Bloomingdales Little Brown Bag
My aunt went to New York and visited the Bloomingdales store while she was over there and brought me back a Little Brown Bag as a present which I was very grateful for!
Bloomingdales is a posh, American department store found in 1860, I would likely to compare it to Selfridges or Harrods as a comparison in the UK. It is owned by Macy's Inc who also have department stores called Macy's across the USA.
The Bloomingdales Little Brown Bag is an iconic Bloomingdales product and many people buy them as souvenirs from their time in the store. Having not been to Bloomingdales myself I feel a bit silly having a bag but it is a very nice and handy gift.
The bag is made of a rubberised plastic material which is shaped and very similar looking to the classic square paper take-away bags! My bag has measurements of approximately 20 cm x 20 cm x 15 cm. You also get larger bags in this style called Medium brown Bag and Big Canvas Bag, but I think this little one looks really stylish and cute.
The material that the bag is made for it totally water resistant and wipe clean. It is a light brown/beige overall colour with Little Brown Bag written in Bold dark brown font that covers the entire front and bag of the bag. Down the side panels of the bag is the Bloomingdales name and website. The bag is very recognisable and as I have said, iconic.
The bag has two thin dark brown plastic handles for carrying it around. I tend to use my Bloomingdales Little Brown Bag for carrying my lunch to work, it is not really big or secure enough to be used as a handbag or a shoulder bag, so I do struggle to find uses for it! However it looks cute and is a very well made item that will last a lifetime I think. The Little Brown Bag costs £19.70 on the Bloomingdales website and is available in Bloomingdale stores if you are in America!
The American department store Bloomingdales opened way back in 1872 on East 56th street, its rapid growth in popularity led to the store moving to 59th street where it has remained to this day. The store is world famous and has featured in a variety of American films and TV shows cementing itself in popular culture. Their iconic "brown bags" appeared in the1970's and the store still produces them to this day. "Small Brown Bags" for cosmetics, "Large Brown Bag" for linen & pillows and the "Medium Brown Bag" for everything in between. I have always wanted to visit New York and get a proper paper Bloomingdales Brown Bag, my lovely Mum did the next best thing, she bought me this official plastic reproduction Little Brown Bag which I am reviewing today.
The bag is made of shiny plastic, it is light brown in colour with " Little Brown Bag" written on the front and back in bold letters, " Bloomingdales" runs up the sides along with their website address. It has white stitching all around. The handle is dark brown and made out of a faux leather fabric. The bag opens and closes in the middle with a little popper.
I think the bag looks really cool and trendy but it is not really practical for everyday use. I find the bag is perfect to use when I am travelling light, but I tend to carry quite a lot in my handbag so need something a little larger. It is worth noting that the same bag is available in Medium and Large. There are no inside pockets, so when using this bag I always have to search around in there to find what I need, be it my purse or keys and this can be a little annoying.
Opening the bag is incredibly easy with there just being one little popper in the centre, but as there is no protection either side of the popper I have found that the contents of the bag can get rather wet if caught in a downpour. I would much prefer a zip to close up the bag and feel this would make the bag a little more secure. The actual plastic part of the bag is indeed water proof, so its fine to use during light rain showers, but I still tend to use the bag in the sunnier months just to be on the safe side.
The quality of the bag is fantastic, the stitching is very strong and has not come apart, the handles are also sewn on well and have not come away or frayed. I have had this bag for a number of years now and it is still in an excellent condition, although as I mentioned earlier I do only use it occasionally.
It is incredibly easy to clean, a quick wipe over with a damp cloth and the bag is looking as good as new.
I absolutely love this bag and was over the moon when I received it as a gift, its not one I use on a regular basis but that's not to say its not a brilliant bag. If you are looking for a practical everyday bag then this one probably isn't for you, but if you are looking for a cute bag to use when travelling light then Bloomingdales Little Brown Bag would be a good choice. There a few reviews on the Bloomingdales website that suggest using it as a lunch bag which I think is a brilliant idea. I give it 4 Dooyoo stars out of five, because I really do love it even if its not always my first choice of handbag.
As this was a gift I am unsure of how much my mum paid for it. It is currently priced at £19.69 on the Bloomingdales website with a £5.00 flat rate postage charge. A quick look on Amazon and eBay shows the prices vary and there are a lot of fakes out there so beware.
A colleague at work has had one of these adorable little bags for a few years which she actually bought from Bloomingdales in New York and which she uses to bring her lunch in every day. I have admired this for ages but unfortunately as I haven't been lucky enough to visit Bloomingdale's myself I cheated and bought one from ebay. I won this on an auction for £7.50 which I think is a good price as they can go for up to about £15 on ebay. You should be careful however buying on line as I am sure there are quite a few fakes on there. You can also buy them online direct from Bloomingdales for £19.69 however I don't think I would have paid that much for it.
