“ Brand: Wilko / Type: Hair Shampoo „
Recently me and my other half went to stay with his mum for the weekend. We do this quite often so when we go she tells us to make ourselves at home and use whatever products we want. To save carrying shampoos and conditioners we take her up on her word and use hers. While we were there I jumped in the bath and grabbed the shampoo to wash my hair, this time she had Wilko shampoo fruity tropical shimmer.
It was in a clear plastic bottle with a black lid on the top. The bottle had a slight curve on one side. It had a label on the front which told you what the product was and what it did. It also had the company logo and a picture of some mixed fruits which the product was supposed to smell like.
The product itself was a clear blue colour. It was slightly runny but not a bad consistency. It did smell fruity, I couldn't pick out any fruits in particular, but it did smell quite nice.
When using the product I noticed that I had to use more shampoo than I usually would to get it to lather up nicely. I used the matching conditioner with the shampoo and both washed out easily. When i was out of the bath i went to brush my hair, which usually isn't a problem and the brush just sails through, and that's when the nightmare started. The more I tried to brush it the worse it seemed to get. I had to get my partner to help me get the brush through it and after around 20 minutes the two of us had managed to get it knot free. I then dried it off and straightened it like I usually do and it felt and looked like there was a lot of residue in my hair. It looked and felt awful. I thought I hadn't rinsed it out properly and used it again, making sure it was rinsed properly and it was still the same.
Overall I did not like this product at all. I would not use it again and I would not recommend it to anyone.
For Christmas all my mum really wanted was practical things as she does every year. She's never been one for ornaments and isn't a hobby person and she really doesn't like clutter hanging about the place (unlike me!) and requested just one shampoo and conditioner saying they'd come in handy. I forgot all about it till last minute shopping and popped into my local Wilkinsons (well it was then, I've moved since!) and I spotted this range of toiletries from Wilkinsons. You can usually find an array of products within this range at either a pound each (usual price) or more often than not you can grab 2 of them for £1.50 and that includes bath foams, hair conditioners, shower gels and the likes as well as a few different shampoos and so on. It was actually nothing to do with me paying only £1.50 for the shampoo and the matching conditioner though on this occasion but the fact that the labeling told me it would add shimmer to the hair and it looked nice packaging really and a bit different from the usual looking shampoo bottles I have seen of late.
The packaging of this is quite simple. It comes in a see through plastic and slightly curvy bottle with a flip top black coloured lid to the top of it concealing a small hole and then on the blue label on the front of it we are shown pictures of tropical fruits (pineapple and melon and so on) and told what it is an who it is by 'Designed to give your a hair a radiant shine' and then on the back label other information given includes being told a bit a bit the product and how to use it, the ingredients and warnings are given, we are told from when opening it up to use it up within 24 months, the size is stated which is 400ml (so a big size this is) and contacts details for Wilkinsons are given. Nice packaging this is, I like the curve to the bottle for ease of handling and being able to see how much shampoo is within the bottle and so on.
So like I said at the beginning of this review I bought this for my mum as a small stocking filler really. Since buying her it though I have moved back home awaiting to move into a new flat so this is in the bathroom. I forgot my shampoo when I arrived here and Mum told me to use hers as she doesn't think much of it anyway so I have used this regularly now for a quite a while!
The liquid is gel like and transparent with a turquoise colour to it. Fragrance wise it really is naturally sweet and fruity. The only real fragrance I get from this is pineapple really to be honest but it is a fresh and clean fragrance and in my opinion suitable for either of the sexes to use. I find this to be quite a runny shampoo however on my damp/wet hair a little of it really does lather up quickly really releasing the lovely fragrance it has. Its also easy to rinse out of my long hair and you can use it the once and follow with conditioner or use it as I do and wash your hair with it twice and follow with a conditioner or of course your usual method.
This leaves my hair cleansed and smelling sweet and fruity for quite a few hours. It doesn't add body to my hair and neither does it eradicate frizzies however it doesn't promise to, to be fair o it. It does say on the back of the bottle that it will leave my hair soft, shiny and manageable which I guess it does reasonably well however the 'shimmer' aspect doesn't happen for me or my mum.
It does leave my hair feeling smooth and doesn't interfere with its natural sheen, it cleans my hair, its economical and does the job so I can't complain. It isn't one I would personally go out of my way to buy but it isn't one I'd avoid like the plague either so I'm on the fence with this one!
Only available from Wilkinsons.

I will try almost any shampoo and in the past have found some cheaper options to work out well. I have very long thick coloured hair so normally will go for any to help with drying out.
