Hi there everyone,
I have had this styler for a while now and would like to do a review on it. I brought this appliance on amazon due to the fact I love to change my hairstyles all the time, and own a vast majority of hair products and appliances but didn't have a waver so thought I would try one out.
I found it quite difficult to use as I had never used one before but once I got the hang of it, it created beautiful medium deep waves.
The barrel is ceramic tourmaline so it has minimal heat damage which is a plus. I personally haven't myself experienced any heat damage from this appliance. It does heat up really quickly which i like because I hate waiting on any kind of hair styler to heat up. I did find the hair waver to be rather bulky in my hand, but then again I have small hands.
The only thing I put in my hair before i use the waver is a heat protectant serum, then I get to styling with my waver. I found that the waves lasted quite long in my hair till the next day without any form of holding or setting spray. The only thing I use after I have finished styling my hair is a shine finishing spray that is not designed for hold but designed to give hair the glossy shine that I love.
I have curly very long hair but I am never quite satisfied with my hair. It is either too curly, wavy or straight and whatever it happens to be that day I am unhappy. This is perhaps a slight exaggeration but somedays it feels like my hair takes up too much of my time. I own crimpers, curling tongs, GHDs, a GHD air hairdryer and yet I seem to pick up no end of random gadgets that claim to do something else to my hair. The latest gadget that I purchased, this Toni & Guy deep barrel hair waver is yet another one that is perhaps destined to pile up in my bottom drawer of my bedside table until my niece comes to visit, and here is why...
I purchased this item, on a whim, for around £35.00 from Amazon back in February or March and I can see from having another look on Amazon that the price is still around this mark, although it is often cheaper, and this item appears to have been released on the 12th of February 2013, which would explain why when I saw it I had not heard of it before and was instantly intrigued. I did not bother to read any reviews on Amazon, as there were none, and so I set about my purchase blindly really, not that I minded as I had this vision of changing my hair, once again, and finally being happy with the results, well, for a few hours at least.
This barrel waver came in a snazzy box which was rectangular in shape with curved ends and a nice lid that was taped down and popped off nicely. I discarded the box as soon as I opened it as I have a large drawer where I keep most of my gadgets for my hair. The packaging was nice and the barrel waver comes already built and with a plug and wire already attached so it is ready to use as soon as it is opened. This was exactly what I expected of course and there is nothing negative to say about the packaging or plugging this product in ready for use.
The product itself is built in a similar way to a pair of straighteners. There is the main body of the product, where you can hold it, a button to lock the two plates together, which is very useful when the plates are hot and I want to turn the barrel waver off, there is two plates both of which are curved and there is a deep curve set in to the middle of one plate and the cut out section built in to the other plate giving two plates that lock together to make a deep curve in my hair and the depth of this is 32mm which is very deep for this type of hair curling product. There is an indentation on the top of this barrel waver for a finger or thumb and this is very handy as it makes it more comfortable to hold. The underneath, in the same place, has grooves which again work well and ensure that I keep my grip when holding this item. There is an on and off switch, which just slides backwards and forwards, and this is simple to use without being too firm to slide. The most important part of this barrel waver, in my opinion, is the dial that controls the temperature. This dial is numbered from 1 to 25 in increments of 2 and this is simple to turn and while the numbers are very small, to fit on the dial, they are also simple for me to see, even without my glasses on. The temperature goes up to 200C and as the dial goes up to 25 I believe that it is roughly 8C per increment but I am not sure on this and I have no way to check this for sure as it was not covered in the booklet and I have since discarded this anyway.
