, not good in the rain.

When it comes to hair products I am very selective, over the last 5 years I must have tried a different type of hair gel/wax/cream/spray every month! Finally I seem to have landed on a product that suits both my hair and my lifestyle... Wella Shockwaves Ultimate Effects Go Matt Clay.

...Strong Hold...

Firstly, my hair in unbelievably thick! This means that to achieve the slightest bit of style any product I use must have very strong hold. I have used a variety of so called 'extreme' and 'gravity defying' products, which always seemed to work initially, then slowly fade leaving a flaccid style. With the go matt clay my style holds strong all day, even when it's windy!

The only time it doesn't keep its hold is if you get rained on, the clay washes out quite easily so beware.

...Matt Finish...

One of the best advantages of this product is the matt finish. Unlike most gels/creams or gum, the clay moulds and shapes your hair without leaving a 'wet' look, you simply get a textured effect that looks crisp and clean.

...Scent...

The scent is refreshing and not overpowering in any way. I can't say it's as nice as some gels I have used, but it is certainly pleasant.

...Feel...

As with all hair products it depends on how much you apply, I generally apply quite a decent amount but that is die to my unruly hair!

The clay does set quite firm, but not hard like gel. It is definatly not for those who wish to be able to run their fingers through their hair. When applied I find that you simply forget it is in, it feels light and does not irritate the scalp, as I have found with some products.

...Length of hold...

Whilst using this product my hair has ranged form about 1-2.5". I would say that this clay is optimum in that range, but could give texture to longer hair if required, for shorter hair I would recommend more of a wax.

...Application...

I know the bottles always tell you how but here are a couple of tips from me:
-Make sure your hair is clean and dry
-I apply in two stages, first the back then (surprisingly) the front. Each time taking a small amount of clay, warming it in my hands, then working through my hair, scrunching and rubbing to give a messy style.
-Try to get your style right quickly as the clay does stiffen rather fast, this also means if you don't get it right first time its hard to get back to style you want.
-Try to keep the lid on the jar... this keeps the remaining clay fresh and makes it more manageable.
-Finally wash your hands... the clay does leave a residue on your hands that would be sticky if not cleaned off.

...Washing Out...

Once it's in you inevitably need to get it out. I do not really recommend leaving this product in overnight unless you want a shock the next day when you look in the mirror and appear to have been electrocuted in the night. Plus, it's very difficult to re-apply over yesterday's style without making a hash of things. I have found that washing out is a doddle, once the water hits your head just shampoo as normal and the clay will be gone.

...Buying it...

It comes in 75ml jars and is sold in all the major supermarkets, as well as the usual boots Superdrug etc...

Average selling price is £3-4, but if you hunt round you can sometimes find offers such as BYGOF and 3 for 2. I've recently found such offers in Tesco and Superdrug and stocked up!

...Summary...

A strong holding clay that gives a nice textured matt finish, great for rebellious thick hair that will not be tamed.

Summary: A strong holding clay that gives a nice textured matt finish,

I used to like their Styling Steel Hair Gel but it used to dry your hair out terribly.
