Boots Essentials 1600W Compact Hairdryer
Advantages: Cheap to buy
Disadvantages: Poorly made and hard to direct/ control
~A dryer that can't even blow hot and cold!~
Having had a mid priced Boots hair dryer in use in the past for at least 5 years with no issues of any note (until sparks flew and the rear part of the dryer began sending out some nasty black smoke, making my Boots dryer totally useless), I felt that it was worth checking out what was on offer at Boots to replace it with. After a good number of years of use I felt my Boots dryer had given me value for money so I was more than happy to go off and see what more recent hair dryer models had to offer. When I came across the ultra compact box that contained the Boots Essentials 1600W Compact Hair dryer I had a quick look at the contents in store and then opted to buy it there and then, as it was priced at a very low £7.99 making it worth a try.
~Product feel, finish and functions~
As mentioned the product box was compact and held a very light and compact plasticy feeling hair dryer that had a rather over sized nozzle attachment that could be fitted to the business end of the dryer. I felt that the dryer had a cheap look and plain finish to it that was in line with the cheap price paid and when I compared it with the previous dryer I had, I felt a little hard done by with this model as it didn't look to be as nice. The ultra light feel of the dryer and lack of heat settings was really limiting in my opinion and in use I found that I was unable to control the heat settings for the dryer as well as I had with my previous Boots dryer. There are only 2 settings on this model with no variable heat setting at all. These 2 settings are controlled by a really cheap and light feeling slide switch and I was not really all that happy with this at all.
~Using the dryer~
In use I found that I could not get a steady mid heat from the dryer which could be easily controlled, as I tried and failed to direct the heat towards drying my hair as I wanted to. Once the funnel shaped nozzle attachment was placed on to the front end of the dryer it made the whole thing really awkward to use, as this part of the product seemed really over sized when placed on to the compact dryer. I found the bulky end nozzle directed any heat away from the areas of my hair I wanted to dry and as the handle of the dryer was rather short I felt it made the whole thing really top heavy and hard to direct with any degree of success. The cheap feel of the dryer made it something that seemed like it would not last all that well over time and the 1600 watt motor didn't seem to pack very much of a punch even when on its high power setting.
Over all I was very unhappy with this hairdryer product as not only did it lack weight and finish, it was poorly designed and failed to work as I wanted it to. I disliked the short handle and over large funnel shaped nozzle that kept falling off due to me knocking it with my arm when I was using the dryer and I felt that even at the very cheap price of £7.99 I could have bought a better product. As I was so very unhappy with the lack of control I had over the heat settings, the lack of power the dryer had and the poor way the nozzle attached to the front end of the dryer I took it back to Boots and obtained a full refund for it.
It is a shame that this product did not live up to the expectations I had for it, based on the fact that I had previously owned and used a Boots branded dryer to good effect over a number of years. My rating for this product is just 1 star as I feel it lacks any finesse, has switches that feel cheap and lacks a good variety of heat settings that can be used to good effect. The nozzle on the dryer I had kept coming off and was not in keeping with the size of the body of the dryer at all. This dryer lacks any real power and is not something I would look at buying again in future as there are better dryers you can buy in this budget price range.
Summary: A last resort type of product
