Gillette Mach3 Razor
Advantages: Good Value for Money, Efficient razor system providing a clean and close shave
Disadvantages: Expensive-ish but better than the cheaper brands and not as expensive as some others.
Over the years I've tried and tested many brands and forms of razor and electric shavers with some of them being cheap and useless, others expensive and efficient but have never found the one system that I've been happy enough to continue buying on a regular basis. I flit from brand to brand and usually base my purchasing decision on price or if something is being offered on special offer as shaving is something that I don't particularly like doing but I realise that it has to be done. Cheap razors are generally a false economy as the blades inevitably become too blunt too quickly and need replacing far too often, expensive razors work well but the cost of replacement blades make me baulk at how much they cost so whenever I resign myself to the fact that I need something better than a cheap supermarket branded razor I end up buying a brand new complete system.
The Mach 3 from Gilette isn't new on the market place and isn't as up to date as later systems that offer more blades for their (extortionate) price yet ended up being the last razor I bought as I saw it on offer online at amazon. At a little under £5.00 and being able to use vouchers to make the purchase I didn't begrudge spending more than I usually would as I figured it wasn't really costing me anything and having had previous experience with a Mach 3 razor before I knew that I'd get plenty of use out of it and wouldn't have to think about buying something else for a few weeks. It comes as shown in the supplied picture, a stick razor with its own stand and included in the price is a replacement razor cartridge.
The Mach 3 is a triple blade razor and is designed to move with the contours of your face ensuring a quick, clean and close shave. It's well designed, comfortable to hold and weighs very little and as far as razors go it does do the job it was designed to do with ease. Shaving, as already mentioned, isn't a highlight of my day but the Mach 3 does make a tedious job that little bit easier and even if I've gone a couple of days without shaving the blades are sharp enough to make quick work of removing my facial hair and stubble.
Used with a good quality shaving gel I find the Mach 3 quick to use, repeat strokes are seldom necessary as it does slice through the hair well and because I don't have to go back over the same area more than a couple of times I find that my skin does not become irritated. I don't have sensitive skin as a rule although I do have a patch of skin on my neck that can become inflamed if I over-shave the area so I like to use something that can remove the hair there without much effort.
How long the blades last will be different for each individual user as everyone's skin is individual to them and facial hair growth can vary, for me I find that if I shave 3 or 4 times a week I can get a good month's worth of use out of a single cartridge before the blades become too blunt and if I'm being lazy and sporting a goatee then they last a bit longer as I have less to shave. For the price this system costs I think it represents the middle ground in terms of how it compares with other razors as it's not the cheapest around but neither is it the most expensive, the fact that it comes with a replacement cartridge makes me more favourable towards it and although these can be bought separately I usually find that it's cheaper just to replace the whole thing.
I do think that the Mach 3 is a good razor overall taking value for money into consideration and although I'll probably flit to another brand once both of my cartridges have become too blunt to use I would still recommend the system to other people. It provides a clean, close shave with minimal irritation for me, it's quick and easy to use and the cartridge head is easy to replace. Razor blades and shaving systems aren't something that I can muster much enthusiasm over in all honesty and are something that I have to buy to keep on-top of my grooming regime but there are enough positive attributes with the Gilette Mach 3 for me to award 4 stars as rating here as well as a recommendation to give one a try should you be looking to try something new that won't break the bank.
Thanks for reading my review.
