I wanted some hair straighteners to try to tame my hair when I get up in the morning as where it is so wavy it tends to stick out at all kinds of weird angles in the mornings. We were in Wilkinsons the other day and they had a stand with some funky looking hair styling tools on it which included some mini straighteners. I thought these might be just what I was looking for as I have quite short hair so don't need full size ones.

The make of the straighteners is Ionika and there were lots of different patterns to choose from so I got myself a pair of gold and black tiger stripe ones. They were reduced to £8 which I thought was a brilliant price, I wish I had had enough money to buy some more as they would have been brilliant presents for Christmas next year. When I got home I Googled the name Ionika as I hadn't heard of it and they have their own website and sell these same straighteners on it for £25!!! so I got a bargain.

The straighteners have an on off switch inside where the plates are, I thought this was going to be a problem switching it on and off without burning myself but found it was quite easy to do without any trouble, although once I had used them a couple of times I found I didn't bother switching them off, I just turn the socket off and then unplug and leave them to cool down and then put them away.

The lead on them is a decent size, our sockets are down near the skirting boards and I can stand up and see myself in the mirror above the fireplace and still have them plugged in down the side. It must be about 2m but I haven't a measure to try it for sure.

The arms of the straighteners are just a bit thicker than my fingers so really a good size to use on my short hair. I use them mainly for doing the side burn bits and any little bits sticking out on the top. I find I can even make my hair curl round by dragging my hair through and bending it as I go.

They don't take long to heat up either. I usually plug them in while I brush the rest of my hair then by the time I want to straighten the sides they are hot enough to use. They stay hot for a bit too so if I am in a different room where the plug socket is not near the mirror I can unplug them and take them over and do my hair no problem without them cooling down before I have finished.

I am really pleased with this buy, they are absolutely brilliant and I don't know how on earth I managed before. Doing my hair in the mornings is a doddle now and I would highly recommend them.

A good set of mini straighteners which are ideal for fringes and (maybe) shorter choppy styles.

I've got very long straight hair, it's too long to really do anything with so I tend to be a wash and brush kinda girl. Sometimes I'll borrow my daughter's GHDs but not very often as it's too time consuming when my hair is already the right side of straight. When Mark and I went away for a couple of nights recently I meant to pack the straighteners as we were having a posher than usual night out and I wanted to look my best. Like a complete numpty I forgot all about them and ended up buying these Ionika mini straighteners from the hotel salon.

The design is fantastic, first things first. The tattoo design reminds me of the Iron Fist shoe range; girly punk, pink with edge. The entire plastic case is covered with the tattoo, the functional black cord complimenting the design so well that it almost looks like a fashion statement! The plates are a slate grey colour so also look great next to the pink case - they also look very small.

You only have some three and a half useful inches of straightening plate, not good (or practical) when you have waist length hair. It took forever to straighten my hair fully that first night and I haven't done it since - now these straighteners are used for little touch ups and to straighten/tidy up my growing-out fringe. The plates heat to 210*C; there's no temperature control so I assume this is a standard temperature to make the straighteners one-size-fits-all, it's fine for my normal hair but anyone with particularly thick or fine hair might not be so suited to this heat setting.

It takes a while to heat up to optimum temperature, at least two minutes I'd guesstimate and maybe longer. Once hot they retain the temperature as they should and don't feel harsh on my hair, the casing gets a bit warm on the edges but not uncomfortably so - the lack of an automatic cut out makes me a bit nervous for this reason so I make sure I always remember to unplug them when I've finished. The plates slide smoothly through my hair and I'm always surprised by how well they actually straighten it, as I've mentioned I only tend to use these for pulling the kink out of my fringe but this is due only to the size of them - not because of any issues with the functionality.

My hair stays straight for a good few hours after I've used these straighteners; I use good quality hair products so it's a combination of the two, but the initial straightening leaves my hair so sleek and smooth that the products seem to just help it to look glossy and healthy. The plates almost reach the edges of the casing widthways which prevents a kink at the roots of my hair, I can easily angle the straighteners against my scalp and pull them through my hair at a perfect pace for straightening.

Actually, that's not always true. The two metre cord is a good length, but it doesn't swivel where it meets the body of the straighteners. This is restrictive as it's hard to get comfortable with the cord being so rigid, doing the very back of my hair is an awkward nightmare due to the non-swivelling cord. It's not so much a problem for straightening my fringe, although it's a nuisance having to change hands or physically turn around to do the 'other side'.

The straighteners take a while to cool down enough for putting away - again having no safety cut-out is a worry as although these aren't the hottest straighteners available, a freak positional accident could bring furniture or fabric into contact with the plates and then they become a fire risk. To be completely honest I doubt the plates would ignite a fire in most circumstances, but you still don't want your dressing table charred do you?

I'd recommend these Ionika mini straighteners to certain people; my daughter had some fairly short layers cut into her hair last week and she's been using these instead of her larger GHDs to get her hair straight, they work well to create the choppy look she goes for and help her to keep her style looking good all day. On the box it says they are a unisex product and I'd agree to a point as the small plates would make them ideal for styling a mans hair, although a lot of men I know would be put off by the predominantly pink design!

I paid £15 for mine, but looking online I've found them for £9.99 in Sainsbury's. If you swear by GHDs I'm sure you won't be impressed by these, but for a more casual hair straightener like me they're great.
