      Crabtree & Evelyn Gardeners Hand Recovery
      100g (3.5 oz) Approx £10 50g Price (April 2013)

      == My Story ==

      My hands have taken quite a beating over time. I grew up on the edge of my grandparents' dairy farm, then spent years waitressing my way through university, undertook office work and am now training in a surgical field. For years my leisure time was spent doing DIY and gardening. In summary - my hands needed to be found by Gardeners Hand Recovery!

      I have been using Crabtree & Evelyn's Hand Recovery for more than a decade, albeit very intermittently. I first tried it as a free sample, and was blown away by the immediate difference it made to the appearance and texture of my hands.

      == The Product ==

      The Crabtree & Evelyn's website explains that the Hand Recovery product is a "shea butter-rich treatment which exfoliates, moisturises and conditions to instantly restore softness and suppleness".

      This moisturising hand scrub is packaged in a cream coloured tube with a black flip cap. It came in a now long-gone matching cardboard box. The labelling is simple, with the company's recognisable logo on the front, and clear instructions written in English and French on the back. The ingredients are not listed.

      On opening the cap the aroma of the Hand Recovery is immediately evident. In my opinion the fragrance is of "male floral undertones", ie it's not at all sweet, more like herbs and spices. The product is supposed to be scented with fresh green clover, lavender, sage rosemary and thyme. It's a smell that I like, and one which reminds me that I should be spending more time in my garden!

      == In Use ==

      For a change, the directions are important and if not followed, the product doesn't work half as well.

      The directions:
      Shake well before use.
      DO NOT pre-moisten hands.
      Apply a small quantity to dry hands.
      Using a "hand washing" motion, gently massage into your hands, front and back, for 15 to 20 seconds.
      Rinse lightly with warm water (no soap) and pat dry.

      The amount of product I use each time is a little more than the size of a 10 pence coin when placed in the palm of my hand. The consistency is similar to a "grainy" toothpaste, although over time it becomes much thinner. In use the product has two sensations; a smooth mositurising component and a gritty one.

      The gentle hand washing motion rubs the moisturiser into the skin, while the grains exfoliate. After 10 seconds of using the continuous hand washing motion, the granular component is much more evident, and in my experience, it seems as though a very thin layer of my skin is removed and mixed in with the grains. All that is left after approximately 15-20 seconds is a very gritty product and it is here that the fine line between pleasure and pain starts is breached.

      However, all is well once more when my hands are rinsed in tepid to warm water and I've patted them dry.

      == In summary ==

      To be honest, I've never really been a hand cream kind of a girl. This means that it's difficult to compare this hand recovery product with others out there. What I can do is wholeheartedly declare that my hands are in much better condition on the days that I use this product. I definitely agree with the company's claim that Hand Recovery promises quick results and noticeably softer, smoother hands. It's a great combined exfoliating moisturiser and conditioner.

      This moderately expensive product is a very effective hand treatment that lasts a long time. Highly recommended.
