Silkymit
by brickers87 Being somewhat of a clumsy oaf I was given these by a relative as an alternative to shaving (which, embarrassingly, led to a few too many nicks and cuts - quite frankly Edward Scissorhands would have made a cleaner job of it). At first I found the whole process fairly time consuming and it took a few attempts to get the method right to ... make a truly effective job of the hair removal. In all honesty, the results are not of the same standard as more traditional methods such as shaving or waxing, however, they can be handy for bits you may have missed. Another advantage would be that the product can be used at any time - not only in the bath or shower as with shaving and it makes a minimum amount of mess - compared with the use of foams and the wax and wax strips used with other methods. A tip I would recommend when using these pads would be to firstly go over each leg twice - not immediately, perhaps alternate between the two. Also, using a moisturiser directly after using has impressive effects - in particular a moisturiser for sensitive skin (maybe E45) - this may be sore at first but will yield impressive effects. I've had (and have, honestly, used them on and off) these pads for at least 2 years and haven't needed to replace them...however, after a couple of years of use I've found that the pads have become more flimsy and are prone to rip - not that I have any general complaints about this product! Silkymit
by reddanni I purchased these from John Lewis over a year ago. I can't remember exactly how much I paid I think it was approx £1.99. I have since seen them on Amazon for £1.50 Silkymit's come in small card board packaging like an envelope without the folding lip to stick down. The top is not sealed at all and I gently squash the ... cardboard together in order to put my other hand in to get the mits out. The packaging I think is great, minimal enough to be environmentally friendly and strong enough to protect the mits. The mits themselves are exactly as my title suggests purple sand paper for your legs. You get 3 in a pack. You wear them like a sleeve on your fingers, doesn't matter what side of the purple mitt you use so effectively with 3 mitts you have 6 sides to wear out before throwing them away. They do last quite awhile though. Once I have the mit on I them use on clean, dry legs, rubbing in small circles, 4 times clockwise then 4 times anti clockwise on the same patch of skin. It doesn't take very long to do both my legs. You are warned on the packaging to only rub gently and not in an up and down motion, also do not use more than once a week. As you do this you will notice a fine skin dust coming off your legs so I suggest you do it over a bath or towel. Then when you have finished wipe the mitt and its ready to use again, although as I have already mentioned they do wear out just like normal sand paper. On your legs you are meant to apply a cool damp towel then moisturise. I don't do this every time and haven't noticed any difference whether I follow this method or not on my legs. So it is incredibly easy and quick to use and so cheap can it possible work? Yes! I don't feel any irritation when using the mitts and my legs don't just look and feel hair free but actually are silky and smooth exactly as they say they will. My legs feel so great much better than ANY other hair removing process I've tried (waxing, shaving, moose, cream) must be a down side? You bet there is. After using a few times I notice my re growth was the same as if using a cream, re growth appears after 7 days, although I can just start to feel after 2 days. I did notice a slightly itching almost tickling sensation a few days after using but was so impressed by the mitts I didn't want to stop using. However the last time the itching drove me mad and I accidently starched my calf so bad it bleed. This I decided was the last time I would use them. It is such a shame but I just can't stand the after experience. Overall I so want to continue to use these, they are incredible good value, quick to use and really work leaving me with fantastic results but I just can't give them more than 3 stars as I won't use them. Shame. Read the complete review |

Silkymit
by Radusiq Even though I always get back to simple shaving with proper razor, I have tried many different techniques of hair removal - from hair removal creams, wax stripes, epilator, and last but not least - Silkymits. Silkymits are dark purple "gloves" (well, in fact they are stripes of very fine sandpaper into which you can ... slide your fingers so that it creates impression of glove) that you rub in slow circle motion on your legs to remove hair and gently exfoliate at the same time. Silkymits come in simple cardboard packaging, like a smaller CD - can be purchased for about £1.50 for a pack of three (I used to get them in Savers drug stores). At the front of the packaging there is a name of the product, and a picture of legs being treated with Silkymits, other side has more important information - instructions to use and the fact product can cause irritation of very sensitive skin, shouldn't be used on broked or inflamed skin, and should be tried on a small area before use (quite simmilar to hair colours). So, you made sure your skin is clean and dry and slipped the Silkymit on your hand. Now all you have to do is rub gently in circular motion - packaging says 4-times in one direction and 4-times in the opposite direction, but I'm happy enough with irregular motions, however, you must not rub up and down. A fine dust appears, which is exfoliated skin, but the main thing - you see the hair disappearing. I can easily remove all my hair with Silkymit (a bit harsh around knees and ankles though). I have to say my hair is very, very fine, however my sister is using these as well and she has dark, hard hair and is very happy with the product so I think it's really suitable for most people. As too much exfoliating is not good for your skin, I wouldn't use it all the time, but it's great to use once in a while instead of razor. As to the irritation, you have to be very careful not to rub too much on one place, as it really can be very irritating - sometimes I find my legs a bit red and itchy few hours after use, but Aloe Vera gel or good moisturiser calms the skin. Instructions on the packaging say after you're finished, you should apply a cool damp towel to the legs before using moisturiser - to be honest I have never tried this, but may help as well. You can get smaller, pink Silkymits for other areas (face, underarms, bikinis) - due to the irritation problems I would not recommend using these. Also, even skin is left very smooth and silky after use, almost like after waxing, Silkymits don't provide long lasting results. New hair start to grow immediately just like after shaving (new hair is finer, though). So, all in all, Silkymits are great alternative to shaving even though probably not for everyday use. They are effective, exfoliate the skin gently at the same time and leave your legs wonderfully smooth as if you waxed them. They are also not expensive, definitely worth giving them a try. I must say, however, that Silkymits are not completely unique, similar products can be found as well - apart from the looks the roughness of the sandpaper is different too. May be worth shopping around and trying other brands as everyone needs to find what sandpaper suits them most. Even I'm happy enough with Silkymits, I prefer brand with finer sandpaper that gives same results and less irritation. Read the complete review |
