Advantages: Fresh clean smell and moisturising qualities .
Disadvantages: It may be a little expensive for some .
Cussons Carex comes in an attractive square shaped plastic see through bottle. The wash inside is a pastel pink. When I picked the bottle up from the shelf in Boots, it felt comfortable in my hand. It is shaped at the sides for easy handling, and had a pretty purple pearlised push down dispenser to the top. To the front of the bottle it has a blue soap bubble image with Cussons Carex written within, alongside the words Hygienically clean. There is a further pink soap bubble with the statement Collagen boost-Moisturising handwash! And the claim that it contains Collagen "Essential for skins health". The bottle contains 250 mls and cost £1.49.
Now I was intrigued to find out a little more about Collagen. Is it indeed "Essential for skins health"? as they so claim, I wonder...
Collagen makes up 75% of skin tissue but we lose 1 and a half % of it each year, hence the ageing process that none of us can escape. Collagen is responsible for the strength of skin and it's elasticity, and its gradual decline lead to wrinkles that go hand in hand with aging. We can however give back to the skin, the properties that are lacking, by replacing the Collagen to help restore somewhat, the appearance of the skin. Collagen's can be sourced from equine, bovine, or porcine, and even human sources and are sometimes used in combination with silicone and other substances-
So in reply to the statement Cussons Carex with Collagen is essential for skins health"...Yes it is, to a degree.
On opening the Carex you need to twist the dispenser to unlock, and the nozzle will extend itself to full height for application, which I found I could do with ease. It is well made and not at all fiddly. The bottle itself is slim and very sturdy and will not take up too much room when placed on the sink. It measures six inches high when fully opened and 1 and a half inches deep. The width is just under four inches wide. I like the slimness of this bottle, some containers are much too bulky to actually sit on the sink without getting in the way. So I shall give it 10/10 for the design of the bottle.
I took the dispenser fully out of the bottle to get a real impression of the scent And it is actually quite pleasant. It smells very fresh and slightly clinical. A smell of lemons and chamomile as far as I could detect. This product contains hexyl cinnamal. This is is an additive used in perfume and cosmetics and it is the essential oil of chamomile. Hexyl cinnamal is a class B allergen. It is also an irritant in concentrations higher than recommended. Though I should imagine the amount in this hand wash would be well within the safety guidelines. So it has a nice fresh clean smell about it without being flowery or overpowering. So I shall give it 9/10 for scent.
As I pump the Carex onto my hands, a measured amount is dispensed. I scoop some water to blend it in and the first thing I notice is that the consistency of the Carex is fairly thick and stays upon the hand without running. The feel of it upon my skin is that of silkiness and a definite moisturising feel. The lather is soaping quite well and is just enough for the job. I massage it in and leave on my skin for for about a minute, giving time for the handwash to work into my skin well. On completion of washing and rinsing my hands, then drying, they are feeling really moisturised as if I had just applied hand cream, and they are also feeling really soft and clean. My hands have now been left with a lovely fresh smell. So I already like the feel of the product and I am quite impressed with the softening effect on my hands, so I shall give it 9/10 for feel.
I think the advantage that liquid soap has over the more old fashioned product of tablet soap, is that of hygiene. Obviously each application is fresh and no ones hands will have touched it before. Also liquid soap is non messy, as opposed to the tablet form which leaves hard caked soap upon the sink which I find quite hard to clean off. Tablet soap also loses it's scent quite quickly, whereas liquid soap retains it's perfume inside the bottle. So all in all liquid soap scores all round for me.
Long term benefits: Well obviously I cannot say as yet, as you would need to use this product for some while before giving that opinion. What I will do is up-date this review after using up this bottle, to add my opinion on any benefits which I may notice. I think the very fact that on the first appliction I noticed a softness and moisturising feel, that Collagen Boost will add conditioning properties to my skin. Apart from that; only time will tell.
Carex with Collagen claims to be a Unique antibacterial formulation, to maintain skins natural PH balance, to help prevent dry skin, to be Dermatologically tested, and to counter and freshen common food odours! Cussons have actually tested this product for effect on Onions and Citrus odours. Carex claims to leave your hands 'hygienically soft and clean'.
As with most products this comes with a warning to Avoid contact with eyes!!-In case of contact rinse well with cold water. And it also warns to avoid contact with fabrics. I can only presume because of staining. For your information, all ingredients contained in the Carex are listed on the back of the container. Once opened the the use by date of Collagen Boost is 18 months. I will just mention that after I had washed and rinsed my hands I put my finger to my mouth and there was a very strong sharp taste left from the Handwash which I immediately rinsed out. So be careful not to do that.
The Cussons Company.
The Cussons Company was formed in the early 1900's, and in 1920 Alexander Cussons set up a soap factory in Kersal Vale, Salford where production still continues to this day. Cussons is now a multinational company, with sales in many Commonwealth countries, inc: UK, Thailand and the Middle East.
I actually did have to search a little for this product. But I eventually did find it in Boots. I presume you could find it at any large supermarket chain or chemist. This product comes in a 250ml container and cost me £1.49 ( Prices may vary from store to store.)
My Final Thoughts.
I liked this product very much. I like the convenience and hygienic aspect of liquid handwash. The smell of the Carex was pleasant and fresh. The bottle was attractive and slim, and easy to grip, and the feel on my skin, and after washing, was very moisturising. The price was fine. It was what I would expect to pay for a quality product. All in all I was very happy with this purchase, and would definitely buy it again. So I shall be recommending Carex Collagen Handwash with confidence.
