“ Avon / A pretty polka dot shopper bag from Avon Country Rose brand. „
I am always being inundated with avon catalogues from friends, family, neighbours and work colleagues who all seem to have decided that avon is a good way to make money. I try to buy something from each of them to show my support but I have literally too many people in my life doing it that I usually can only afford something small.
I got the Country Rose bag as I was looking for something small to order from one of the catalogues and this was cheap and I actually liked the look of it and I had enough make-up and skin care products at the time so this seemed ideal.
When it arrived I was really pleased with it and I actually do use it quite often though not so much lately as it is more of a spring and summer bag than a winter one especially when it rains.
The bag is a cotton shopper bag and the only thing that differentiates it from the hundreds of others is that it has a particularly lovely pattern on it. I really like Kath Kidston and this is very similar in pattern to some of those as it has a lovely retro look to it that looks a little old fashioned but done in a modern way.
The pattern is made up of loads of different coloured polka dots and this effect is really striking but although the colours are bright they aren't too brassy and brash. The whole effect is just really sweet looking and cute.
The bag isn't huge but it is big enough to go to the supermarket and get a few groceries in it. You wouldn't be able to use this to get your weekly shop in but as something to put a few eggs and bread in it is fine. The handles feel sturdy and are well stitched together so it doesn't feel like they will snap but I still wouldn't put too much in it just in case.
This is just a sweet little shopper bag that looks a lot nicer than the ones available in the supermarket. The pattern is really sweet and it is practical enough for a few groceries at a time and it looks nice when I am carrying it. I think this was only about £5 which seems about right for this bag as although it is only cotton it is really nice and well made.
No woman can have too many bags as far as I am concerned and I have decided to never use another carrier bag again. Instead I use canvas bags or bags for life. It is not only because I want to save the planet a little but also because carrier bags are rubbish at holdoing any weight and these are not.
I saw this bag in the Avon catalogue and decided to buy a couple as I was after sturdy bags for shopping. The design of the bag is great, polka dots are cheerful and happy, the background colour is a creamy shade which shows off the bright circles nicely. The bag is made from a canvas which seems to be very strong and has held up very well to the amounts of weight I regularly put in it. The handles are quite short for my liking, you can just get the bag over your shoulder, but it's not happy to sit there and holding it in your hand it's a bit too long. It is more a arm bag like the lady in the picture which depending on the weight inside isn't always comfortable.
The handles are roughly 45cms and the bag as a whole is a nice 36cm x 39cm x 11cm size. I only use these bags for shopping so doing the bag up isn't an issue. If you were to use this as an everyday bag, I would feel my items are a bit too much on show with no popper or zip as security.
Overall the bag is great, it has been subjected to much use and hasn't frayed or split in any seams. The bottom of the bag is prone to wear and tear but even so it is still in good condition. It has become a little grubby, I have not put it in the washing machine but I have hand washed it though and it still performs nicely. A good sturdy, reliable bag which is great and pretty at the same time.
~ Avon Country Rose Bag ~
Many regular readers of my reviews will be aware by now that I work part time as an Avon representative when my poor health allows. This means that I have great access to many of the Avon brands, displayed on the glossy pages of their regular brochures.
One Avon brand that has caught my eye over the past year or so has been the "Country Rose" brand of home ware items and gift ideas. I have purchased a few items from this brand now, mainly for gifts, but one or two of the items stood out for me, as I found they were in a sort of 'Shabby Chic' style which I think is very attractive.
Noticing an attractive shopping bag in the range some time ago, I felt the price tag was quite high when the item was first launched by Avon. I therefore decided to hold off to see if it came down in price, which of course it did. I was delighted to be able to purchase the bag for the much-reduced sum of only £4, which I thought was reasonable value considering it seemed to be of a reasonable quality.
