Advantages: Brushes Out Easily, No Stickiness & Does What It Claims
Disadvantages: Slight Hardening of Hair.
I always used to hate hairspray as a child, whenever my mum took me to get my hair cut the hairdresser always used to cover my hair in a hairspray that made my hair feel all hard. As such I developed quite an aversion to the stuff and refused to ever use it. This was until I went out last summer having put my fringe up in a quiff which promptly fell out of within an hour. My friend suggested I try using hairspray and recommended one to me... since then I've never looked back!
Wella is classed as a professional hair brand and a leader in hair care in over 150 countries. It was founded back in 1880 so has been around for quite some time. The professional division offers salon equipment and furniture as well as a range of training courses for hairdressers. Their consumer brands are produced by Proctor and Gamble and sold in a variety of stores within the UK including high street stores and supermarkets such as Morrisons and Sainsburys.
The Product
The hairspray itself comes in a dark green, slightly metallic looking can with Silvikrin wrote on in white and some fushia pink detailing it's Maximum Hold. It stands upright on any surface and has a "pull off" lid which makes it extremely easy to use. The hairspray itself is dispensed by pressing down on a green dispenser, the same that seem to be found on any bottle of hairspray.
The spray itself comes out clear and has that typical hair salon type smell to it, quite strong and I don't recommend you get it in your mouth at all as it tastes horrible - my boyfriend has found himself standing nearby when I've been spraying before! It's recommended that you hold the can 20-30cm away from your hair and spray evenly while protecting your eyes with your other hand.
The spray promises:
* No stickiness
* To not dry out your hair
* To provide UV protection
* Brushes out easily
I can safely say that it delivers on:
* No stickiness - my hair wasn't left feeling sticky in the slightest, it did feel like it had a slight layer of film over it but this tends to be normal with any hairspray.
* To not dry out your hair - my hair was left feeling a little hard as previously mentioned but after brushing it thoroughly it felt exactly as it had done that morning.
* To provide UV protection - I'm not sure I can really comment on this one, as I dye my hair the sun automatically does affect it and I don't use the spray enough to notice any prevention.
* Brushes out easily - it really does, I thought whenever I used hairspray I'd have to wash my hair that same night but that's not the case with this one at all.
My mum used to have the Firm Hold version of this which is classed as a Number 3, Maximum Hold is classed as a number 4 and that's the highest number the range goes up to. In terms of a comparison I'd always opt for Maximum Hold - my mum's hair is much shorter and she uses a tiny bit everyday to just stop her hair from blowing around, but she's even changed to Maximum Hold now I've bought it! The Firm Hold did leave my mum's hair feeling a little greasy as well.
This hairspray comes in a 250ml and a 400ml version and seems to vary in price. Doing a little research today here's what I found to be the current prices at Wilkinsons - 250ml is priced at £1.95 pr 400ml is priced at £2.00 (previously £2.74). I bought my current 400ml can from Morrisons a couple of months ago and think I paid £4.00 for two cans which is pretty good value in my opinion as each can tends to last me about three or four months depending how often I use it.
As with other similar products it's kept in a pressurised container to it should not be exposed to very hot temperatures, nor should it be sprayed anywhere near a naked flame. Obviously keep it out of the reach of any children as it could be very dangerous if it fell into young hands. Lastly avoid direct inhalation and the eye area as well.
Conclusion
I've been using SIlvikrin ever since last summer and am on my third 400ml bottle now. I can't see myself ever changing to another brand as unlike some hairsprays it actually does what it says on the can and keeps my hair in perfect place without making it feel all hard or rigid. The best thing is it brushes out really easily and doesn't leave my hair looking greasy, hard, sticky, wet, etc. like some hairsprays can. I often quiff up my fringe in the summer months and can safely say that it keeps my quiff in place from morning until night and there's no need for any reapplication during the day. I'd certainly buy this product again, does the job and it's great value!
Thanks for reading.
