Jolen Creme Bleach
Advantages: Lightens dark hair
Disadvantages: A bit messy
Stuck in the house with an awful cold, very little on tv except for the X factor and more X factor, my eyes wandered to inspecting my arms and what a shock I got.....the hairs look oh so dark. I'm told that they aren't bad at all but you always think the worst of yourself, well you do if you are me!
I always use Jolen Creme Bleach before going on holiday as the sun doesn't always bleach all of the hairs on my arms which it does on the majority of people as they really are black....in the winter when my skin tone is paler the hairs look even worse so out it comes every 6 - 8 weeks or so.
So off came the obligatory winter woolly, best to wear a vest top when doing your whole arm area as it does rub off on to clothing although has never stained anything of mine.
The packaging is a green box with Jolen Creme Bleach in white writing. Lightens excess dark hair.
Inside the box there is a pot of creme bleach 30ml, inside of which as you would expect a white cream. There is also a thinner tube inside of which is a white flaky powder (7g) known as the acclerator.
There is an instruction leaflet along with a plastic rectangular 'tray' type thing and a plastic spatula. I never use the mixing tray or the spatula, always preferring to use a bowl and a spoon as I need to mix large quantities and this is much less fiddly and messy!
Directions for use
~ Always make a preliminary patch test to see you are allergic to the product, applying to a small area of your inner arm. After 10 minutes wash it off with cold water and if after 24 hours there is no redness or irritation use Jolen as directed.
~ Wash area to be bleached with soap and cold water, then dry the area.
~ 1 quarter teaspoon of accelerator powder to 1 half teaspoon of creme, being careful to use a different spoon for each pot.
~ Now the mixing........this is why I prefer to use a bowl instead of the provided tray as it's much easier to mix without any spillages.
~ The instructions state that the mixture should be applied with the spatula but for my arms I just use my fingertips as they provide a much more even application.
~ Keep the mixture on for approx 10 mins, do a little test and if the hair isn't completely bleached leave it on for a further 5 mins.
~ Wash off with cold or tepid water, warm or hot water tends to irritate your skin even more. This is quite a messy job so be prepared for a mess in your sink.
I find that once you have used it a couple of times you get to know how long it takes for your hair to bleach, mine takes 15 mins so I never even do the 10 minute test nowadays but it is advised when using it for the first time.
After about 5 minutes I feel a tingly feeling as the mixture begins to take a hold on the hairs and do it's job. After 10 mins I always just want to take the stuff off as it begins to itch and sting slightly making it quite uncomfortable. I would hate to see how sensitive skins handle this product!!
You can also tell when it's doing it's job when it begins to bobble slightly and the hairs begin to rise up (hope that makes sense).
Once washed off, my skin is always a little pink and slightly itchy but this goes within the hour.
The major downside of this is that it does bleach your skin so I always tend to end up with a 'ring' mark at the top of my arms which does however blend in after a couple of days or maybe it's because I get used to the line across my arm.
~ Don't apply after a hot bath or a steam filled room as open pores are more sensitive.
~ Don't expose your Jolen treated skin to prolonged periods of sunlight for 24 hours after using it.
~ Don't apply if skin has cuts.
~ Don't use near your eyes.
~ Don't return unused mixed ingredients to either of the containers.
~ Rinse immediately with cold water if product comes in to contact with eyes.
~For larger areas, mix enough bleach to cover one arm, remove it then place on the other arm.
This is suggested by the manufacturers. I have tried it and yes it is more economical but less always comes off than is applied as some of it dries on your skin so you should always have a little bit spare to add to the second arm.
~ As stated earlier use a bowl and a spoon to combine the mixtures.
As of January 2006 the quantities listed above is £4.40.
It is therefore much more economical if you decide you like this product to buy the larger one which is 125ml of creme bleach and 30g of accelerator.
Lightens excess dark hair on face, arms, body and brow.
I have only ever used this on my arms and it does certainly work, if a little uncomfortable and 'stingy', no pain, no gain!!
It does what it says on the box in my experience.
Jolen have listened to those people with sensitive skin and have now introduced a new mild formula with aloe vera, same price as the original formula......my concern would be, would I have to leave it on for 20 minutes instead of 15..........I will certainly be checking it out.
Summary: A great cream bleach.