Wilkinson's Fruity Tropical Shampoo:
'Fruity tropical shampoo, designed to give your hair a radiant shine'
- www. wilkinsonplus.com
It was my mom that purchased this for me, she knows I like anything with a fruity scent so she got me this to try. My first opinion was it looks a little on the cheap side and that it would properly be no good. However looks can be deceiving and it turned out to be an ok shampoo after all.
Using the shampoo I have found I need to use a little more than normal, otherwise I hardly get any lather. As the shampoo was being rubbed around in my wet hair the scent was certainly fruity but I wouldn't say tropical at all.
The shampoo is a pale blue in colour and for a shampoo thin in consistency, pretty much bordering on being on the watery side. Despite this being cheaper than leading brands you do have use more of it so questioning really just how good value is it?
A whole two weeks this shampoo lasted me and others I use are easily around the three almost pushing on four weeks. So in my personally opinion not at all that good value for money. My hair did feel clean, but still no shimmery shine like what was stated.
I must say though the scent lasted well on my hair, even being able to smell it the next day. This is one thing that I did like about this shampoo. But sadly on the hold nothing special and I don't think I would purchase another.
This shampoo comes in a plastic bottle with a flip lid, you just open the lid and squeeze out the contents. I never had any problems opening the bottle whilst in the shower with wet hands. Once empty can be recycled.
Price and Availability:
At the moment this shampoo is currently on offer for two for £2.00 or £1.48 on its own. This is for the 400ml bottle; I haven't noticed any smaller bottles. You can also get the matching conditioner and hair mist.
For me this is a pretty average shampoo it does an ok job but for my hair I need more. The scent is rather nice but that is really about it. People whom have shorter and thinner hair this might just work, however for people with long thick hair, no chance.
Three out of five stars from me.
Thank you for reading.
I mentioned in my Avon Morrocan oil shampoo review that I find it too rich for my hair so only use it once a week. The rest of the time I am using this shampoo from the Wilko Fruity range. I spotted this range of shampoo and conditioners when shopping in Wilkinson's and was attracted by the bright colours of the bottles. As a bonus they were only £1.48 each and on a special offer of 2 for £2, so I decided I didn't have too much to lose by trying them out and purchased a bottle of both the shampoo and conditioner in the Tropical fragrance.
The shampoo comes in a clear bottle through which you can see the blue shampoo and has an easy to open flip top lid. The label depicts several fruits - a melon, strawberry, nectarine and pineapple - which are the ingredients in this shampoo. The bottles have a slightly curvy design and are very similar to the Herbal Essences bottles. I think really that these products are supposed to be a cheaper version of those.
It doesn't specify on the bottle which hair type this is for, but does say that the shampoo will leave hair 'soft, shiny and manageable with the heady aroma of exotic fruits'.
When it came to using the shampoo the first thing I noticed was that it was very runny. I have long, thick hair so use a reasonably large dollop of shampoo per use and I found it to be so runny it was running through my fingers. This was easily solved by applying it in two lots - massaging a small amount into my scalp first, followed by a second splodge for the ends of my hair, but it was a minor inconvenience I could have done without.
The scent of the shampoo was a little not really what I had hoped it would be and I felt it was a little disappointing. Being called 'Tropical' I perhaps expected something strong and fruity that would remind me of summer holidays and sunshine. I found the scent of the shampoo was indeed fruity with the scent of melon and pineapple being the most prominent, but it wasn't as strong as I was expecting or indeed hoping for. I could smell it when I was using it, but it wasn't as strong as some other brands I've used, such as Herbal Essences or even Alberto Balsam.
The shampoo lathers well and rinses out just as easily. I tend to use a lot of products in my hair and this shampoo rinses them all out in one go, whereas sometimes I need to wash twice with other brands to get my hair feeling clean. I always follow up with the matching conditioner.
My main concern when I began using this shampoo was that it may be drying. In fact, I find that it isn't drying at all and leaves my hair feeling very soft and clean. I think my hair looks nice and healthy and it may be my imagination but I think it has a little bit more volume and bounce after using this.
It states on the bottle that this is a shimmer shampoo, but I'm not really sure what that means. There's no shimmer in the actual liquid that I can see and I think it would be a bit of an exaggeration to say my hair shimmers after using this, however it does have a healthy sheen to it. Unfortunately with the scent of the product being so muted I don't notice any lingering fragrance in my hair.
For the price of just £1 for 400ml I have been very pleased with this shampoo and feel that it is decent value for money. I will admit to being a little disappointed with the fragrance and it being a little on the runny side, but everything else was very positive and I will happily buy this again.
