As a lot of you will already know I am the Box Secretary for the Llandudno Lifeboat Guild. This means that I go round to the various hotels, shops and restaurants that have our collecting boxes, empty them, count the cash and give out a receipt. I then balance the total cash, bag it up all the cash and pay it into the bank. As you can imagine my hands get rather grubby when I am doing this particular job!

Obviously this isn't a problem when I am at home as I can just give my hands a good wash with soap and water but when I am out and can't get to a sink I need a bit of help.

This is where Radox Clean and Protect Antibacterial Hand Gel comes in. With this I can clean my hands without water!

A 50ml container of this gel will currently set you back £1.31 in Tesco's or Asda so it is marginally more expensive than the Carex ones that I have also tried as they are just £1 each.

The pale blue / green gel comes in a little clear plastic container with a pump action dispenser at the top. It is a neat little thing and would fit easily into your handbag or, in my case, into my bag where I keep my collecting box emptying kit!

On the front of the container there is the familiar green Radox logo together with the name of the product and the claim that it 'kills 99% of bacteria'. On the back there is a list of ingredients and instructions for use.

To use the gel all you have to do is depress one side of the top of the container which then opens a small hole on the opposite side and as you depress it further a small amount of gel is dispensed which you catch in the palm of your free hand. The container is so small and neat that it is easy to operate with one hand.

You then rub your hands together and the gel disappears into your skin cleaning your hands and killing the bacteria. It dries very quickly and after use my hands feel soft (the gel contains moisturiser) and clean and they smell fresh too as the gel also contains thyme and tea tree oil. It certainly beats the smell of dirty coins on my hands, which really is horrible.

Whether the 99% of bacteria were in fact killed is impossible to say and, after handling coins that have been heaven knows where, I would want to give my hands a good wash before I touched food for example. Having said that I would certainly recommend this gel for a basic clean of the hands when you have no access to soap and water and even if it only kills some of the bacteria it's better than none isn't it?

I always keep some in my bag.
