John Frieda 5125U Salon Shine Ionic Hairdryer
Advantages: Smoothes hair, stops frizz, dries quickly, looks good
Disadvantages: Noisy, buttons in slightly awkward position
I received this John Frieda hairdryer for Christmas and have been using it nearly every day since then. This hairdryer was a replacement for my old one, which had been quite a basic model without any ionic non-frizz technology, so this was a real improvement. A lot of people have complimented me on how good my hair is looking since I got this, saying it looks very shiny or asking if I have straightened my hair. My hair is naturally wavy and has a tendency to get frizzy on occasion, especially in hard water areas like where I am now living. This hairdryer, along with use of a good serum on towel dried hair before blow drying, has really improved my hair.
The hairdryer is simple and sleek looking, with quite a slim silver body. It has a lilac raised stripe across it and the name John Frieda is clearly marked on it. It is lightweight and easy to hold in one hand when drying and styling your hair. The only issue I have with holding it is that it is possible to accidentally knock the buttons with your hand, so that you inadvertently turn it up, down or off. Now that I have been using it for months I no longer do this, but in the first couple of weeks I did have to pay attention to stop this happening. Because of the buttons' position, you have to hold the dryer slightly further down the handle than I would have naturally been inclined to do.
The button controls on this hairdryer are quite simple and self explanatory. The top button gives you a choice of three speeds and the bottom button gives you a choice of two heat settings or turning the hair dryer off. There is also a "cold shot" button on the inside middle of the handle, which is easily reachable and can be pressed while drying and styling without any difficulty. This gives a blast of cold air to help hold your hair into a certain style. Personally I don't often use it. I tend to use speed setting 2 and heat setting 1 and generally blast my hair all over, including turning my head down and drying my hair upside down. For me, this is the way I have always used to get my hair dry as quickly as possible. With my old hair dryer, it could sometimes lead to my hair looking a bit frizzy afterwards. The beauty of this hair dryer is that somehow the ionic anti-frizz technology makes my hair really smooth, shiny and straight while drying, even without me particularly styling it as I go. After drying my hair is very easy to comb and brush through and is left looking much better than it ever did with my old hairdryer.
The speed of this hairdryer is impressive. Obviously the length and thickness of your hair will determine how long you need to dry it, but as someone with fairly average shoulder length hair I am definitely happy with the drying time and find I only need a couple of minutes.
With regard to noise, this hair dryer is quite loud! Maybe this is the price to pay for it working so powerfully and quickly. Personally I am not bothered by the noise, but people who need to get up early without waking their partners or children might find it a bit of a problem.
The full price is £59.99, which I do think is quite expensive for a hair dryer, although it's not too bad when you consider how much use you get out of it if you use it nearly every day and I think it is a quality product. I know my mum bought me mine half price when it was on offer in Boots before Christmas and I would definitely be happy to pay £30 for it.
Overall I would fully recommend it to anyone who wants to tame their frizz prone hair. I will take 1 star off because of the slight negatives I have mentioned, but I am very happy with it.
Summary: Improves my hair a lot!
