Advantages: lovely packaging, lovely straight hair

Disadvantages: lighter styler, not as hot

Unfortunately, I am "Blessed" (and I use that term very lightly) with hair that is neither curly nor straight - wavy! It is wavy to the point where it isn't attractive and seems to have a mind of its own.

Throughout high school the popularity of hair straighteners grew dramatically, but it was the introduction of the ceramic plated GHD stylers which changed my hair for good.

My first ever pair of GHD's were a pair of Mark 3 Pink GHD's with black plates which I received as a present about 4 years ago. The GHD's were a complete revelation! They zoomed through my hair turning it from a wavy mess into sleek glossy locks.

Unfortunately, nothing lasts forever, and this was the case with my pink ghds. It wasn't the case at all that they broke, however over time they lost some of their heat and became less effective. I also travel alot and I don't think it helped with the GHDs being thrown in and out of suitcases all the time.

I was planning to buy new GHDs but to be honest, I was quite wary about the cost. Although I needed them, I always find it quite painful to make a big purchase like that, no matter how necessary it might be. Quite luckily though, I managed to buy myself the "ghd Iconic Eras Glamour Limited Edition Gold Series Classic Styler Hair Straightener Gift Set" from Amazon for the incredible price of £50. This was a one off and I don't want people to believe that this is a regular price, far from it. I bought these in the Amazon Black Friday sale week. The regular selling price for this set is £129.

This is not simply a box of GHD's. In this set you get the mark 4 styler in a gunmetal grey with gold plates. You receive the box they come in, as well as a pretty bag to store them in which looks like an oversized clutch bag. You also get a cap to put on the end of the GHDs when you have used them, meaning you won't burn yourself when you pack your GHD's away again. You also get your clips to seperate your hair.

The packaging for this set is very pretty but essentially, its pretty useless. I'm essentially incredibly lazy, and as I use my GHD's on a daily basis, I very rarely pack them away into the oversized clutch bag that they provide you with. However, this could be helpful if you were going away for the weekend and wanted to pack all your hair products into one area.

To turn the GHDs on, you slide the button into the on position. The button on this styler now has an LED GHD sign on it which is a nice touch, and the styler beeps when it is ready for use. Maybe I'm just mistaken, but originally I always thought GHDs were meant to be ready to use in 7 seconds, but these take around 20 seconds to get upto full heat.

In your hand, the GHDs feel much more lightweight than the old styler, considerably so infact. Maybe I'm just mourning my old pair, but they just don't feel as hot as my other pair. I section all my hair off just as they would at the hairdressers and concentrated on a few inches of hair at a time to get the finish that you desire. Although they do not seem as hot, my hair is just as straight.

The set also includes a small booklet on achieving certain styles using the styler, which is useful as I'm pretty rubbish at doing hair in styles other than messy or straight.

Although I am perfectly happy with my GHDs and they do the job just as well, they just don't seem as substantial or hot as the others, and I wonder whether this pair will last as long as the others.

Summary: Great Straighteners, just not sure whether new means better
