Not sure this is quite worth the price tag of £14

I was given a tube of L'Occitane Rose 4 Reines Velvet Hand Cream as part of a gift with a couple of other hand creams from the range some months ago.

I have never used anything from the L'Occitane range prior to this and had only heard about it from friends who'd used it and had said it was a pretty decent range of products. I'm not generally a fan of other brands of hand cream having used the same hand and body lotion since childhood and having been quite happy with it. However in this case I was quite curious to try out this hand cream which at the time of writing retails at £14 for a 75ml tube.

According to L'Occitane this hand cream is enriched in shea butter and vitamin E and is supposed to help nourish, protect and repair hands from daily wear and tear. The fragrance is derived from Bulgarianm Moroccan, Grasse and Turkish roses.

The hand cream itself is presented in a pale pink tube with a practical twisty lid to allow the cream to be dispensed. The tube stands upright and is practically designed in that the lid rests at the bottom. The tube itself was presented in an attractive box which would actually make this product a good standalone gift by itself!

Unfortunately I disposed of the outer packaging months ago which means I had to go looking for the ingredients for the hand cream online. Don't worry I won't bore you with those just yet, I'll mention them at the end of the review so you can skip if you choose to.

This hand cream is available in a standard 75ml tube or a travel size of 30ml.

There are several good points about this rose scented hand cream. One of them is that a little goes a long way. You only need to squeeze out the cream in pea size quantities to get a decent coverage for both hands. Any more than that and you get more than required generally and when I've accidentally done this, I've had to spread the cream over my wrists to absorb the excess. The second good point is that when rubbing the cream into your hands there is a very luxurious velvety feel (hence the name "velvet hand cream, I imagine) and the cream absorbs into your skin very easily. Whilst actually applying the cream it's a very pleasant feeling of applying something very lavish to your skin.

There is a very obvious scent of roses when using the cream and if you're not overly keen on roses you may find this a bit over-powering and the scent does last quite some time after application.

The only negative point for me about this hand cream and this could sadly be where it falls down is that I don't feel its effects as a hand cream are very long lasting. Not long after applying my hands end up feeling rather dry and this is often within less than 10 minutes. So unfortunately this isn't a cream that I use very often as I prefer hand creams that leave your hands feeling moisturised for at least a couple of hours after applying.

Due to its short lived moisturising quality I don't feel comfortable giving L'Occitane Rose 4 Reines Velvet Hand Cream any more than 3 out of 5 stars. For those not keen on long-lasting scents with their hand cream they might not find this suitable as the scent lingers on long after your hands feel dry again! You might find that this is a suitable gift for a more mature person who appreciates fairly strong floral scented products.

        Floral Hand Cream

Rose 4 Reins Velvet Hand cream

It's coming to that time of year again when using hand cream is a must for me. The winds are drying to my skin, but it's not yet cold enough to wear gloves. Using a good quality product is essential, otherwise why bother? Therefore I always turn to L'occitane products as in my opinion they are the best.

L'occitane has a whole range of hand creams - from ultra-hydrating to light and cooling. The product I am using, and the purpose of this review at the moment, sits nicely between the two ends of spectrum and is perfect for this time of year.

As you would expect Rose 4 (quatre as its French) Reins, is floral scented. It's a vibrant mixture of four different species - Grasse, Moroccan, Bulgarian and Turkish Roses. These are all widely considered to be the best available.

        The Product

The tube I own, was gifted to me for my birthday by my sister. This is a travel sized at only 10ml, and comes in the style of an artist's paint tube. The full sized version is a much more economical 75ml, and comes in a rather luxurious, be it plastic, tube. The dusky rose and gold packaging looks like it comes from a premium range, as indeed it does as you can tell from its £14.00 price tag. This can be purchased from other retailers for a much more respectable price though if you shop around.

Dispensing the product is easily done, as this is neither gloopy nor watery. Once this is squeezed upon the hand, the product will begin to melt into the skin more or less instantly, leaving no residue or stickiness behind. After application I am able to grasp things with ease, and complete my day to day chores without having to wait a while to absorb. My skin is left feeling silky smooth, velvety soft, and nicely moisturised.

The fragrance lingers for a long time, so if you dislike highly scented products or rose fragrance this hand cream is most definitely not for you. If however, you love rose or floral scents, I can most highly recommend this as being perfect for you own personal use or even as a gift. The rose scent may lend itself more to being old ladies favourite, but at forty something myself, it's not that old fashioned and I love it too.

I find I am using this hand cream two or three times a day at the moment, but as the seasons change and I find I need to apply more often, I will change to another more moisturising L'occitane hand cream.

        My Recommendation

I highly recommend this product as being perfect for the spring and autmn months, due to the added shea butter (it's not intensive enough for winter use); but only if you love rose scents.
