Gillette Venus Proskin Sensitive Razor
Advantages: great for sensitive skin, close shave, smooth & silky finish
~ Hair removal in general ~
There are so many different ways to remove unwanted hair from legs, underarms and other areas now and it's always hard to decide what to use. I have sensitive skin and occasionally suffer from eczema on my legs so my skin often gets a little sore and itchy at times. I have used many different ways of getting the unwanted hair removed from my legs. I have tried epilating which was slightly painful at first, how-ever I got used to it. The effects of epilating didn't last long and I often got in growing hairs. I have also waxed a few times; how-ever this can be a lengthy process. Shaving is more convenient and is a much quicker way of removing unwanted hair. I have a razor, how-ever I find that this doesn't really give me a close enough shave and the blades tend to go blunt very quickly. I was recently in my local Boots store, so I decided to look at the range of razors and maybe purchase a new one whilst I was there.
~ Gillette Venus Pro Skin Sensitive ~
The razor is made by Gillette and is suitable for even sensitive skin. The 5 comfort blades mean it gives you a close shave with less irritation, when compared to other razors. The razor has a protective ribbon of moisture above and below the blades, which helps to give a smooth glide. The 5 comfort blades are spaced closer together to reduce pressure which reduces irritation. I have used the Gillette Venus Embrace razor before and this was good, how-ever as this particular razor I am reviewing is for sensitive skin I thought this would be more suitable for me. The razor itself is made from a strong plastic and is a very light mint green/light blue colour with white going down the middle of the razor handle. The razor works exactly the same as my previous Gillette one and the blades simply click onto the end of the handle. Once the razor blades are no longer useable you simply press the button near the blade and it will simply pop off ready for you to click on a new one. I actually like the colour of this razor as its very light and subtle unlike some of the other brighter coloured Razors by Gillette.
The Razor comes in a large blister pack which has the razor, shower pod and 1 cartridge inside. The packaging is quite bulky and you will need a pair of scissors to get into the packaging as it's made from very strong plastic. The plastic can also become rather sharp when it's been cut so be careful when doing this.
~ Price/Availability ~
I purchased this from my local Boots store for £4.99; how-ever this is currently on offer. The normal selling price for this item is actually £9.99. The reduction in price for this item is what also prompted me to buy it and at least try it to see if it was any better than my previous razor that I was currently using. Replacement cartridges are available in the following sized packs:
Pack of 3 - £9.69
Pack of 6 - £17.99
~ The Shower Pod ~
The shower pod is made from strong plastic and has 2 clear suckers on the back of it which means it can stick to the tiles in your bathroom and shower. This is a great idea as it holds the razor in place on front of it and it can also hold up to 3 extra blades inside the pod as well. The razor slide out of the pod easily, without the actual pod falling off of the wall/tiles. The pod also opens easily with the razor on or off the pod so you can change the cartridge/blade easily whilst in the shower or bathroom. The shower pod is a great idea and is a simple and easy way to sore the razor along with the cartridges.
~ Using the Razor ~
To use the product hydrate the skin with slightly warm water and then apply a rich shaving gel such as Satin care Pure & Delicate. Use the razor to shave and then simply rinse any residue off of your legs. I didn't actually have any shaving gel so I simply soaped my legs up using a little shower cream and used that instead. The razor was easy to hold and was light in my hand. The blades glided across my skin easily and it felt smooth and soft as I moved the razor up towards my knee. From the first glide of the blades across my skin it immediately got rid of the unwanted hair and there wasn't any need to go over the same area again. After I finished shaving my legs I rinsed off the excess soap/residue. My legs felt smooth and soft and there were no traces of any stray hairs. I also used the razor on my underarms and the blades glided across my skin easily without nipping the skin. I went over this area twice to ensure all the hairs had gone. My underarms felt smooth and soft after using the razor. I rinsed my skin off and then patted my skin dry to help lock in moisture. I felt my legs after I had patted them dry and they were silky smooth and soft all over. My skin didn't feel or look irritated and there was no itching which I normally get after shaving. I waited 5-10mins before applying a moisturiser to my legs.
~ Overall Opinion ~
The razor was very kind to my skin and the ribbon of moisture helps to ensure the razor glides smoothly across your skin and leaves it feeling smooth and soft. I was expecting to have a little irritation from this as I do suffer from very sensitive and often dry skin; how-ever the razor was gentle and didn't irritate my skin at all. The razor was especially gentle to use on my underarms and removed the hair quickly. In terms of value I think it's very good value when the product is on offer and I would definitely prompt people to buy this whilst the offer is on as it saves you quite a bit of money. As soon as the blades start to get blunt, it's advised that you replace it with a new blade straight away. The blades are very easy to change simply by using the small button on the end of the razor handle. I will continue to use this razor as I prefer it to epilating as I don't get in growing hairs and this is kinder to my skin.
