Advantages: reasonably priced, 3m swivel cord, rounded edge for curling
Disadvantages: straighteners become less effective over time
In need of a new pair of hair straighteners after my previous ones went 'pop', I popped along to Argos and purchased Babyliss Pro 230 Styler hair straighteners costing £29.99. The hair straighteners obviously can use be used to straighten your hair, but also to curl your hair thanks to the rounded edge. Also included in the box are 4 sectioning hair clips and a heat protection mat.
Babyliss Pro 230 Hair Straighteners are Black in colour and easy to use. You can use them to straighten you hair by closing the plates around a section of hair and sliding downwards or you can create wavy/curly hair by wrapping your hair around the straighteners and glide along from root to tip in a downward motion to create a curl.
The hair straighteners have Nano-ceramic plates. Whilst I have no idea what 'nano' has to do with hair straighteners and have only heard of the word when watching sci fi programmes, the advanced ceramic plates enable the straighteners to heat up to 230 degrees in 15 seconds. After use, the straighteners take around 15 minutes to completely cool down. Should you forget to turn off your straighteners, the appliance has an automatic shut off feature for added safety and will automatically shut off after being left on for 72 minutes.
Babyliss Pro 230 straighteners do not have a digital display so there is a simple 'on' switch which flashes red as soon as it's turned on. After 15 seconds the light stays on continuously to show that the straighteners are ready to use. Babyliss Pro 230 has 10 heat settings. You can set the straighteners to the desired heat setting by turning the dial. Use number 1 for very fine, delicate hair and up to setting 10 for coarse unruly hair.
The plates are 12cm long and 2.5cm wide, making it easier and quicker to use if you have long hair. As they have a rounded edge I am able to get to within 0.5cm of the hair root. I think I could get closer to the root however haven't tried as I don't want to end up getting burnt or singeing my ears.
One thing which I like about the straighteners is that they have a 3 metre salon swivel cord. The swivel cord means that you don't need to keep on twisting your wrist all the time and don't end up using the straighteners upside down as the cord swivels 360 degrees.
My hair is of medium thickness, curly and can be frizzy at times. I first tried the number 1 heat setting, but this did nothing for my hair so I have to use the highest heat setting. Babyliss claims that the straighteners heat to 230 degrees, however I don't believe that they do (based on my previous Remington hair straighteners which did). Initially, the straighteners used to really straighten my hair, however after a month of use I have started to notice that the straighteners don't seem to be as effective and it now takes me a lot longer to style my hair and I need to section my hair in much smaller strands.
Part from a little texturing cream/wax, I don't tend to use any styling products on my hair, but I feel that after using the Babyliss Pro 230 straighteners if you want to keep your hair straight all day you will need to use hairspray. I sometimes find that despite taking time to section my hair and straighten it properly, my hair can develop a kink within 30 minutes, which it didn't used to do after using my old hair straighteners.
Overall I feel that Babyliss Pro 230 hair straighteners for those who have short easy to style hair or those who don't need to straighten their hair everyday. The straighteners are Ok but if you want poker straight hair it is worth investing in more money and buying Remington or GHD straighteners. They are reasonably priced at £29.99, however I feel that they have become less effective over time and could make straightening long or unruly hair time consuming, therefore they get 3 stars from me.
