I am a huge fan of Neal's Yard products. They can be very expensive, however, due to the almost entirely organic and natural ingredients in the whole range of products, and the fact that they are all so lovely to use, I am prepared to pay that little bit extra. One of my favourites at the moment is Neal's Yard Remedies Citrus Hand Softener. This is pure luxury in a little 50g glass jar. I simply love it.
It isn't cheap at £14 but it works like magic and it soothes, hydrates, nourishes, revitalises and rejuvenates my hands all at the same time. What more can you ask for? I use this at least once every day. The jar is small but I tend not to take it out of the house with me to work, preferring instead to use it either after work or before I go out, especially on cold winter mornings.
Among its massive list of organic ingredients, include coconut oil, Starflower seed oil, beeswax, shea butter, Aloe Vera, avocado, blackcurrant seed and the oils of various citrus fruits, including grapefruit, orange and lemon. Oh my goodness, are you getting the picture yet. This stuff is just jam-packed with wonderful goodness which I am more than happy to slather all over my hands.
The cream itself smells divine and I don't tend to have to use a lot of cream as a small amount goes on an on. It is rich and creamy and feels wonderful as it sinks gently into my skin. I often suffer from dry cracked knuckles during the winter weather and Neal's Yard Remedies Citrus Hand Softener eliminates the problem for me almost instantly. I can almost feel it actually getting to work on my poor dehydrated skin.
I am not sure if I am meant to, but I also will often use this on the dry patches which tend to crop up on my elbows and knees. It softens the skin and leaves it feeling silky smooth and with a gorgeous gentle citrus aroma which seems to linger on and on for ages.
As well as working wonders on my dry skin, I also find Neal's Yard Remedies Citrus Hand Softener acts as a wonderful barrier cream. I find that if I use it before I go out into harsh weather it will actually prevent the elements from causing further damage and dehydrating my skin any more.
This is a wonderful skin softener and different from anything I have ever used previously. Yes, it is expensive, but it is worth the money and once I have finished this jar I fully intend to replenish my stocks.

Neal's Yard Remedies is a beauty brand that was born in 1981 and their products contain organic, herbal and natural materials which benefit our bodies, minds and entire well being. They strive to include the tiniest amount of synthetic ingredients possible. The company works hard to protect the environment while creating their products and they never test their creations on animals.
Citrus Hand Softener by Neal's Yard Remedies is a nourishing hand cream for dry and damaged hands. It contains a whole host of natural extracts and oils including Avocado and Blackcurrant seeds and it aims to give hard working hands a break. Neal's Yard promises that this is an intensely nourishing lotion which will revitalise and rejuvenate dry and cracked skin on your hands.
How does it work?
The moisturising action in this cream is performed by the Shea Butter. This butter has been used for centuries due to its highly hydrating properties and it is in enriched with Vitamins A, E and F. When these Vitamins are applied to the skin, they help to make it glow with health and can work towards repairing any damage that has been caused.
Some Beeswax has been included in the cream. This substance is an emollient and helps to hydrate the skin deeply. The wax coats the skin with an invisible but protective barrier which prevents future moisture from leaving the skin and it also gives it a layer of protection from external factors. The Beeswax helps to soften and nourish the hands.
Stirred into the mixture is some Avocado Oil. The purpose of this oil is to moisturise and soften the hands. The oil is enriched with Vitamins A, B, D and E and the substance helps to increase the collagen in the skin. It also contains potassium, helping to strengthen the skin and gives it an added elasticity meaning your hands will look younger for longer.
A splash of Organic Coconut Oil helps to soften the hands, heal any imperfections and protect the skin from the external elements, meaning your hands will be glowing with health. In addition, it fights against free radicals while moisturising and nourishing the skin deeply.
The Blackcurrant Seed Oil is enriched with fatty acids that fight against premature aging, help to heal scarring and repair damage that has already been caused to the skin. The oil also helps to maintain the appearance of healthy skin while soothing dry and damaged hands.
Starflower Seed Oil drizzled in the cream restores the skin on the hands back to its former glory by replenishing the moisture levels and smoothing the skin. It has soothing and anti inflammatory qualities and contains fatty acids which are essential for the development of the skins structure.
