The Body Shop Hemp Intensive Hand Butter
Advantages: moisturises, long lasting results, a little goes a long way
Disadvantages: the smell
It's that time of year again where I dread standing on the platform or at the bus stop waiting for a delayed bus or train. My hands get so cold even with gloves and the cold makes them extremely dry, meaning I sometimes suffer from cracked skin which isn't a nice sight not to mention sore. I have used lots of different hand creams in the past, some have been better than others but I am still looking for a really good hand cream that will help my dry skin and keep them hydrated. I recently purchased some items from The Body Shop website and decided to browse their range of hand care products. I saw 2 products which sounded and looked really good and as I could get 50% off of the products I decided to purchase both.

The product I am reviewing is the Hemp Intensive Hand Butter. The hand butter is a heavy-duty hydrating treatment for hands that restores moisture for up to 24 hours. The butter is dermatologically tested for very dry skin and contains hemp seed oil. This product has a lovely buttery texture and is suitable for very dry skin. Although my skin isn't very, very dry it is still dry and I wanted something good and intensive that was going to help my hands and stop them from looking so dry and feeling tight. Hemp Oil is regularly used in hand and body lotions and is becoming more popular due to research showing that hemp oil contains high amounts of Omega-3 and gamma-linolenic acid oils, known as Essential Fatty Acids. Essential Fatty Acids help to prevent moisture loss in the skin and also plays a role in the skin ageing process. The butter comes in a round tub which is white in colour but the labels on the tub are a light green colour. On the top of the screw lid it states what the product is and it also states that the product is suitable for very dry skin. On the bottom of the tub is a round sticker and if you open this you will find information on how to use the product and a list of ingredients. I purchased this product for intended use at night just before I go to bed so the butter could work whilst I was sleeping. I actually purchased a small tube of the Hemp Hand Protector to pop in my bag for use during the day.

This can be purchased from The Body Shop website or from their high street stores. The hand butter comes in one size which is 100ml and this will cost you £11.00. This is the most I have spent on a hand product so I was hoping that this was going to work well. You can also purchase other products in the Hemp range which includes:
* Body Butter
* Face Protector
* Foot Protector
* Lip Protector
* Moisturising Wash
* Hand Oil Treatment
* Moisturising Hand Wash
Using the Product

I unscrewed the lid to the tub and looked at the product and smelt it. The butter looked quite thick and had a slightly glossy/shiny look to it. The butter looked as though it would be smooth and easy to apply to my hands. The butter did have a very distinctive smell to it which reminds me of the smell of a type of plant which is where I believe Hemp Oil comes from so this would probably explain why it smells like this. Although I didn't find the smell of the butter really nice it wasn't unpleasant either. I was planning on using the butter with some moisture gloves whilst in bed but I realised I didn't actually have any moisture gloves so decided I would have to go without for now. I did all of my usual things before going to bed and then got ready to apply the product. I unscrewed the lid to reveal the butter and used my fingertips to scoop a small amount out. I didn't want to use too much as I didn't want lots of the product left on my hands, especially as I didn't have moisture gloves. I rubbed the butter all over my hands ensuring I rubbed the butter in between my fingers and around the nails where I sometimes get dry, sore skin. The butter felt cold but warmed up as I rubbed it into my hands. The butter was very silky and soft and felt nice as it felt like it was instantly moisturising my hands. As I rubbed the butter into my hands I could smell the plant like smell of the product. Although I wasn't too keen on the smell I'm sure it's something that I would get used to after using the product for a few times. After rubbing the butter into my hands I could still smell the product on my hands. Although there was no trace of the butter on my hands there was still a slight residue, how-ever this wasn't really greasy. I got into bed and would assess the results in the morning.

The following morning after waking up the first thing I did was smell my hands. I could still smell the butter on my hands but the smell wasn't as strong and had calmed down a bit during the night. My hands felt really smooth and soft and they looked in much better condition and looked less dry than they had done before I had applied the butter the previous night. I wouldn't be applying the butter until the evening before going to bed again and I decided I would see how long the moisture lasted through my working day. Obviously through my working day I had to wash my hands a few fair times with soap and my hands stayed reasonably moisturised throughout these times. The scent was no longer on my hands which wasn't such a bad thing. Although I had washed my hands a fair amount of time and also done other jobs during the day my hands didn't feel as dry or tight as they would have felt if I hadn't applied any of the hand butter the previous evening. The butter definitely kept my hands moisturised and feeling soft for the majority of the day, without applying anything else to them.

Since I have been using the hand butter my hands look and feel a lot less dry than they did before. My hands don't feel tight either, especially after washing them throughout the day. Although I don't particularly like the smell of this product it is something I will probably get used to and is something I can't put up with as the smell seems to calm down during the night as the butter gets to work on my hands. Although I wouldn't use the butter during the day it's a fantastic product to use just before you go to bed and if you wear moisture gloves I think the results of the product would be even better. There have been a few greasy marks which have appeared on my bed sheets from where this has been applied to my hands before going to bed, how-ever this washes out easily and doesn't leave greasy stains on the sheets. In terms of value I don't think the product is badly priced as you don't need to use a lot of the butter as a little goes a long way. If I use the butter every night as I have been I would expect the tub I purchased to last me well over 1 month, if not a lot longer. I would definitely buy this product again as its brilliant and I have been really impressed with the results. I am going to take 1 star of the product because I don't find the smell too pleasant and I have smelt better hand products before, but apart from this it's a fantastic product and one that I highly recommend to others.
