“ Brand: Babyliss / Type: Straightener „
I don't straighten all my hair all the time, but I do have a fringe and short bits I need to control, so it is essential I straighten at least some of my hair every single day, otherwise I would look completely out of control! I own a pair of GHDs personally, but I bought these as a second pair to take round my partners house. They were around £20 on amazon and I actually used my dooyoo points to pay for them so it felt like a complete bargain! I didn't know anything about them, Babyliss is a well known make and I wanted to go ceramic as I had heard this does the best straightening. As I already had a really good pair of straighteners for main use I didn't want to spend much on this back up pair!
The straighteners are dark in colour with pale plates and a felt type section over the outside of the plates, which makes gripping easier. They have an on off switch and temperature comtrol. I would recommend havoing a play with them and working out the minimum temperature you can use which will straighten your hair. If you use too much temperature your hair will know about it in a few weeks, so beware!
I found the straighteners straightened my hair well. They don't have the X factor like the GHDs, which give that amazing sleek feel, but I sort of like the not quite perfect look so these are great for that. They are also easy to use, once you have mastered which temperature is perfect for you. They take about 10 seconds to heat up. It may seem a long time when you are waiting and staring at them, but it's not really that long!
There are two downsides to these straighteners. One is the temperature I mentioned earlier, if they are too high you will get excessive spilt ends and damaged hair. The other is that they feel a bit like they pull at the end of your hair and get a bit caught. It is only a tiny effect, but just doesn't feel as nice and smooth, and as gentle as the GHDs. However they are a fifth of the price!!
These Ceramic Straightening Tongs actually belong to a relative of mine but I use them on a regular basis (at least once a week usually) and have done for the past year or so.
These straighteners are quite sleek to look at and weigh around 722g so are light enough to use everyday for a good 10 or 15 minutes without worrying about your arm beginning to ache or anything like that.
They can currently be purchased from Amazon for £40.00 including a heat resistant mat but they may also be available elsewhere cheaper so remember to shop around (Boots often have deals on items like this such as 1/3 off).
The straighteners are black with gold ceramic plates which are 1 1/2 inches wide and therefore designed for medium to long hair styles. There are three buttons on these straighteners: a power button, temperature up and temperature down.
When the straighteners are turned on the initial heat setting (180 degrees) is displayed on the dial and this can be adjusted down to 130 degrees or up to 230 degrees in increments of 10 degrees simply by pressing the relevant button. The numbers will flash until the straighteners are at the requested temperature and it takes under 15 seconds to heat up to the full 230 degrees.
I have thick, coarse hair with flyaway hairs at the front of my head so I usually spray my hair with a heat protection spray and then set the temperature to 200. I always section off my hair as I find this is a far easier way of ensuring that I have straightened all of my hair. It takes around 10 minutes to straighten my entire head of hair and I have also used this to curl my hair in the past with fantastic results taking around 20 minutes (including copious amounts of hairspray!).
I believe these straighteners are fantastic value for money as they are over half the price of GHD's but seem to do the job just as well and almost as fast. The heat resistant mat is a fantastic idea but my Mum's one has been lost so I am just careful where I set the straighteners down to cool.
There is one problem with this straightner and that is that over time the cord has become damaged. (it swivels to prevent damage but when it has been wound up in the past it's began to damage the lead) This means that from time to time the straighteners will turn off but it's usually just a few seconds but I've noticed the number has disappeared from the dial so I will just press the power button again and then wait for it to heat up.
I am going to rate these 4/5 as they give me fantastically sleek looking, silky smooth, frizz free hair in just 10 minutes and with a minimal amount of product to ensure I don't damage my hair too much.
