Jolen Creme Bleach
Advantages: Works really well, good value for money, lasts a long time, painless
Disadvantages: Smells bad!
As a dark-haired girl, I am not ashamed to admit that I use a bleach to lighten facial hair. Yes, I might look funny doing it, but in my opinion I'd look a hell of a lot funnier with a moustache! Don't get me wrong, I'm no bearded lady, but I've been using Jolen for several years because it just makes me feel more confident about something that, let's face it, most girls have, especially brunettes.
For me, bleaching is a far less scary prospect than waxing my upper lip - stumpy regrowth hairs might look funnier than if I'd left well alone! - and it is a painless, quick way of tackling hair a little darker than you'd like.
Jolen can be used on arms, face, or pretty much anywhere except "sensitive areas" (the location of which I think you can draw your own conclusions) and around the eyes. I wouldn't recommend using it to bleach brows, as there can be fall-out occasionally. The mix contains hydrogen peroxide, which would be very painful to get into your peepers!
Jolen comes packaged in a plain blue-green box with white print, which contains a 30ml tub of creme bleach, 7g vial of accelerator, plastic mixing board and spatula. It also, of course, comes with complete instructions, which are quite straightforward.
To mix the bleach, use the spatula to measure "one quarter teaspoon" onto the tray. I believe this to equate to about a third of the spatula, quite heaped. Add "one half teaspoon creme" (about a full spatula) and mix together so the grains of accelerator are spread fairly evenly throughout the cream mixture. The exact amounts don't need to be precise, as long as you have the ratio about right, as obviously you would need a lot more for bleaching arm hair, etc (although you can spread it onto the other arm once removed from the first). What I have listed is about the right amount for an upper lip application.
First wash the area with soap and cold water (hot will open pores and make it more likely to sting). Apply the mixture using the spatula, and try to smooth it on up and down to get underneath hairs as well. Once it's in place, leave for around 10 minutes. I would really recommend you test it out on a small patch of skin first somewhere not so visible, just in case you don't react so well!
I have quite sensitive skin and usually feel a tingle, although not a sting or burn as such. What gets me is the horrible ammonia smell, which obviously is right underneath my nose! I often find that the mix starts to flake off after a few minutes, so I prefer to put a towel or something around me while it's on in case it decides to bleach my clothes, and usually lie down for a nice relax until it's finished so it stays in place as much as possible. (Obviously, if you live with other people, it is advisable to carry out this procedure in hiding, too!)
I usually remove using the spatula and then a flannel or cleansing wipe to get the bits that are rubbed in. More often than not, if left on for the full 10 minutes and correctly applied, it works first time. Once in a while I will need to touch up little spots with the mixture I just removed.
I tend to get a slightly red patch on my face for a while after, which soon subsides, but don't use it if you're just about to go out, especially if you have sensitive skin, and don't use right out of the shower or bath when your pores are open.
You can buy Jolen from Boots or any other good chemists for around £4.50. I have only used it for my upper lip, and am on my second pot ever, and I only got this because I was sharing with my mum who I no longer live with (hey, her genes gave me dark hair, she can share the bleach!). Results typically last 2-4 weeks for me. I couldn't find an expiry date on mine but I know from experience that it still works (without hurting!) for a good while - probably just as long as it would take to use up.
Jolen is not tested on animals :)
Summary: Quick, easy and painless - what more could you wish for? (besides no moustache)
