Palmolive Odour Neutralising Liquid Handwash
Advantages: Eliminates smells like garlic and onions, cleans hands, smells fresh
Disadvantages: Lime fragrance may be too strong for some, doesn't moisturise
Handwash is one of those everyday products that I don't tend to give a lot of thought to prior to purchasing it. It usually gets tossed into the shopping trolley on my way round the supermarket and I buy whatever what is on offer. If my daughter is with me, then we often end up with pink handwash (as she is in that phase where everything needs to be pink) or occasionally I buy blue handwash to match the décor in the kitchen/bathroom, but that is the limit of the thought that I usually put into that particular shopping decision. This particular product was purchased as part of an offer and I was attracted by the claims that it was an 'anti-odour' product, particularly the claim that it was effective against garlic and onion smells. I am an enthusiastic cook who makes most of the family meals from scratch and I tend to use a lot of garlic and onion in my cooking. I often find that the smell of these lingers on my hands throughout the evening, and sometimes into the next morning, despite washing my hands regularly and even doing the washing up.
* The Product *
Palmolive Kitchen Handwash (which is a re-branded version of the Odour Neutralising Liquid Handwash) comes in a clear plastic bottle with a white pump dispenser. The liquid handwash itself is a pale green colour. The design of the bottle is very simple - just the product name, a brief message about what it does (anti-odour, antibacterial handwash) and an image of some limes in a bowl. The consistency of the handwash is pretty much what I would expect from a product of this type - you don't need to pump out a huge amount to create a slightly bubbly lather which is easy to rub between your hands to ensure that they are properly clean. It rinses off very easily, leaving my hands feeling clean and fresh. The lime fragrance is immediately apparent on using the product and this smell lingers for a significant time on your hands after use. I am a big fan of citrus scented products, although I do usually prefer lemon and orange to lime, and I find the scent of this relatively appealing. It is perhaps a bit too limey for me, but I think it needs to have a definite scent of its own to enable it to mask less desirable food odours. It leaves my hands feeling fairly soft and doesn't dry out my skin, although if I use it a lot I do tend to follow up with a hand moisturising product just to be on the safe side.
* My Experiences *
What I really like about this product is that it is very easy to use - the pump dispenses just the right amount to cleanse your hands effectively, it rinses off well and doesn't leave any residue behind. This means that it is perfect for washing your hands in between tasks during meal preparation - i.e. between touching raw meat and chopping vegetables. However, the most impressive feature of the product is that it really does seem to eliminate odours. If I wash my hands with this after chopping up garlic and onions, it removes that irritating lingering scent from my hands and leaves them smelling fresh and citrussy. Even after I have done one of my least favourite kitchen tasks, cleaning out the garlic crusher, my hands don't smell of garlic once I have washed them with this. It is also anti-bacterial which is an added bonus. One word of warning though, it is not a solution to all those annoying lingering food preparation issues - it does not get rid of all the effects of chopping fresh chilli without a bit of effort, so make sure you have washed your hands several times before touching your eyes after chopping chillis!
* Price and Purchasing *
This is a product which is often on offer at the supermarket. The recommended retail price is £1.99 but you should be able to get it cheaper than that by shopping around. It is currently available for 99p at Tesco.
* Final Thoughts *
Overall, this is a product which I would definitely recommend. It does everything that you would expect from a product of this type. It leaves hands feeling clean, fresh and free from all those kitchen odours which can end up lingering on your hands. As an added bonus, as you don't need to use that much for effective cleaning, it lasts for a relatively long time meaning that it is very good value for money. It is definitely a product which I will purchase again in the future as I can see the benefits of using it - after all, nobody wants to go round smelling of garlic!
Summary: A great handwash for the kitchen, especially if you like to cook
