GHD IV Styler
Advantages: Straighten my hair fantastically with very little effort
Disadvantages: As with all other heat styling products - can dry the ends out
Since having my hair permed on a regular basis in my teens, my hair naturally now is quite thick and sticks out at the ends making me look like I have been dragged through a hedge backwards. I owned a set of Babyliss hair straighteners but due to the thickness of my hair, they just didn't seem to do anything to help. My colleagues at work all raved about their GHD hair straighteners so I thought they were worth a shot to see if they made a difference.
At £99.99 a set, these were a little out my price range so they went straight on the Christmas list and I was lucky enough to find that Father Christmas delivered them for me. I used them the very next morning and immediately knew that they were worth the money.
I received the GHD IV straighteners which are black and quite thin with gold ceramic plates. They certainly looked the business. If you have really thick, frizzy hair, then they do a thicker set where the plates are more paddle like, but for my hair, these were absolutely fine.
The first thing I noticed was how easily they glided through my hair. My hair is a little frizzy at the ends but reasonably straight with just a few kinks here and there but my previous straighteners used to struggle to glide through my hair so at times I actually ended up with more kinks than when I started. There was no such problem with these straighteners. The plates are really smooth and from the top to the ends of my hair, not once did these straighteners struggle to glide through the hair.
The next thing I noticed with these straighteners is just how well they worked. I only had to pull the straighteners through the sections of my hair once to get completely straight, sleek looking hair which is a million miles away from my previous straighteners whereby I was having to go over the same section of hair a good 3/4 times before I could see any improvement and obviously this is no good for my hair. As they worked so well I found that using these straighteners is less time consuming as they work so well which is a godsend in the mornings.
The straighteners have a good 2.8m swivel cord which is perfect as my mirror is a bit far away from the plug so I have struggled in the past but these reach to my mirror with ease. You simply plug them in and flick the switch in the middle of the straighteners to turn them on. They light up and start flashing to show they are warming up. They also beep as you switch them up, then beep again when they are ready to be used. They only take around 30 seconds to heat up which really surprised me though be careful as they do get rather hot, even in this short space of time and I have burnt myself a couple of times on the plates. Even after use, they do take a good few minutes to completely cool back down again so even though they are not switched on, be careful if leaving them lying around when children are about.
One thing that always concerns me with straighteners is accidently leaving them on, but with these you can sleep easy knowing that they do have a sleep mode and will cut themselves off if left on for too long so you aren't likely to burn your house down with these!
If you were to purchase these as a present, they come in a divine black and gold box which makes the straighteners look even more expensive than they actually are and I also got a DVD with mine showing me how to use the straighteners to their full effect. I have very little hairdressing knowledge and can only do the basics to my own hair so I found this DVD really interesting as it gives you step by step tips on how to create different styles with your straighteners.
GHD's are known for being the premium brand of hair straighteners. Yes, you pay for the name, but after using these straighteners for over two years now, it is obvious that these really are excellent straighteners and worth their money. I use these straighteners every single day and not once have they failed to work (touch wood), though if you do purchase some and have a problem with them, they do come with a manufacturers guarantee of 2 years.
The only problem I have found with these straighteners is that through constant use, the ends of my hair have become extremely dry. I use a heat protection spray now when using these, but I do find I have to use quite an intensive moisturiser every day when washing my hair to combat the dryness, though this is a problem you would get using any straighteners, not just these, but it is something to be mindful of.
Overall, there isn't one single negative point I can make about these straighteners. My hair now has a style to it every day instead of my natural 'dragged through a hedge look'. These straighteners have transformed my hair and I really would be lost without them now. Yes, they are expensive and there are much cheaper ones on the market, but I wouldn't be without my GHD's now and therefore they come with a high recommendation from me.