When using this product I just plug it in, with the 3 metre cord being very handy for walking around part of my bedroom and not having to change to a different plug, I then place it on the bed, with the underside of the plates being flat and handy for balancing on my bed without burning anything, and then I turn it on. The switch is simple to turn on and I have found that 19 or 21 works best for my hair. It does not fry my hair and it does not leave me with too much frizz either. The barrel waver heats up very quickly and is ready to use within about one minute. If I have my cats nearby or children running around my house I tend to use the lock feature to keep the plates closed together until the second I am going to pick it up and start to curl my hair. I use sectioning clips and other hair accessories to section the front and back of my hair as well as the top layer and the underneath layer to ensure an even curl throughout my hair. I curl my hair in small sections and I tend to start from the middle at the back and work towards the front. I find this works best for ensuring that I do not miss any sections of my hair and then I work from the middle towards the front on the other side of my hair. Each section of hair takes about 15-20 seconds and I tend to clamp this, starting at the top of my hair, before setting in 2 or 3 waves down my hair in a fairly uniform manner, and I usually count to 15 for each section, while holding the appliance with one hand and applying make-up or painting my toenails with the other hand. The waves are clear in my hair after 15 seconds, whether I use this on temperature 19 or temperature 21. Sometimes I alternate between 17 and 21 through my hair to give some deep curls and some lighter ones that I tousle using a tousle spray. I love how when I am walking around that the 3 metre wire, swivels at the bottom of the barrel waver to ensure that the wire is not pulled unnecessarily or bent out of shape. This is a great feature for me and allows me the freedom to move around my home tidying up, feeding pets or carrying out tasks as needed depending on what room of my home I am in.
With regards to the wave that this puts in to my hair I would say that it is very deep. I use GHD serum before using any heat related item on my hair and I use a curl defining product on my hair also when using this item or curling tongs. My hair does not gain frizz when using this, providing I don't turn it above temperature number 21 on the dial, and there are no extra flyaway hairs after using this than I normally experience so that is great also. The curls are deep and I can run my hands through the curls and spray them with a sea salt or tousle spray to give it that tousled look that appears to be more natural to me. The curls work very well for me and they stay in my hair throughout the day, with the help of some hairspray.
Overall I would say that this is worthy of a 4 out of 5 stars. I do need to use quite a lot of product on my hair to get it from straight to curly with deep curls but that is to be expected with thick coarse hair such as mine. I like the variable dial, the swivel cord and the length of the cord. The unit itself is a little heavy, perhaps weighing almost the 1.5kg that my GHD air hairdryer weighs and because of how you hold this item it can feel a little heavy on the wrist. It works very well at curling my hair, which is the purpose of this, but it is very simple to overheat my hair, causing frizz, or underheat my hair causing limp curls that do not last even a couple of hours, particularly in warm weather. I feel it is a little heavy and I tend to use a fairly small amount of hair at a time to ensure that I get perfect neat curls throughout my hair, even if I am going to create a tousled look, and as such this means that I can use this item on my hair about 20-25 times each time I want to use this on my hair which adds up to quite a bit of time spent just on this. The heat generated is not too pleasant either, particularly when the weather is this hot, and I just don't notice the heat from my GHD Air or my GHD straighteners anywhere near as much, despite those both being a fraction hotter to use than this barrel waver.
The model number for this item is TGIR1922 and it may also have UK on the end when ordering in the United Kingdom although this part of the model number is irrelevant to the model itself.
I have long and very hard to curl hair so I am always in search of some new styler that would give me my dream waves and tony and guy jumbo waver is the answer to all my prayers.
This waver is really huge and deep barrelled, this ensures deep luxurious and uniform waves. All I do is section my hair and do one lock of hair at the time.So I start from the top and press the two tongs together and hold for some seconds then move a bit down and press again and repeat the process for all the hair. The result this styler gives me is very deep and luxurious waves.I have previously tried a similar waver from another brand but the barrel on that one was not deep like this and it just left really defined crimps on my hair,so I was looking for a deep barrel styler and tony and guy jumbo waver is perfect as it leave proper big waves. Also for long hair this is a dream come true as all the hair gets curled evenly.
Also there is a choice of heat settings. So I have more control over my styling and don't have to worry about frying my hair. The plates are really smooth and gives really shiny results.
All in all a really good waver perfect for my long hair.
