Cussons Imperial Leather Moisture Hand Wash
Advantages: Moisturises well
Disadvantages: The scent
Imperial Leather Moisture Hand Wash is part of a range of 5 different hand washes which are available in a 300ml size, from most major supermarkets, and health & beauty stores like Boots and Superdrug.
Why I Bought It
I'm allergic to soap, but as long as I avoid any plain antibacterial varieties I'm usually ok with hand washes, so this is what I tend to buy. When it comes to choosing a hand wash I'm really not fussy as I've never found any that claim extra benefits to actually deliver on their promises, so I tend to just go for whatever's on offer. When looking for a hand wash on my last trip to Tesco, there was a half price offer across the Imperial Leather range, so I picked up 2 different coloured bottles of the stuff and off I went.
The hand wash comes in a white plastic bottle with a pump-action dispenser. Before using it for the first time, the top needs to be twisted until it pops up, and then you'll need to press it a few times to get the product flowing. The shape of the bottle seems to have been designed ergonomically to work with the shape of your hands, having a chunk out of each side where your fingers and thumb would rest when you pick it up. This is a nice idea, but it does seem kind of pointless given that it has a pump-action dispenser so that you don't have to pick it up. Though I suppose it does give it a distinctive look. The top of the dispenser is large enough so that you can use it easily, even with wet hands, and the action of the dispenser is smooth and efficient.
The front of the bottle has a pink swirly design on which the Imperial Leather logo sits, along with the name of the product and the word 'NEW' prominently placed at the top. The back of the bottle has a little more information about the product, ingredients and contact information.
This hand wash contains 'a blend of Jojoba Oil and Vitamin E, known to moisturise dry skin, combined with a delicate fragrance and rich creamy lather to gently cleanse your hands', and it claims to leave your hands feeling moisturised.
Suitability and Warnings
This product is dermatologically tested, has a skin friendly pH, and is 100% soap free, so it should be suitable for sensitive skins.
It is stated on the Imperial Leather website that they do not test their final products on animals, which to me instantly screams, "but the ingredients are tested on animals", so whether or not these products are suitable for people with strong views on the subject of animal testing is debateable.
As with most similar products, there is a warning on the bottle to rinse well with water if the product gets in your eyes.
There are no directions on the bottle (which frankly is quite refreshing, as it does seem rather patronising that most companies think we need to be told how to wash our hands!), so it's just a case of wash and go.
The hand wash is a silky, creamy white liquid with a slight pearlescence to it. It's very runny compared to many hand washes I've used, but still not so runny that it would slip through your fingers before you got a chance to use it. When water is added, a smooth, soft lather is created, which feels really nice on the skin, and it does feel as though it's moisturising my hands. One press of the dispenser gives you just the right amount to wash your hands, and it does feel like they're getting a good thorough clean. The only problem I have when using this product is the scent. It's described on the bottle as having a delicate fragrance, but I find it quite overpowering. It's a very strong, perfumey, floral scent, of the kind which gets right in the back of your throat, and I really don't like it at all.
I was quite impressed with the moisturising effect this had on my hands. As I mentioned before, I've never found any other hand washes to live up to their claims of any extra benefits they're supposed to give you, but this one really does make a difference. My hands feel very soft and smooth immediately after use, and the moisturised feeling lasts a good few hours. My hands also feel very clean and fresh, but that awful scent lingers on my skin for ages and after a while it starts to give me a headache.
Overall I was quite pleased with this product. It lived up to it's claims and kept my hands feeling clean, fresh and moisturised. However, I cannot say I would buy this again, as the scent was just too much for me.
Summary: A very good handwash if you can put up with the overpowering scent
