Advantages: Gorgeous scent, captures the aroma of Chocolate Orange, not drying
Disadvantages: Not available in all supermarkets
I love Terry's Chocolate Orange so as soon as I discovered that Carex had brought out a new range of fun fragranced hand washes, including a Chocolate Orange flavour, I knew I had to give it a try!
Tracking this variety down proved a little difficult initially. This was not stocked in my local (large) Morrisons store or in Wilkinson's where I tend to buy household items such as this. Thanks to a kind tip-off from a fellow Dooyooer (thanks to the redrobin) I finally managed to buy some in a large Tesco store.
I paid the full RRP of £1.80 for a 250ml pump action bottle, although a quick look at mysupermarket.co.uk reveals that this variety is currently half-price at Tesco. I was quite happy to pay the full price but I'm tempted to stock up on a few bottles now that I've discovered it's half price.
The hand wash is presented in the familiar Carex style with an easy to operate pump action helping to dispense the liquid soap inside in a steady flow. One pump is a pretty accurate amount needed for handwashing, helping to minimise waste. I do like this format of hand wash as the bottle is slim enough to fit on the side of the small sink in my downstairs toilet, conveniently to hand. It's not entirely mess-free, despite the pump format, as my children do tend to get a bit carried away and leave a bit of an orange trail over the shelf or the sink, but in general this dispenser is pretty useful and well designed. The transparent plastic also makes it easy to keep track of how full or empty the bottle may be. As far as I know, this variety isn't available in a refill as yet but I would certainly consider buying refills if they were readily available.
The real beauty of this variety of Carex is what is inside the bottle or, specifically, the fragrance of the contents. Just as I'd hoped, this hand wash smells exactly like the genuine article, with the chocolate and orange oil fragrances being perfectly well balanced. There is just no mistaking the distinctive aroma of Terry's Chocolate Orange as soon as this touches my hands. It lathers up nicely, without an excessive amount of froth or bubbles, and leaves behind the most gorgeous and 'feel good' fragrance that I've ever found from a hand wash before. Words honestly can't describe how accurate or how lovely this scent is and just how warm and relaxed sniffing my clean hands makes me feel! I'm delighted to confirm that the scent lingers for a respectable length of time too, giving me that boost of fragrance for a good hour or so after washing.
I do suffer with dry and sensitive skin and occasionally experiencing dry patches and sometimes some soreness and irritation between my fingers. Clearly some hand washes and other products can irritate my skin but I'm pleased to advise that I haven't had any adverse reaction to this Carex product, despite finding other varieties a little too drying for my skin type. This hand wash simply needs my hands feeling smooth and clean with, of course, that distinctive fragrance. I'd be devastated if I suffered a reaction to this hand wash as I love it so much!
Carex do claim that this hand wash (along with most varieties from their range) can kill 99.9% of bacteria. It's very difficult to verify these kinds of claims on a day to day basis but I can confirm that this hand wash certainly makes me and the kids want to wash hands more frequently, which has to be a good thing in the battle against germs, viruses and bacteria. It may also be entirely coincidental but, since using this variety, my youngest son has suffered with a nasty virus and my middle son has also had a cough and cold that he just can't shift but I've managed to avoid both. I can't attribute this to the Carex but I'm confident that it does help, simply by washing my hands more often than I might otherwise do. I actually look forward to changing nappies as I've got another great reason to wash my hands again!
I've been a fan of Carex hand washes for years but I've never come across a hand wash that I love as much as this one. I would highly recommend this to anybody who loves the smell of Terry's Chocolate Orange, especially at the current promotional price. The only drawback is that it might lead to excessive consumption of the real thing I actually went out and bought a real Chocolate Orange within days of switching to this hand wash! Dieters beware...
