Nivea Hand SOS Intensive Balm
Advantages: Works well
When it starts to get to October and the weather has become noticeably worse and the temperatures begin to drop, the rain becomes more frequent, it gets dark early and those biting winds start up I know it is again time for me to start my yearly search for a good hand cream. Now whether it's because I don't where gloves enough or whether it's because I just have dry sensitive skin I don't know but when this cold weather arrives for the next three months the skin on my hands will get very dry, rough and sore and they will chap and sometimes bleed so finding a good cream to try and prevent this and soothe my tormented skin is really important to me. I have tried a lot in the past with varying result but when I went to Superdrug one day I saw this Nivea SOS Intensive balm on the shelf and I remember seeing it advertised on the weather spot on GMTV and I thought that it sounded like it was a strong product so decided to go with that.
It comes in a white tube that stands on the lid so all the product drains down conveniently with a dark blue flip lid which is nice and easy to use. I hate it when creams use flip lids because it's hard to put the lid back on when your hands are all greasy. It promises instant relief for extremely dry and chapped hands which sounded right up my street and it states that it's concentrated but I don't find that makes much difference because what else would you expect? Do they mean they only use all the effective ingredients and not any filler ones? I'm not sure. Once you have used about half of it the tube will go seriously out of shape and looks a bit odd. It's not something that bothers me but it just doesn't hold the shape very well. It states that this contains panthenol, glycerine and calendula oil none of which means much to me...
I really like the smell of this. Normally I go for unscented ones just in case the perfume irritates my hands but I think this only came in the one variety but it smells really nice, really fresh and clean and well creamy. It also isn't too runny which is probably where the concentrated part comes in but because of this it means that a little will not go a long way and you have to use a fair bit to cover all your hands. So you do use more than most hand creams per application but I suppose they are covered by an effective layer of ingredients rather than a layer of watery based cream. Furthermore, I find because it is concentrated it absorbs much quicker than the average hand cream. Most importantly, I find that this is effective in soothing my sore hands and it makes them feel softer and I do feel like they're being protected when I go out in the harsh winds and that this cream does actually restore the moisture. I try to use this in the morning before going outside and at bedtime so it can do its work while the skin regenerates over-night.
Would I buy this again? Yes it's one of the best I've used so far though I am also keen to try the Norwegian Formula hand cream that I have heard good things about. I can't find this on either the Boots or Superdrug website but I think it costs about £2.99 which sounds a lot as it is only small - 50ml - but it's good stuff.
Summary: The best I have found so far
