Arran Aromatics Essential Lavender Hand Wash
Advantages: A lovely hand wash which is ideal for gifts and special times.
Disadvantages: Too expensive for everyday use.
I discovered Arran Aromatics Lavender Hand Wash in a rather lovely place. If I say it came along at exactly the right moment I am not exaggerating as I was driving up to the Outer Hebrides from Essex, which is a journey of 18 hours or so. Added to this it was wintertime and there was snow and ice on the roads, so I stopped off at Tyndrum, which is a small village north of Loch Lomond for a comfort break. This stopping place has the rather attractive name - "The Green Welly Stop" and it always has the best cared for toilets in the vicinity. On this occasion, when washing my hands, I was treated to the Arran Aromatics Lavender Hand Wash which was supplied free to use over the wash basins. As there is a lovely gift shop on the premises I guess the idea is to allow customers to sample the hand wash, and hopefully then to make a purchase. As I had a ferry to catch I didn't have time to do that, but I remember thinking how lovely my hands felt and the fragrance of lavender was so relaxing, which did help on the long drive ahead.
On returning from that holiday I decided to look into purchasing some of the hand wash for home. You have several choices of suppliers ranging from their own website at www.arranaromatics.com, to Amazon and many other department stores and online companies who also stock this make.
One of my passions is to try and support companies who are based in rural areas, and as I spend a lot of time in Scotland you will always find items made by small producers from places I love. Arran Aromatics are, as you would expect, based on the Isle of Arran off the west coast of Scotland. Formed in 1988 by Iain and Janet Russell and their sons Andrew and Duncan, the family business has grown from a small scale operation to a business now recognised globally. Their ethics are simple- to produce toiletries which are as natural as possible with respect for the environment.
The lavender hand wash is one of their best selling products, and 250ml retails for £8. I must admit that for me to purchase a hand wash of this expense is not something I do every week. I do have several luxury hand washes that I keep for certain occasions - these tend to be the more luxurious products, and here I would also include products by the French manufacturer L'Occitane in this collection. For all other occasions I purchase hand washes from the Pound Shop- these are excellent for everyday use and are inexpensive and practical.
So for special occasions the Arran Aromatics Lavender Hand Wash is now on my purchase list. It fulfilled such a need on that long journey that I thought about all the times I could make use of it on those drives, and especially when using public conveniences on road trips where sometimes the facilities provided are less than adequate. What I do now is I actually take it with me in the car, and pop it into my handbag if I know the washroom I am about to visit isn't particularly good. You would be amazed how wonderful it feels to freshen up with a luxury hand-wash on a long car journey! I even have the matching hand lotion which I apply when I return to the car. You could even decant this into a small plastic container to make it easier to take away with you, but it certainly aids freshness, and the relaxing scent of the lavender liquid really helps calm nerves when miles of road stretch out in front of you!
I love using this hand wash before doing my nails as it is really moisturising leaving hands so soft and lightly scented.
Although this product is called lavender it also contains tea tree oil, and the combination of the two gives it antibacterial qualities which are really important if you are travelling. The fragrance of the product does not reflect the presence of the tea tree oil which is masked by the lavender, but it does add to the germ protection of the product overall.
One of the really important attributes this product has is in its ability to lather up really well, so a little goes a long way. I find that a bottle lasts a long time even with multiple daily uses.
I think if you are afraid of lavender fearing it will be overpowering this product is not like that at all. The fragrance is really a musky lavender, and my husband is more than happy to use the product as well so it is not just for girls!
The bottle is also really attractive, and you can purchase gifts sets which include both the hand wash and the lotion which make really lovely presents.
I really like this hand wash, too expensive for daily use but a lovely treat now and again.
Summary: Well worth buying and ideal for a gift.
