Nicky Clarke NSS087 Frizz Control Straightener
Advantages: Low price, quality product, good results.
Purchasing new straighteners wasn't exactly a matter of urgency as I can borrow my daughter's ghd's, but with a holiday coming up and also my daughter going on holiday too, it meant I did need to be buying myself some fairly quickly.
Although I must admit my daughter's ghd straighteners are really good, there is no way I could justify paying that amount of money for straighteners for myself and as I had been quite happy with my cheaper Remington straighteners, I knew it was possible to find decent straighteners at a low price.
I was thinking of taking a look online for straighteners when I got home from work one evening, but a trip to Morrisons after work for some shopping led me to buying some straighteners far sooner than I anticipated. For it was while walking down one of the aisles I spotted these Nicky Clarke Frizz Control Ionic Straighteners priced at just £20. This seemed a great price and so I took a closer look.
I think it was the word 'Ionic' which caught my eye and appealed to me as much as the price did, as I am a big fan of Ionic hairdryers and won't use anything else. I much prefer the smoother look I achieve when using an ionic hairdryer and so the fact these straighteners were ionic too was very appealing.
For those who may not know, ionic technology produces a flow of negative ions which helps to enhance and condition your hair, neutralising natural positive ions, which create electrostatic electricity which in turn causes frizz. Therefore by using an ionic hairdryer or straighteners, this feature helps to combat frizz, leaving your hair smoother and softer.
I am aware that some people have said they cannot tell the difference between a ionic and non-ionic hairdryer, but I certainly can, so therefore I swear by ionic hairdryers and this explains why I was excited to discover these ionic starighteners too.
I thought that as these straighteners are the Nicky Clarke brand, have ionic technology and priced at just £20, these were well worth purchasing and so I bought them.
The black and purple box they came in was very attractive and the straighteners were also pictured on the front. All in all, it looked like I was buying a quality product at a low price.
On removing the straighteners from the box when I got home, I was pleased with the look and feel of them. The straighteners are sleek black with ceramic coated slim purple plates and also a purple lock button to lock the plates together. The ceramic coated plates help you achieve softer, smoother and ultra-straight hair. The ceramic heaters provide fast salon heat-up and constant plate temperatures help you achieve fast results.
After plugging in the straighteners there is an on/off switch on the side which you turn on and the straighteners then quickly heat up to your desired temperature. The power light flashes when you turn on the straighteners and stops flashing when they have heated to the selected tempertaure so you know they are ready to use.
I am pleased to report these straighteners also feature variable heat control, as I do prefer to choose my own tempertaure otherwise I find they can be hotter than I personally prefer for my hair.
You are advised to start off on the minimum setting and gradually increase it as you find the best setting for your hair type, which is the best thing to do if you are using straighteners for the first time, but as I have used them many times I know which temperature works best for me and so I adjusted the temperature to my preferred setting right away.
Basically you are advised to use lower temperatures for fine or shorter hair and higher temperatures for longer or thicker hair and as with all straighteners, you are advised not to use them too frequently in order to avoid damaging your hair. I must admit I use mine most days of the week, but only minimally on most occasions just to smooth out my long hair as it has a natural curl, which I don't mind, but on some days it can look a little frizzy and these straighteners help control this and keep my hair looking smooth.
I also use a conditioner every time I wash my hair and also use deep conditioning treatments and products to help keep my hair looking as smooth, shiny and soft as possible.
There is no protective heat mat or bag provided with these straighteners unfortunately, but as I had kept the bag from my previous straighteners which also doubles up as a protective mat, I use this when using and storing my straighteners.
As there is no protective mat provided to lie your straighterners on when using, you must ensure you always place them on a flat, heat resistant surface. Do not place them on the bed or rugs, carpets etc.
After brushing my hair, I set about using the straighteners the same way I have with any others, taking sections of my hair between the plates and sliding them down the length of my hair. The heat is instantaneous so there is no need to hold the straighteners still on your hair, just slide them down your hair right away. I find the straighteners glide easily and smoothly through my hair with no snagging at all and I am left with perfectly straight hair and achieve the exact results I want when using them.
The straighteners are also fitted with a safety shut off feature and after approximately one hour it will automatically switch itself off. I would personally prefer the safety shut off feature to activate much sooner than this, but I am always very careful and always ensure I turn my straighteners off, sometimes going back to check again just to be sure before leaving the house.
I have two daughters and this has been an issue with them over the years, particularly when straighteners had no safety cut off feature. I still recall coming home from work and was horrified to find my eldest had left her straighteners on all day! Since that day I have been extra vigilant and of course very happy to find these cut off features eventually appearing on straighteners.
I have been using these straighteners for a few weeks now and am perfectly happy with them. For just £20 I achieve smooth, straight hair and they are a good quality product. I am more than happy to recommend them.
Summary: At £20 for a quality product with ionic technology, these are a bargain buy.
