Sassoon VSST2960UK Intelligence Straightener
by xxfoxyredxx
Just recently I had a huge and horrible shock. My precious GHD'S decided to stop working on me suddenly. Being a bit skint at the moment and not being able to find anywhere to repair them right now I knew I had to buy some cheap ones and was really worried as I'm used to my ultra amazing top of the range babies!
I knew I ... needed really cheap ones for now but I just didn't want a brand or anything that I'd never heard of. I'm also used to nice looking straighteners and so when I spotted these in my local Superdrug store retailing at only £15.00 a pair and in a nice box and being 'Sassoon'.......a name I'm very well aware of I opted to buy and try them!
The Packaging:
The box is cardboard, purple and blues in colour with a photograph of four women on the front of it showing straight and curly/wavy styles that can be achieved (supposedly) with these straighteners and we are told that they are Sassoon Solutions 'Intelligence 230' and that they are New Revolution In Straightening 'First Straighteners With Pre-Programmed Settings For Optimum Hair Care And Style' and that they have 4 intelligence settings for thick/curly hair, coloured hair, fine/normal hair and damaged/synthetic hair. Other information stated on the box includes being told plenty about the product and what they should achieve and contact details for Vidal Sassoon are given. Inside there is a pamphlet again telling us a bit about the product once again and a guarantee slip is there too to send off and register the product with. Nice classy packaging this is with all information on it really well laid out and not too much of it either!
A Bit About The Product According To The Information Listed On The Packaging:
Its colour, its shine, its texture and structure of the hair itself. That's why we've developed the first straightener designed specifically to care for different hair types!
Solutions eliminates the guess work from heat styling as each pre-programmed setting is designed to best meet the needs of your hair and bring out its full potential.
What Is Smart Heat?:
Sassoon introduces the first styling collection with revolutionary SMART HEAT technology. Each appliance contains a pre-programmed sensor chip that automatically adjusts temperature to the correct levels for your hair type.
Straightener Specification:
4 intelligent settings pre-programmed with SMART HEAT to straighten you hair the right way
Advanced ceramic tourmaline plates
Rubber grip pads
Setting key lock
Heat proof pouch
3M salon length swivel cord
2 year guarantee
The Straighteners:
In the box you get a heat resistant off goldish/pink coloured pouch which is long and simply says in silver writing to one side of it that they are Sassoon. This is big enough to pop the straighteners and cord into with complete ease and simply flaps over to keep them secure. It looks nice, expensive and being heat resistant to stop these burning anything you can pop these into it as soon as they are switched off from the plug so it really is a nice bit of kit this and superb for traveling in style!
The straighteners are also very nice looking indeed and look rather professional. They are plastic feeling and long and open and close with ease and are like a bronzy and pinky shimmery colour. On the top side of one of the plates we are again told in silver writing that they are Sassoon and then to the top of them there is a small control panel. What you then have is 5 buttons of which one is an off and on switch. From there you then have to pick your heat setting and remember non heat temperature is given with these just simply coloured codes around the small round buttons so one is dark blue (Damaged/Synthetic Hair/Damage Defence), another is turquoise coloured (Fine/Normal Hair/Volume Boost) the next one up is bright pink (Coloured Hair/Vibrant Results) and the very top one is yellow coded (Thick Curly Hair/Moisture Protection).
For me though this is a hard coding system to remember and luckily there is tied to the end of them a browny coloured plastic label that is thick and rubbery and so can be left on as it is heat resistant and that shows the colour code system on it. I assume you are meant to remove this but then without keeping the box or the instruction leaflet you would never remember the settings you need which is a slight niggle with me and seems a bit daft!
With ceramic tourmaline plates which match the colour of the rest of the straighteners these are comfortable enough to hold, the plates are smooth and easy to move and they are easy to pinch together one handed. Lightweight and with a 3M cord as well I have plenty of room to move and do appreciate a long lead.
However I find these to not be great hair straighteners sadly and that they may look quite the part but fail to give me the quick and easy results that I am used to.
Yes I can curl and straighten my hair with these but it takes alot of time. First off I have no idea which is the highest heat setting so I usually opt for the thick/curly one (yellow) as I do have wavy hair and although at the moment I have short hair it still takes rather a few goes on small sections of hair to get them straight. I do use a heat defence spray and do find that over time I can get straighten my hair (and on long hair I did get neat curls too!)but I am not used to having to use straighteners for so long also I notice that after a couple of hours my waves and curls do ping back oddly enough and never did in comparison to my GHD'S.
The plates on these are large and slim enough, the plastic though which is the casing does feel a little on the cheap side and although they work and instantly heat almost I find that they don't get really hot and even feel that after a few uses that these are not heating up to as hot as they once did which looking about on websites about these, I notice I'm not the only one to think this so I will be contacting the manufacturer asap and I haven't had them above a few weeks so they are still under guarantee.
These are simply ok. I like the look of them just find them time consuming to use but a good aspect to these is that you can use them on hair extensions as well as 'real' hair and I don't find that they've damaged my hair at all or made it duller but as for the promise of volume boosting and vibrant results...not really just average ones sadly.
Available from all over the internet and from all good chemists etc including Superdrug. Read the complete review |

Vidal Sassoon VS880 Straightners
by jasmine6
Avoid, avoid, avoid! I wish this is what someone had told me before I wasted £15 (ok, I know it's not that bad) on these straightners in Superdrug.
I was lulled by the sleek look and cheap price - they reminded me of something you would see stylists using in hair salons, so I stupidly thought they might work like that too. But ... no. I'm not sure how these things made it into the shops, as they don't even get hot enough to straighten hair, especially when it's thick and stubborn like mine. I left them to heat up for about ten minutes as instructed, and then tried straightening a small chunk of hair. All that happened was that the lock looked slightly smoother afterwards - but it still turned upwards at the end as if nothing had happened to it at all. I left them to heat up for a bit longer, tried again and eventually gave up. Although I had succeeded in making my hair look presentable enough to go out in public, the results were far below what I would expect and would never be good enough if, for example, I was going on a date. The other thing was that I found some of my hair got caught in the sides of the 'floating' ceramic plates which a) was sore and b) resulted in a not-so-lovely burnt hair smell.
There were no safety features (I always expect this kind of thing to have an automatic turn-off mechanism), other than an indicator light to tell you they were on.
Overall, I don't think the low price and stylish look of the irons compensates for their poor performance. I have since splashed out on some GHDs and the difference is amazing - they get at least twice as hot as the VS880, straighten in one sweep, don't catch my hair, take only ten seconds to heat up and switch off automatically. Vidal Sassoon VS880 Straightners
by Pickle_99_uk
I have had these straightners for over a year but only use them once a week or so therefore they perhaps have not been tested as much as they should be. They have a ceremic plate to make it easier to straighten hair and less likely to cause damage, the heat up in a few minutes and get incredibly hot, the are easy to grip and glide ... through hair without any pain or hassle and the cord is long enough so you don't need an extension lead. I would like the plates to be a bit longer so I can do more hair at once when I'm in a rush. Mine have a lock and unlock button to hold the plates in the locked position but this button only worked once or twice then it broke however it doesn't affect the straightners working. Finally there is a button to tell you when the straightners are hot enough. A good product. Read the complete review |
