INTRO Being the Lifestyle guide at Dooyoo obviously has lots of good points, but one I hadn’t been expecting was being the recipient of freebies! However, a week or so ago, I received an email from a company offering to send me a free Epil-Ya pack for me to review, as I was (apparently) a “respected” opinionator. Epil-Ya is made in Switzerland. This is its first foray into the UK market and they were presumably hoping for some good publicity. Never one to turn down a freebie, I emailed them my postal address and quickly took delivery of a package containing a rather impressive lot of contents. I received a 135ml (200g) tub of Epil-Ya wax, a 100ml (100g) tube of Cool-Ya moisturiser and two accessory packs each containing a plastic spatula and ten cotton waxing strips, plus a very good little booklet detailing its uses. This all arrived in a nicely sized see-through plastic travel bag with the Epil-Ya logo on it. IN THE PAST Up until this time, I had never waxed my legs. I have used hair removal creams, but usually resort to shaving. However, I have had some bad experiences and 90% of the time I shave, my legs end up bright red, scratched, sore and bleeding. No matter whether I use a cheap disposable razor or an expensive just for women one, the results are the same. Using Lush’s Ambrosia shaving cream has certainly helped, but I long for the day when my legs can be hair free and pain free at the same time. EPIL-YA TO THE RESCUE? So would Epil-Ya provide the solution? I decided to give it a try, especially as my leg hair was a couple of centimetres long and the sun was out. I sat myself in front of Coronation Street and prepared myself for what would probably be a very painful experiment. My twelve-year-old daughter asked if she could try it out too, so I agreed. She is mixed race and very conscious of her body hair as it is so dark. So we sat down, covered the floor in tea towels
and began our female bonding session. THE TREACLE I opened the round tub of Epil-Ya wax to find something that looked exactly like dark treacle or runny honey. I had been expecting something firmer, so this was a surprise. It even smells like treacle and is extremely sticky. I put the spatula in to the tub and put some of the wax on it. This is potentially very messy, so you do need to be prepared and have towels down to catch any drips. Following the instructions, I applied a thin layer of the wax to my legs. This is supposed to be applied in the direction of the hair growth, so I did this, but it felt like my hairs were being pulled a bit. Ouch factor = 4 out of 10 The booklet doesn’t specify how long you need to leave it on for, so I put a cotton strip over it straight away, rubbed it a few times to stick it, took a deep breath and pulled! Ouch factor = 6 out of 10 My first efforts were a bit half-hearted and I didn’t manage to remove all the hairs, but as my skill improved, I found I became more confident. I discovered that pulling the strip off quickly and quite forcefully worked the best and although it was slightly painful, it certainly wasn’t unbearable. I rinsed the bits of wax off with a damp flannel. Afterwards, my legs were smooth, I didn’t have any soreness or red patches and there was only a faint stinging sensation. I applied the Cool-Ya moisturiser to my legs and this felt wonderful! HOW COOL ARE YA? The Cool-Ya moisturiser is an opaque gel and smells just like Lockets – probably due to the menthol and lemon extract in it. It feels lovely; it is very cooling and soothing and only slightly sticky, but that fades quickly. Having done all this to my poor legs, I examined them and found there were still a few patches of hair left. I believe this was due to my unpractised technique, as the wax completely removed the hair in the
places where I had felt more confident about ripping the cotton strip off. Being a bit wary of repeatedly waxing the same area, I resorted to my old razor and guess what? Yes, I have red scratches down my legs which kept me awake last night and still hurt some nineteen hours later! The areas where I used the Epil-Ya, however, are absolutely fine and do not hurt at all. LIKE MOTHER, LIKE DAUGHTER? So how did my daughter get on with it all? She tried it on her knees, legs, thighs and armpits. She had some success on her legs, but it wasn’t very effective overall. I think this was due to her being much more vigilant about shaving than I am, so her hairs were very tiny and therefore probably harder to remove. She is going to try again when they are a bit longer. She had a bright red patch come up on her thigh after removing the wax, which looked very sore. However, she said it wasn’t really painful and the redness disappeared after a minute or so. INFORMATION AND USES Epil-Ya is 100% natural. It claims to be less painful than some other systems, because it does not use hot wax and the Epil-Ya only removes the hair, not the skin. It is claimed that regrowth will take between three and five weeks. The booklet supplied with the kit contains details of how to use this on all appropriate body areas, but a quick list of the places this can be used on is as follows – eyebrows, between the brows, face, top lip, chin, back, neck, ears, chest, armpits, arms, stomach, bikini line, legs, knuckles, feet and toes. It is suitable for use by both men and women. It is not suitable for use on skin which is irritated, sore, sunburnt or cut. You need to check with your GP before using it if you have varicose veins, diabetes, warts or any skin diseases and cannot be used with other dermatological treatments. The Epil-Ya contains water, sucrose, citric acid and jojoba oil. The Cool-Ya contains
water, Isopropyl alcohol, sodium carbomer, menthol, grapefruit extract and lemon extract. HOW MUCH? A kit like the one I received is available from the website for either £24.99 (RRP £29.99) or £19.99 (RRP £24.99). The only difference between the two is that the first kit contains 135ml (200g) of Epil-Ya wax, while the cheaper kit contains only 100ml (140g). I would find the high price of this somewhat off-putting, as it is a very rare occurrence I have £20-£30 to spend on a beauty product. However, if I did have the money, I would want to buy this, as it is a very good quality product. If you can afford the initial outlay, the kit should last you a while though. The cotton strips can be washed and used again, the plastic spatulas are washable and both the wax and the gel look like they will last a long time. There appears to be about 5/6 of the gel left and about 4/5 of the wax, after my daughter and myself used it last night. If you only need to wax every month or so while using this, a kit could last you six months, depending on how many areas you apply it. You can also buy each item separately – the wax sells for £10.99 for the cheapest tube, the Cool-Ya for £6.99 and the accessory pack (spatula and cotton strips) for £4.49. VERDICT Overall, I was very impressed with this and would certainly be tempted to buy it. I found it easy to use (albeit a bit messy) and much less painful than I was expecting. I think once you are confident pulling the strips off with the right amount of force, it will be a quick, easy and almost painless way of getting rid of unwanted hair.
