I upgraded to this 12lb monster from Roughneck after somebody went walkabout with my non brand old style one while I was working on a house renovation. At the time it was on offer at Screwfix for a bargain £25.
It really is a fantastic piece of kit. The head of the hammer weighs in at a hefty 12lb and is made from tempered and hardened drop forged alloy steel. This helps to increase the life span of the hammer , helps it to withstand constant heavy use. The shaft is made from solid fibreglass which is covered in a rubber like material which offers excellent levels of grip. The fibreglass shaft also helps to keep the overall weight down which makes swinging this hammer far easier than alternatives with either steel or wooden shafts. Although the grip is excellent I do find it pretty hard to find a good rhythm while driving fence posts as it is far harder to slide your hands over the handle compared to a standard wooden shaft. But this is offset by the increased level of grip while using for demolition type tasks. The head is attached and moulded to the shaft by an high strength industrial epoxy which holds the two together far more securely than a standard wooden shaft with removable head. It really is a very easy sledgehammer to swing with force. The shaft is very comfortable to grip and the overall balance feels very good. With the shaft being made of fibreglass vibrations are also hugely reduced compared with a standard sledge. This makes the hammer far less tiring to use and coupled with the great balance far less strenuous on your body.
A well made , solid and dependable tool. Certainly won't be going back to a wooded shaft sledge hammer again.
