Wella Silvikrin Maximum Hold Hairspray
Advantages: Holds my hair in place well
Disadvantages: Have to use quite a lot of spray each time
During recent years I have been keen to opt for premium hair care brands and I could end up spending £20 on a small bottle of hair spray. Obviously this isn't ideal and so recently I decided to purchase Wella Silvikrin hair spray for a change. I can remember my mum using this when I was younger so I picked it up without much thought.
** THE BRAND **
Wella have been around for quite some time now, having been set up in 1880 when a 25 year old hairdresser called Franz Stroher decided to set up his own business. They began making wigs, then later moved to perming and began styling hair in the 1940's.
Now they are a widely recognised, international cosmetic brand offering products for hair care and styling. They have been recognised for designing products for specific hair types such as scalp protection, adding shine and lots more.
** THE PRODUCT **
This product is the maximum hold hairspray. It comes in a dark green can with slightly lighter shades of green around the product and brand name, both of which are displayed in the middle. 'Wella' is written in gold, while 'silvikrin' is written in white. The can comes with a green lid, which when removed reveals a green dispenser nozzle. Underneath, there is a pink strip which goes round the entire can. Similarly, approximately 3/4 of the way down the can there is another pink strip with has 'hairspray' printed on it. Below this, is the product variant which in this case is maximum hold so the number '4' is hightlighted on the can.
On the can of the bottle is some product information and directions for use. Also, there are safety instructions as it is a flammable product. A full list of ingredients can too be found here and contact information for Wella.
** USING IT **
The first time I came to use this hairspray was after I had washed and dried my hair. After straightening it and backcombing it a little, I put it to the test to see how well it would hold.
I held the can at a distance of around 30cm and pushed down the nozzle. It seemed to dispense evenly and didn't come out lumpy or spray in different directions which is a problem I have experienced frequently. There was a slight scent of chemicals but nothing overpowering, although it is the sort of smell that chokes you a little if you inhale too much of it!
I didn't need to spray too much product to feel like it had taken effect. I touched my hair almost immediately affterwards to check it had worked and it felt slightly stiff but as if the product had settled.
** RESULTS **
I was pleased with the ease of using this product as it came out and settled quickly onto my hair. As I mentioned above, my hair felt a little stiff but I quite like a hairspray to take this effect as this way, I know it has worked. However it did not feel hard, it maintained some movement and it didn't look as if it was wet (when you apply too much).
Throughout the day, my hair stayed in place on the whole. By the time I got home though, my hair had gone a little flat and droopy however this is more a result of having freshly washed hair than the hairspray itself.
If it is still in place though, it does brush out very easily without leaving any residue or making my hair look greasy in any way.
** PRICING AND AVAILABILITY **
This product, like most Wella products, can be easily located on the high street in drug stores and supermarkets alike. For a 400ml can, you can expect it to cost you around £2.89 (if you have a Boots advantage card you can gain 6 points from this purchase).
As always, high street brands such as this can be located on discounted websites such as Amazon so you're likely to be able to find it at a discounted rate if you shop around.
** SUMMARY **
In conclusion, I am really pleased with this product. It holds my hair in place without leaving residue or stickiness and it is still strong enough to hold a style in place without sacrificing movement or manageability.
Unfortunately, it doesn't last as long throughout the day as I would perhaps have liked and I found the can ran out relatively quickly in around 3 weeks, although I was using it daily. However given the price I do feel that it is a bit of a bargain and so if I have to purchase it more regularly than I would a premium brand it doesn't really matter as I am saving money either way!
I will give this hairspray 4/5 Dooyoo stars, only because it is such a good price, as I would have preferred it to last longer.
