Gillette Fusion ProGlide Power
Advantages: Very Smooth Shave, Really is Like Gliding, Mirocomb a Welcome Addition
Disadvantages: Heavy, Bad Gripping, Pricey
Ever since Gillette revolutionised the way razors are made back when they introduced the original Mach3, they've had some hits and misses with razors released after the initial breakthrough. Gillette's Mach3 Nitro Power and Fusion Power were big improvements, while others, such as the Mach3 Turbo, showed no clear improvement. Happily, Gillette hit gold with their newest razor, the Fusion Proglide Power.
Similar to the Fusion models which preceded this, there are 5 blades on every blade to. However, these blades are (noticeably) thinner and finer. Gillette claims it creates less tug and pull, hence the "Proglide". In my experience, this is certainly true. It literally is the razor doing all the work. All it needs is a guiding hand.
Carried over from the original Fusion is the precision trimmer blade, which Gillette have cleverly placed anti clogging slots, to combat the previous problem of hair getting stuck. The blade is also said to be sharper, although it feels the same to me.
The aloe vera lubricant strip from the Fusion also returns. Added with more lubricant than ever for moisturising according to Gillette, I honestly fail to see how this helps. It's probably the razor's most useless feature, especially considering how most use aftershave.
So what is new to the Proglide Power and not just an improvement. Exclusive to the Power version (not manual) is a microcomb, designed to guide those stubbly hairs to the blades. A good idea on paper and it does seem to work too.
Also added is a new suspension system (which is more flexible than the Fusion), which helps keep the blade to the hairs and reduces the amount of strokes on one area you have to do. Definitely a noticeable change on Gillette's part.
The power is also set to turn off during moments of inactivity if the user forgets to do it themselves. A smart and neat feature there.
The one problem I do have is this supposed ergonomic handle. One of the problems I had with the original Fusion Power was my knuckles switching the power off. While Gillette have made the power button to require a stronger press, they sacrificed the way it grips, with too many ridges on the handle not allowing a tight grip. At least the original Fusion was easier to grip. This newer razor is also much heavier. Understandable but the grip doesn't help to make it easier.
So the razor is easily an improvement. However what hurts is the price. While it has at least come down since its launch, paying somewhere near a tenner is slightly cheeky on Gillette's part. Near £10 is maybe the price the most expensive store should sell it, not all the moderately priced ones. It's up to you to decide if you think the price is worth it or if you would rather just wait a little bit longer. The fact that a pack of 3 blades costs the equivalent of the razor itself is also cheeky. However, after 2 months of weekly use, I'm still on the original blade it came with, so at least the blades last long.
I would say buy this razor if you're fed up of Fusion. It's a must if you're still on the Mach3's. Just try and look for the best price you can.
Summary: Buy it at a good price. Make sure you can afford the blades.