I have had the bag now since April and have just loved using it. These bags were produced to replicate the famous large paper carrier bags which Bloomingdale's have always used and are a great souvenir although I am sure that a lot of people (myself included) have not been there but just like to pretend they have!
It is made of a very thick plastic but is still flexible enough to fit quite a lot in. The stitching is very neat and good quality all around the edges of the bag and the handles feel secure and safe enough and feel as though they would withstand carrying a full bag. It is a light tan colour and has the words 'little brown bag' on the front and back in a darker shade of brown. The Bloomingdale logo and website address is printed on the sides of the bag. They also do this bag in pink which is called 'little hot pink bag' and which is striking bright pink with white writing and a clear plastic handle.
I take my lunch to work in it every day and can easily fit in my sandwiches, a yoghurt, packet of crisps and fruit and a drink. If I am not taking another bag to work I will sometimes put my notebook, pens and other bits and pieces in there and all this fits in without cramming everything in. However as the bag is open with no zip or other fastener is probably not suitable to carry your purse in or other valuables unless you put them underneath other things at the bottom of the bag and even then it would be quite easy for someone to pop their hand in. It wouldn't really be suitable for shopping as you just wouldn't be able to fit much in unless you were only buying small items. It has a flat base so sits on the floor or a flat surface securely without you worrying that it might tip over.
The handles aren't long enough for you to carry on your shoulder but as they are a soft plastic it is comfortable to hold. As the bag is made of plastic it is easily wiped with a piece of kitchen roll or a damp cloth but I haven't had any mishaps yet! I haven't had my bag long but I have used it every day and there is no visible wear. The one my friend has been using for a few years is also in fantastic condition so I hope mine matches that.
I think this is a lovely little bag which is ideal to take your lunch to work but I think there is also a little bit of prestige about it as it is from Bloomingdale's. Maybe one day I will be able to go there myself!
I've had a couple of the Bloomingdale's 'little brown bags' over the years, and when we were in New York earlier this year I bought a couple of 'little brown bags' as gifts for friends, and a new one for myself at the same time! The 'little brown bag' is modeled on the famous Bloomingdale's paper carrier bags, which come in 'little brown bag' size, 'medium brown bag' size, and 'large brown bag' size. I'm sure that most people will have seen someone carrying around one of the popular shiny plastic Bloomingdale's souvenir 'little brown bags'.
The 'little brown bags' are currently $24 plus tax in Bloomingdale's, but I do know that I only paid $20 plus tax for these at the start of this year. And I have to admit that I think that these have increased in price dramatically, I'm fairly sure that when I bought my last 'little brown bag' around 5 years ago I only paid around $12 or maybe $14 - I guess that everything goes up in price though hey!
So what do you get for your $24 (plus tax)?
The Bloomingdale's 'little brown bag' is a shiny patent tote bag resembling the little size Bloomingdale's carrier bag. It's made of a shiny vinyl which is waterproof, and so the rain just runs off and any spills will also just easily wipe off. It's open top though so if you get caught in a rain shower than the rain will get in the top of the bag if you don't have a brolly. Another thing to consider with the open top is the safety aspect, I always make sure to put my valuables in the bottom of the bag with the rest of my junk on the top of them, this then makes things harder and slower to find, but I think that it keeps them safer and so I'm happy to spend the extra few minutes scrabbling around to find something as it means that they aren't just sitting there waiting for some opportunistic thief to lift them off the top. Most of the time I do use this as my handbag for the day as it will fit in everything that I need. l also sometimes use it as an extra small bag, to carry my lunch, a spare pair of shoes, a book or magazine etc.
The bag itself is a light brown colour, with 'little brown bag' written on both the front and the back in chocolate brown, it also has 'bloomingdales' written on each of the two sides of the bag. The two carry straps are chocolate brown. My only gripe with the bag is that the corners of the bag are actually quite sharp and can give you a nasty bruise if you catch yourself with a corner of the bag, I've had many a bruise from knocking myself with the corners of my bag.
The bag stands on a flat base so that you can put it on the floor or on a chair without worrying about it toppling over. It's really durable and easy to clean, both inside and out, as any spills just wipe off. Mine does have a some scratches on the bottom from placing it on the ground but not too many that it looks tatty. It also does have a few ink stains and make up spill stains on the interior, but that's really my fault for not putting the tops back on pens, and keeping make up rattling around in the bottom of my bag. The handles are securely attached, I've carried tonnes of stuff around in this and the handles are still perfectly attached to the bag. The carry handles can start to split after time, however it did take 5 years for the handles on my last 'little brown bag to start to split, so I reckon that's fairly good going!
