Having three children, I've grown accustomed to being prepared for any eventuality whilst out and about. Although all three of my boys are long past the nappy stage, I still have what is known as 'the changing bag' to hand when we go out as a family - loaded with emergency snacks, wipes and a small bottle of anti-bacterial hand gel.
I first purchased this Carex Protect & Plus hand gel when my youngest son was still in nappies. I found this handy 50ml sized bottle to be the perfect size to slip in the bag, ready to hand following nappy changes in public places - particularly where this is not always easy access to soap and running water. The small bottle is see through so it is easy to keep track of supplies. I find that the flip top lid dispenses the runny gel easily and it is easy to squeeze out exactly the right amount. After application, the gel feels cooling against my palm but soon dries completely with no tackiness or residue.
The hand gel still has a valuable role to play in our family, having a child who has a tendency to travel sickness. This is now well managed with prescription medication but I always prefer the reassurance of having this gel to hand - just in case of emergencies. Unfortunately, I have had cause to use this on a number of occasions following travel sickness and can confirm that the gel does combat the unpleasant smell of vomit from hands. I'm also optimistic that this gel fulfils its promise of killing '99.9% of bacteria in seconds' although there is no real way to test this as an average consumer!
The only negative aspect of this gel is the very over-powering scent of alcohol which is difficult to avoid. The alcohol content does mean that the gel can sting if there are any areas of broken skin. I try to avoid using this gel when my hands are particularly dry as this does sting like crazy!
I find this gel is a really useful standby product - offering reassurance when members of the family have colds and bugs, with the aim of reducing the spread of infection to other family members. It also comes in handy when using public toilets and after eating meals. I would recommend this item for any parent to young children when out and about. This is reasonably priced at £1.99 per small bottle but occasionally available for half price from supermarkets and chemists.
I like to make sure that I always have some liquid soap in our home and I prefer to use this instead of bars as I find it so much more hygienic. The one we are all using at the moment is CArex Protect Plus hand wash. I paid two pounds forty nine for this plastic bottle with a very useful pump dispenser on the top. It lathers up very well and rinses off nicely without leaving any sticky residue behind. this liquid soap is designed to protect your hands for up to two hours after using, from nasty germs and bacteria. It smells really pleasant and has a delicate and light fragrance. It is suitable for use by the whole family and my little girl is able to wash er hands herself with this soap. One bottle seems to be lasting for ages as I hardly need to use more than a very tiny little amount. It creates a lovely creamy lather and it leaves my hands feeling nice and soft. It also doesn't seem to dry out the skin, which is always an added bonus. On the whole, I cannot say anything negative about this hand soap and I really recommend it.
When I saw that carex were bringing out a protect plus range I got very excited (oh the joys of being an OCD sufferer!). The protect plus range was supposed to help protect you from bacteria for up to two hours after application. I thought that was a fantastic idea as it is a concern of mine that ten minutes after washing my hands they could be swimming in bacteria again. My condition used to leave me scrubbing my hands every ten minutes but I gradually managed to cut this down and I am now in a position where I think that I only wash my hands as much as the average person would do. However sometimes refraining from washing my hands is difficult for me and my anxiety levels will increase. Therefore when I first heard about this brand I was rather excited because it would leave me feeling a bit calmer about the germs floating about here there and everywhere.
The range from carex includes a handwash and a hand gel. Initially I bought the hand gel as it was on offer for around half of the recommended retail price in superdrug making it around a pound. My mum then bought the handwash from Tesco where she found it on a half price offer and she paid around £1.20 for 250ml because this range does seem to retail at a slightly higher price than the regular carex range.
The carex soap comes in a nice bottle which is square in shape but it is curved and the two edges dip in slightly making it easy to hold. The bottle itself is a crystal clear plastic and it has a frosted clear pump that is released by a simple twist. I really like the branding of the protect plus and it has a sort of rainbow metallic effect and it really catches your eye on the supermarket shelf.
You use the soap just as you would any other handwash. You simply push the pump down which is easy to do and you will receive a good amount of handwash. If the pump is fully pressed then you end up with a blob of soap around the size of a 50p piece. I always find that I really don't need this much so I give the pump a quick press and have a blob about the same size as a 5p piece.
The soap is bright white in colour and is quite thick. It has a fresh and clean aroma and it is easy to lather up. A piece of soap this size cleans my hands and wrists with ease and I personally like to make sure I get all of the skin under my nails and in between each of my fingers too. When it comes to rinsing the soap off it glides from my skin with ease and I am left with clean smelling hands.
After drying my hands I am always pleased with how soft my skin feels. I do suffer with dry skin especially on my hands but after using this I always notice that my skin feels really soft and supple. When using this I find that my hands remain much more moisturised throughout the day and on the whole my skin just feels healthier.
So as for the claims that the soap protects for up to two hours after use I cannot answer the claim really. I do notice that my hands smell clean and look clean but as I personally have no way of telling how many germs I have on my hands. However I have not experienced any coughs or colds since using this.
I find this soap really good. Although it is a little more expensive than the rest of the carex range it is really caring and it leaves my hands feeling soft and clean. I think that the peace of mind given regarding the extra protection is more than worth the price. Recommended.
