Veet Easy Wax Electrical Roll On Kit
Date: 15/06/13, updated on 19/09/13 (50 review reads)
Advantages: Was effective at hair removal although difficult to ensure even coverage, mess free
Disadvantages: Long time to heat wax, short lead, strips too short, not enough strips provided
As a BzzAgent, I am lucky enough to have the opportunity to test products for free in return for spreading the word about them to others. (It's not a paid job, sadly, but a nice way to try stuff for free. Anybody interested can sign up online at www.bzzagent.co.uk) My latest campaign has been for the Veet Easy Wax electrical roll-on kit which has an RRP of £29.99, so appeared to be a great freebie! I have never tried waxing before so I was intrigued by this new, mess-free method of home waxing and delighted to have the opportunity to try the EasyWax kit out for free, thanks to BzzAgent and Veet.
This kit comes with everything required to complete a waxing session at home with minimal preparation and an easy mess-free cartridge based applicator. The single cartridge included with the initial kit is supposed to contain enough wax for 'up to 4 wax sessions.' This sounds like a pretty generous package, compared to the cost of salon waxing treatments but the smallprint explains that a 'session' equals hair removal from both lower legs so it's not quite as comprehensive as it may initially appear.
This EasyWax system can be used to wax legs, underarms and even bikini line although the instructions recommend beginning with the less sensitive leg area for the first time. There is a separate smaller attachment to cover the underarm and bikini line area but I haven't had the opportunity (or courage) to try this kit out yet, preferring to stick with the legs!
When the kit arrived, I must admit that it took me quite a while to get around to using it at all. Part of the reason was because I was waiting for my leg hair to grow to a suitable length but I was also pretty apprehensive about the pain! Delaying my first use gave me ample opportunity to read about other BzzAgent's experiences with the kit and gained some helpful advice. Many reviewers were critical of the kit and its end results but those who seemed more positive about the Easy Wax system seemed to have longer leg hair. This gave me the perfect excuse to procrastinate even longer and let my leg hair develop to a decent length. By the time I used the kit, I had about three weeks of growth so certainly had plenty for Veet to get to grips with.
I found the step by step instructions included to be clear, comprehensive and easy to follow, with helpful diagrams, safety information and troubleshooting advice. The main issue was that the time given for the cartridge to heat up sufficiently for the wax to flow freely was vastly underestimated. It actually took the best part of an hour to heat up fully, rather than the twenty minutes already suggested. Fortunately, the kit can be left plugged in and sits on its own secure plastic base so this was not problematic, it just means that the process can't be undertaken on a last minute whim.
Once hot enough, applying the wax was simple and mess-free, with the hot pink wax spreading evenly and visibly down the length of my legs. I did think the lead was a little on the short side. I needed to keep the applicator plugged in whilst applying the wax to maintain the heat levels and the wire was stretched to its maximum capacity. I would have preferred a little extra room to manoeuvre, particularly when trying to tackle the backs of my legs which was a little tricky. I was also disappointed by the length of the fabric strips included as they were nowhere near enough to cover the length of my lower leg, meaning I had to use two strips for each section of my leg which seemed pretty wasteful. I'm no leggy model by any means so I really don't understand why the strips weren't much longer to provide more coverage, particularly as at least 1 cm at the bottom needs to remain wax free to allow room to pull the strip off quickly and effectively.
The actual end results were pretty impressive however. I actually found this to be far less painful than I had anticipated. In some weird way, I quite enjoyed the sensation of pulling the strips off! It did take my breath away but was also pretty satisfying. (Perhaps my pain threshold is higher, having given birth to three children!) I had allowed my leg hair to grow pretty long before waxing and I was surprised by how well the wax and the strips coped with the hair, leaving my legs smooth and completely hair free, with the hair clearly visible on the back of the strips.
My legs were left slightly tacky after removing the strips but the kit helpfully included four individually wrapped wipes, specially formulated to remove any wax residue. I found the wipes to be pretty effective and generously coated and sized, so I only needed to use one wipe per leg.
I did find my application left a little to be desired and I ended up with a few stray patches where I hadn't quite managed to cover every last section of my legs, although I expect that this would improve with regular use. I was pleased, however, that I didn't experience any irritation or soreness after use, particularly as I do tend to have dry and sensitive skin. I did have to go over some of the missed sections with a razor afterwards, to cover the missed areas, which was a little disappointing and did seem to defeat the object of the time and effort involved in waxing in the first place!
Having used this kit on a single occasion, I found the cartridge to include sufficient wax to treat both of my lower legs, with lots of wax left over judging by the weight of the cartridge after use. The only issue with the pack's contents was that I found there to be far too few strips so after a single use, I managed to use all of the twelve strips provided so there is a clear disparity between the amount of wax and the number of strips provided.
The question of whether I would use it again depends on the cost of the replacement strips and wipes. If I can find these at a reasonable price, I may consider re-using it as it was relatively effective, relatively pain-free and mess-free. I wouldn't be prepared to pay full RRP for the refills, however, as it works out far more expensive than shaving does and I still had to resort to a razor blade to deal with stray hairs anyway.