The bag arrived from Avon in a see-through polythene package, and was folded in a sort of square shape to make it easy to transport. The bag's fabric is what is probably best described as being a 'canvas-like' material, with the outer being cotton. There is a small 'patch' sewn onto the bottom corner of the bag detailing the recognisable "Country Rose" emblem.
The patterned fabric is really nice and is, as far as I am concerned, what gives the bag its appeal. The colourful polka dots that appear on the bag are quite brightly coloured and have remained so, not fading easily even after months of use. The coloured dots are much brighter than how they appear in the picture supplied by Dooyoo, but this is an observation rather than a criticism. Dots of bright 'brick' red, pale blue, fuchsia pink, lime green and peach mingle together to create an attractive pattern over the bag's material.
The canvas background too looks much paler in the Dooyoo picture than it actually is, and it has been described on various internet sites as being white in colour which isn't the case at all, it's actually a cream-like colour, or what would probably be described in a catalogue as being 'ecru' or 'natural' or some such neutral shade, but it's nowhere near being white. This colour co-ordinates beautifully with the brightly-coloured dots to give a wonderfully 'Shabby Chic' shopper, in my opinion.
The bag's straps are made of the same material as the rest of the bag and they have proven to be surprisingly robust. Even though the bag has been forced to carry considerable weight at times, the stitching around the handles remains intact and hasn't frayed or become loose. The handles are approx 45cm in length, although are obviously attached to the bag in an 'arc' design to allow you to insert your hand or arm through the bag to carry it.
The bag has proven to be a useful purchase, providing ample carrying space within it's roomy confines. Measuring 36cm across and 39cm in height, the Country Rose bag is on a par with many other 'Tote' style bags that I currently own. What sets THIS bag apart from these other offerings however is the width, which measures approx 11cm. This little bit of 'give' in the bag allows more to be packed within it, which makes it more convenient to use than other, more 'oblong' bags that are just sewn together at the seams. The few extra inches in the bag's width provide more in the way of 'breathing space' and thus, the bag is more useful and convenient than others I own.
I find too that the canvas material is robust enough to have withstood plenty of use without showing any real wear and tear, but without feeling 'heavy' or cumbersome to carry about. The light feeling of the fabric allows the bag to be folded into quarters which makes it the ideal companion for shopping trips or grocery shopping, thanks to it being so easy to transport. I also find the bag very useful for packing into my suitcase when I am holidaying abroad as it is the perfect size for shoving 'beach time' items into, such as sunglasses, sun cream, book and a bottle of water. The lightweight - yet robust - fabric makes the Country Rose bag a very practical addition to my suitcase for times at the pool or the beach.
My only quibble where this point is concerned is that I feel it would have been practical and helpful of Avon to include a small pocket in the bag's interior, preferably with a zipper closure. This would have led me to store my hotel room key or a small amount of cash in the bag and would have added to the convenience of the item, but alas there are no pockets to be found in the bag's interior. To be fair, there is a small 'tab' of Velcro to be found in the centre of the bag's opening which allows a small seal to be maintained throughout use, but really it doesn't feel secure enough for me to keep a purse or wallet in there, particularly when I am abroad, shopping at markets and being extra vigilant of pick-pockets.
The bag has NOT to be washed in the washing machine, presumably because the cotton fabric would shrink. Certainly, I have not tried this myself although there have been very few grubby marks evident after several months use. I think I would stick to giving the bag a sponge down if I felt it was necessary, although to be honest I'd probably just replace it with a different shopping bag if I felt it was looking too grubby.
As @ the time of writing (September 2012), the Avon Country Rose bag is not available on the Avon website, although it did appear in a recent 'Sale' brochure supplied with the usual Avon Campaign. Your local Avon Representative should be able to track the bag down for you without much fuss, but if you prefer to purchase it directly, you can find several listings on eBay (www.eBay.co.uk) where prices start at around £4 plus postage costs. Alternatively, you can purchase the bag on Amazon (www.amazon.co.uk) where the current price is £7 plus postage costs.
