Hits the sweet spot every time

This Estwing 24c Curved Claw Hammer was first recommended to my by a friend who is a chippy. Previously I had though most hammers were much of a muchness. How little did I know. The average homebase or b&q cheap own brand hammer is fine to have around if you hang the odd picture or dabble in extreme pest control. But if you are looking for a quality item and you make your living with your tools you really shouldn't scrimp. At around £35 to £40 it is considerably more expensive than most but it will likely last a lifetime. This is by far the most well balanced I have very used. Knocking in nails takes minimal effort and the balance helps you to settle into an effortless rhythm. At 24oz it should feel cumbersome in your hand but doesn't at all. The hammer is a solid one piece (no chance of a head flying off) with the grip constructed of leather washers which have been riveted. This may sound odd but it really does feel great in your hand offering excellent grip even over extended periods of use. The grip is also polished and coated with lacquer which makes it look great as well (like the walnut dash on an old Jag in my mind).

The claw end is excellent. The standard carpenter design is hard to improve upon and removes nails time after time with ease. The solid one piece forged steel packs a serious heft at 24 oz and drives even the biggest of nails with minimal effort. The head it self is of a good size with a sizable sweet spot which sings out beautifully as you perfectly connect with a nail head. A really well made , quality item that I'm sure will stand the test of time. A design classic in the hammer world that is hard to improve upon. A serious piece of kit for anyone with an eye for high end hand tools that will serve you well for year after year. A true 5 star item.
