Advantages: erm....they style and straighten your hair?
Disadvantages: they're stupidly expensive, unreliable, DANGEROUS, did I mention expensive?!
In my life I have owned 2 pairs of GHDs, a pair of the classic ones which this review is about, and a pair of those little slim ones (I dont know the correct name for them).
I got my first pair when they became all the rage, and it must have been about 10 years ago now. I paid £120 for them from my local stylist and they were perfect, they were better than any straightener I had ever used before. Unfortunatly they broke just outside the years guaruntee - I contacted GHD themselves and they offered to repair them for a very high price. After this I tried a cheaper straightener but found them to be lacking and just werent as good as GHDs, so I decided to invest in another pair. They were slightly cheaper this time, I think I paid around £95 as I went for the slimmer smaller versions, again however they broke, within the years guarantee this time but I had lost my reciept and I didnt keep the box or anything, I didnt bother contacting GHD this time as I had no proof of purchase. As you can imagine I was very angry at GHD for this, paying that amount for a hair straightener you expect it to last.
In another story my friend owned a pair too, this must have been a few years ago now, and like me she also loved her GHDs. Unfortunatly hers CAUGHT FIRE one morning whilst she was doing her hair!!!! You can imagine how dangerous this can be, what if her hair had gone up in flames? what if she had been spraying hair spray or some other flammable liquid and that had caught? They caught fire where the wire connects to the straighteners where something had obviously come loose or disconnected.
Its safe to say since all this neither of us have ever gone back to owning a pair of GHDs.
Despite all that I do think GHDs are a good straightener, they really do smoothen and sleek your hair, even the most frizzy (like mine) effortlessly, which is probably down to the fact that they can reach such a high heat. The plates feel very smooth on the hair with no pulling or difficulty, and whatever style you create using GHDs tends to stay put and last throughout the day. Now I am a bit older however I just cannot understand or justify the £100 price tag that comes with these straighteners. For the last 5 years I have been using a pair of Remmington straighteners and they have been very reliable (5 years of daily use!), they dont get as hot as GHDs but they style my hair easily and effortlessy, and my hair stays like that for the entire day. The best thing about these straighteners is that they only cost me £29.99!
My flatmate owns a pair of GHDs still, and I know she has had hers a few years now which shows that they can be reliable, but when I occasionally use her GHDs over my Remmington ones I honesty really cannot notice much of a difference between the two - other than the GHDs heat up quicker and get a lot hotter.
So, there may have not been much technical details in this review but I think I have given my experience with GHDs in some detail. Overall I wouldnt recommend them, I think they are rediculously overpriced for a hair straightener - think of all the thinks you could do with £100!!! I have found them to be unreliable and in the case of my friends catching fire during use - just outright dangerous! There are straighteners which are just as good on the market today now that all the other brands seem to have caught up with the technology so dont waste your monies on these. I know a lot of people will disagree and swear by their GHDs, and I did once - but its just a hair styler and not worth the hefty price tag if you ask me!
Summary: very expensive waste of money
