I have been searching for the best wax strips for many years, trying various brands to achieve smooth skin with minimal effort and pain. I mainly use wax strips for my bikini line as I am happy regularly shaving my legs and underarms. Obviously, this area is quite sensitive so having a good wax kit is very important.
I purchased these wax strips in Boots and paid £3.99. The box contains 20 wax strips and 3 moisturising post wipes. They come in a white card box with the word Nair across the box in big letters, the box also states that the strips remove even short hairs, results last up to 4 weeks, they are quick and easy to use and give beautiful, moisturised and smooth skin.
Instructions to use the strips are fairly standard as you would expect with most brands of wax strips. Hair can be more than one week of growth but no longer than 1cm. The instructions recommend doing a patch test 24 hours before full use, to ensure there is no allergic reaction.
When ready to use, the area needing waxing needs to be washed with mild soap and water (but not in a bath) and dried thoroughly. Take a wax strip and rub between palms for a couple of minutes to soften the wax, I found this to happen quicker with these strips than I found with others in the past. The two halves of the strips need to be separated by pulling from the corners to leave you with two separate strips to use. Apply one strip to the area needing waxing in direction of hair growth and smooth down. Then holding the skin taut (very important!) pull strip back quickly in opposite direction of hair growth to remove the hairs. You can reuse each strip by folding it in half to rub between palms to resoften it. Once waxing is finished, use one of the post wipes to soothe and moisturise the skin. Hot baths and sunbathing should then be avoided for 24 hours, and avoid applying anything on the underarms after waxing for 24 hours also.
These wax strips were pretty much hassle free to use. Actually using them was easy, but like I said the instructions were what you would expect from wax strips in any brand so this concept was simple to me. I think they would also be suitable for wax beginners as the wax softened quickly and a minimal amount was left on the skin. I also found these less painful compared to other brands, waxing is no way pleasant anyway but I found these a lot less horrible to use. The wipes were the best bit, they removed all wax residue from my skin, took away all tingling and my skin felt soothed straight away. They also smell lovely!
These will definitely be my wax strip choice from now on. 5 out of 5.
For people in the UK just to let you know this kit can be brought from savers for £1.99! As long as you read the instructions they work brilliantly and will leave you feeling sexy and smooth! They worked really well for my first time waxing from home and I would recommend these for every one.
Even though I usually have my legs or bikini area waxed professionally, I regularly have to do it myself, for financial but also practical reasons (when abroad for example). I therefore have tried most of the brands available from boots that is 3, 4 or 5 if your lucky. The market of waxing kits is a surprisingly small one which occupies, under the shaving foams, a tiny area of even the largest boots. And yet I don't know any woman who has never shaved or waxed herself!
Price and Packaging:
All this rambling to say that when you need a homemade wax job, you either buy Nair, Boots' own or Veet... Their prices are roughly similar (from 5 to 8 pounds) , Boot's own slightly cheaper of course, and come in a range of products corresponding to different use, parts of the body or strength (bikini, face, legs, sensitive skin wax, wax for tough short hair, etc). Which brings the first advantage of this waxing kit: it includes large wax strips for your legs, and smaller ones for the bikini (or other smaller areas). This was a big plus, as it meant I could do an overall holiday prep of my body with the one pack. There is in total 32 wax strips, so plenty enough to do your bikini area and your lower legs (and maybe thighs, depends on everyone's size and hair density).
This kit contained not only the usual finishing soothing wipes but also preparation cooling wipes, which was a very welcome supplement (which is not always supplied in other brands). This meant I could clean the area that was to be waxed (indispensible to avoid infections) and numb a teeny bit my skin (although we're not talking miracle here, it just makes waxing a bit more comfortable, espacially on your bikini). The finishing wipe was good enough and removed all traces of wax away quite well.
I was neither impressed nor unimpressed by the wax. It worked fairly well overall on my legs, but left some hair here and there I had to get with twizzers. My hair is quite fine, so maybe that's why it didn't grip all of them. It did not leave much wax at all on my legs, which can happen quite often with wax strips.
On my bikini, the smaller waxing strips enabled me to be quite precise and not harm any part of skin that did not need waxing. It was also good to get to those angles a large wax band would simply not be able to get a hold of properly. However, the wax only worked when applied very precisely directly in the direction of the hair growth (and therefore pulled in the opposite direction), if not, it just hurt like hell, and leaves all the wax and your hair on your skin. Knowing that the hair in the bikini area grows in every direction possible, a fair amount a technique was required as well as a good knowledge of my own hair growth directionality! It was also quite time consuming, as I could do only very small areas at a time, and created some awkward waxing positions... But I managed to do quite a decent job eventually. Experience required though!
Overall, a good wax, although not exceptional, which is much easier to use on legs than on the bikini area. Would recommend it for those who are used to doing their bikini wax themselves.
Also quite good value for money as I managed to do both my legs and bikini using the one pack (which was in promotion, under 5 pounds).
I'm never been a fan of wax strips, when I've used them in the past I've found that they either leave most of the hair still attached to you or the wax comes off the strip and sticks to your skin and it's nigh on impossible to get it off without scrubbing your skin off. However, with the credit crunch I thought I'd give them another go.
This pack is availible in Boots, it costs around £5.80 full price, but all Nair products were on offer with 1/3 when I bought my pack.
The pack contains 3 wipes to use before you wax and 3 wipes to use after you wax. There are 16 large wax strips which are attached to each other in twos and 16 small wax strips which are also attached to each other in twos.
The pre-wax wipes were there to somehow reduce the pain caused by waxing. They smelt strongly of menthol so I think this must have been the active ingredient. They certaintly seemed to do their job, it did hurt, its always going to, but it wasn't agonizing which waxing can quite easily be.
The wax strips have to be rubbed in your hands to warm them before you pull the two strips apart from each other. This worked fine with the smaller wax strips, but with the larger ones it was quite difficult to pull them apart without the strips sticking to themselves - the bottom of the strip seemed determined to attach itself to the wax in the middle and was quite hard to pull off. I did find on one occassion that despite thinking I had warmed the wax enough when I came to seperate the strips the wax was completely pulled off one of the strips which was a bit of waste.
The wax itself was blue and therefore very easy to see if you still had any residue on your skin. I was impressed with how effective the strips were, they removed all the hair quickly and reasonably painlessly, nothing like wax strips I had used previously.
The post-wax wipes were fantastic, a really useful thing to include, they removed any was residue on your skin quickly and easily with hardly any effort at all. I was really impressed as there's nothing worse than sticky bits on your skin that just aren't moving.
I was very impressed by this product, wax strips have certainly improved since the last time I've used them. I do feel that the strips themselves could have been easier to pull apart, but other than that I have no complaints at all about this product and would highly recommend it to anybody who already waxes or even if you're looking to try and wax for the first time.
Calming & cooling pre-wipes are provided to cleanse and prepare the skin, plus you also get post-wipes to leave the skin moisturised and conditioned!