The Aloe Vera in the cream nourishes the hands with Vitamins C and E. Aloe Vera has been used for centuries because of its medicinal qualities. It helps to calm the skin on tired hands, while prolonging the natural elasticity in the skin and maintaining its suppleness. The Aloe Vera also strengthens and tones the skin, meaning that your hands will look more youthful.
The cream also contains a blast of citrus fruits, hence the name of the product. Orange Oil, Lemon Oil and Grapefruit Oil has been splashed into the lotion which are all antioxidants and have an anti aging action on the skin. They protect the skin from external factors and tone the skin on the hands.
How do you use the cream?
The cream is to be applied in the same way as a normal hand cream. You apply the lotion to dry, cracked hands to leave them feeling smoother and softer. Massage the lotion into the skin until it's disappeared. It can also be applied to dry knees and elbows and even the feet. If used on the feet, take care when walking on tiles or wooded floors afterwards to make sure you don't slip!
The cream comes in a heavy glass blue tub, as do all of the Neal's Yard products, because it protects the natural ingredients inside from being affected by the sunshine. It is opened by a screw top lid and the product is easy to access inside. It costs around £14 for 50 grams of the lotion which is 84% made of organic ingredients. It can be bought online alongside the other products in the collection which are the Citrus Hand Lotion and the Citrus Hand Wash.
All in all, this is a fantastic product if your hands feel dry and uncomfortable. It is soothing and removes uncomfortable tightness on your hands that can be caused by using cleaning products.
It has a deliciously citrus fresh aroma that lasts and although the cream is intense and nourishing, it is easily absorbed and doesn't leave your hands feeling greasy. If your hands are causing you discomfort or they are looking dull and in need of replenishment, then this is the remedy for you.

I have a number of Neal's Yard Remedies products now after receiving a gift pack for Christmas a few years ago. One of the products I received then was the citrus hand wash and I loved the smell and the performance so much that I decided to buy some of the Citrus hand softener.
I often have dry cracked hands when the weather is cold and this lotion is perfect for just that, as Neals Yard Remedies say, as well as being intensely nourishing and revitalising. All I know is that I absolutely love the smell and the results I get. The lotion has avocado, blackcurrant seed and coconut oils which are combined with nourishing shea nut butter. I love anything with shea butter as it really works for my skin and I find it very softening and a lovely soft working product.
I have to say, I can't really smell the blackcurrant seed in this lotion but I think because it is just a seed then maybe it does not add any smell. To me, this smells just like their citrus hand wash and all their other citrus products, very lemony but light and fresh. I does not however, smell like cleaning products as I think you need to be very careful with citrus smelling lotions as sometimes they do smell a bit like Cif or other lemon cleaning products.
The hand softener has a light feel to it and is not greasy in any way. It goes onto your skin really nice and soaks in well. I find it really works on my skin and I have used it on other parts of my body too such as my elbows and feet where I get really dry skin and I find it has worked on these parts too.
The lotion itself comes in a little tub with a screw top lid. The bottom half of the tub is a beautiful blue coloured glass which is their signature look. All of their bottles and products are sold in old fashioned blue bottles which I think make them look like old apothercary bottles and shops of old. The lotion is fairly expensive but I would say this is not a use everyday lotion that you slather on your body. If you use it sparingly and only on target points then it will last quite a while. A 50g tub costs £14.30 and is available in their stores or on the internet.
I have terribly dry hands and am always in the market for a hand cream that actually works. This was given to me as a gift and how grateful I am for that. Neal's Yard tick the boxes for me as they have an anti-animal testing policy too.
On first using it, the hand cream feels a bit 'loose' - like it's never going to be absorbed - but keep rubbing it in and all of a sudden it disappears into your hands and feels really absorbed and not at all greasy. It does exactly what it says it will, ie makes your hands feel soft. You don't need all that much of it either.
At around £14 for 50g it is more expensive than any other hand cream I buy, but I look out for offers from Neal's Yard which come around from time to time and it is so luxurious I do think it is worth paying extra for.
This is not a protective hand cream though - a good one to use at bedtime as it feels lovely on dry skin and my hands still feel soft in the morning. It doesn't form that protective film like some do, so washes off quite easily if it gets wet.
The packaging is an attractive and solid glass pot - nice to look at and use, but not all that convenient with a screw top lid, and too heavy to use for travelling. This is a shame as I'd love to take it away with me. However, it does make it great to give as a gift as it 'looks the part'.
