Palmer's Olive Butter Formula Concentrated Cream
Advantages: Soothing, lasts, affordable and quickly effective on sore, dry skin
Disadvantages: Residue does linger on hands after application, although your skin does get the benefit!
Another thing that made me realise I have to buck my ideas up is that, be it through wintery weather (not something that normally gives me this reaction) or stress, I have developed noticeable, irritated patches of dry skin on my shoulders and upper arms, and normal moisturiser wasn't having any effect on repairing the damage whatsoever.
Desperate times mean....cosmetics shopping! Yay! Having been a bit - okay, a lot stressed out lately, I found myself saying "sod it" to the financial situation and treating myself to some of the money I had put away from working overtime, and went shopping, where I found that Boots, Superdrug and everyone else in that line of product were having massive, "please shop with us, we'll be nice!" January offers. I duly stocked up on Palmers products when I saw that Boots had the entire range on a half-price promotion, and into my basket went a tube of their Olive Butter Formula Concentrated Cream.
"Palmers - Perfect formula, extraordinary results" claim uk.palmers.com, the website for the well-known brand of moisturising products.
Possibly better known for their cocoa butter-based products, Palmers have been a brand I have trusted for many years now. Their products are consistently luxurious and effective to my mind, and whilst they are not the cheapest moisturiser widely available on the high street, they are certainly far from being the most expensive.
Owned by the E T Drug Company, Palmers is based in America. Fittingly due to their reliance on products of the cocoa plant, they are a member of the World Cocoa Foundation, a not-for-profit organisation put in place to safeguard the sustainable production of the plant and support those farming it.
Since the success of their Cocoa Butter formula, the company have branched out into other types of product, including their Olive range from which this particular product hails.
Palmers also claim to be against animal testing. Good news for the fluffy bunnies.
This cream comes in a small, green plastic tube which stands on its flip-top cap. As with all Palmers products I find the packaging sufficient to protect the product and would be quite happy to carry this in my handbag.
As I bought this product in Boots I shall give their price for it - the half-price promotion has now ended and this has returned to a full price of £2.25 - 225 loyalty card points - for a 60g tube.
This product contains Vitamin E and antioxidants, and the back of the tube claims the following:
- "has the power to transform your skin". Using a blend of Extra Virgin Olive Oil and Vitamin E, this supposedly can aid "extra-dry, flaky skin". (Yes, I know what you're all thinking, I'm a scaly hideous monster and I shouldn't go out in public!)
- Ideal for cracked hands, knees and elbows.
- Provides immediate skin relief, repairs and revitalises, locks in moisture.
- Paraben free
The ingredients list does of course include a lot of baffling stuff but include Certified Extra Virgin Olive Oil and Shea Butter. Sounds positively tasty to me!
***WHAT'S IT LIKE TO USE?***
On flipping open the cap (quite easy, unlike some similar caps which can be quite uncomfortable to open) you can smell a gentle, inoffensive fragrance. It's not sweet or flowery, but smells perfectly nice and not overly fabricated and chemical.
Given a little squeeze, a thick, very slightly green shade of off-white cream emerges. This cream is very thick - not at all runny - and a little goes a very long way. Good news as it claims to be concentrated!
When you initially spread this over your skin the fragrance becomes more notable but I find that this soon fades away and doesn't linger on the skin for more than half an hour.
I have been using a pea-sized amount of this cream which I warm in my hands and then rub over my hideous monster skin patches. This has been soaked up by my thirsty skin very quickly on all occasions and I have also used it on my hands although I initially worried it would leave them feeling greasy. You really do NOT need much of this on your hands but if you restrain yourself this soon sinks in and stops feeling like you have a layer of moisturiser on your skin and I soon forget that I am wearing it.
However, I couldn't help but notice that within a week of daily use, my shoulders looked better. Where other, trusted moisturisers had failed miserably, this stuff had done the trick - no irritation was caused, and the skin was starting to look human again. So it was just stress, rather than some terrifying mutation. Hurrah!
***SO, PRETTY GOOD THEN?***
Well, the initial fragrance might be a little strong but it soon fades and this thick cream, once you've encouraged it to emerge from its tube, is very effective, soothing to dry skin and you can see real results within a matter of days - so for less than £3 (not to mention the bargainous sub-£2 price I snapped this up at), you can't go wrong with this product. I shall continue to use it on my hands as I have had some serious nail issues recently and I anticipate that, whilst this is obviously a slower project, this product is sure to help. I really am impressed with its healing and soothing capabilities and have noticed not just improvement in the dry skin issues but a general improvement in skin tone, and dry skin just laps this stuff up.
Load it on and you WILL feel greasy for a while but if you use this sparingly not only will it last well - it is only a small tube after all - but you will see results on problematic dry skin issues. I shall not only continue to use it to prevent a recurrence of the problem but I shall snap up other products from the Palmers Olive range (previously I have only used their Cocoa butter products) as I would like to see if their more general moisturiser has similar positive effects on my less troubled areas of skin on a day-to-day basis and then maybe, just maybe, I can get daily moisturisation into my routine in the eternal female battle against the twin evils of ageing and gravity. To war!
Time for a rating then. This gets four stars - I was tempted to award five but for the initial feeling of slight greasiness on my hands after application I am just pushed over into taking a star back. But this product works really well when applied to problem skin and therefore if winter has taken its toll or if you have recurring dry skin issues I definitely recommend this. I did worry that something so thick and with a clear fragrance might have potential to irritate already sore areas of skin but I have found it to be very soothing - something that may be down to our good friend the olive but I suspect might be the inclusion of shea butter - and I think that the overall improvement in skin tone might be due to the olive oil.
A brilliant product from Palmers, whose four-star rating is possibly unfair for, whilst there is a residual greasiness on my hands after use, that is a small price to pay for the soothing and repairing qualities this cream brings to skin and the side effects of application are well worth living with for a short period of time.
Summary: Very fast working and soothing skin treatment - equals the Palmers Cocoa Butter range in my opinion