I'd definitely recommend the Bloomingdale's 'little brown bags', and I think that they make a perfect little souvenir from a trip to the US as they are exclusive to Bloomingdale's.
The Little Brown Bag is a famous bag from Bloomingdale's department store in the big apple...New York City. The store wraps it's purchases in brown paper bags identical to the design of the one in this picture and somewhere along the way someone thought it would be a good idea to make a long-lasting plastic version of the bag for general retail (in a similar way to Harrod's bags). Knowing my love of shopping a kindly friend brought this back from New York for me when they went on a trip there a few years back. You can also buy it on the Bloomingdale's website for £15.87. The bag is less than 30cm in height and width and about 15cm depth.
Obviously I was delighted to get a nice gift from a friend who had been to New York but I can't help feeling as though this wasn't really my souvenir (as I hadn't been to Bloomingdale's myself) if that makes sense? The bag is very well made, the plastic is thick and durable and all of the stitching is of high quality. The handles could take some serious weight and I often used it for small notebooks for work. You can only carry the bag by hand, you could not put it over your shoulder as the handles are far too small. Due to the size of the item, you are fairly limited to what you can put in it. As I said, I often put my notebook, diary etc. for work in there. I would also put my lunch in there and to be honest it is the ideal size for a lunch bag. The lack of zip or popper on the top is not helpful to keep the food in your bag particularly well. On the whole, other than being a souvenir or lunch bag, the item for me was just not useful. It wasn't like you could use it in the supermarket to save using plastic bags as it was far too small. The lack of zip or poppers made it difficult to carry smaller items just in case the bag tipped over, everything would fall out easily. To be honest I would never go out and buy a bag of this size myself and certainly wouldn't spend nearly £16 on it. I do understand that it is a souvenir but for me it ended up just sitting in the cupboard doing nothing but becoming a house for my gloves and winter hats.
Whilst I think this is a well made bag, I can't really recommend it in terms of practicalities as there are very few functions it could perform well. As a souvenir I might prefer the Medium Brown Bag which is slightly larger and at least has the functionality to carry larger books or paperwork. In terms of quality I'd give it five stars, in terms of price 3 stars and in terms of functionality 1 star. 3 stars overall but I certainly wouldn't buy one or buy one as a souvenir for someone else.
The "little brown bag" is one of Bloomingdale's signature products. Bloomingdale's is an American department store owned by Macy's. The first department store was opened in 1872. The current headquarters is at 1000 Third Avenue, New York City, but there are now 41 stores and 3 outlets all across America.
The "little brown bag" is a souvenir tote bag made and sold by Bloomingdale's. It is made of patented plastic. The bag looks exactly as it appears in the picture above. The bag is a light brown/tan colour with the words "little brown bag" printed on the front and back in dark brown. Printed on the 2 sides of the bag is the Bloomingdale's logo and website address.
I purchased my little brown bag on a recent trip to New York. I wanted the bag mainly as a souvenir. I cannot remember the exact price but it was somewhere between $15-20. It can be bought on the Bloomingdale's website for £15.87 (www.bloomingdales.com).
When I got home from my holiday I decided that I was going to use the bag for taking my packed lunch to work. I think this bag is great for this purpose as it is the perfect size for me to fit in a sandwich, a yoghurt, a bottle of water and a couple of pieces of fruit. It is also the perfect size to fit in a tupperware container or an old plastic takeaway container for days when I am taking pasta or salad for lunch. The bag is not insulated however this is not a problem for me as when I arrive in work I take my lunch out of the bag and put it into the fridge.
What I love about this bag for use as a lunch bag is that it is made of plastic and is therefore waterproof. This means that if there are any lunch spillages, it is easily cleaned up. I also regularly give the inside of my bag a spray with antibacterial cleaner and wipe it clean which reassures me that it is clean enough for my lunch!
Whilst I only purchased this bag in August, on a previous trip to New York in 2008 I bought the same bag as a present for my mum. She has been using this bag regularly for the same use, to take her lunch to work, for the past 4 years. The bag is still in perfect condition and looks identical to my brand new bag. It is therefore very durable and stands the test of time, making it great value for money.
Aside from using this bag for my packed lunch, I probably would not use it much, as in my opinion it is too small to take shopping with you. I think it is nice as a little gift bag for giving somebody a present in, especially if the present has been bought in America!
Also available in the range is a "little pink bag" which is the same as the brown one but it is hot pink in colour and has the writing on it in white. There is also a "medium brown bag" which is bigger in size and costs £27.78 on the website and would be suitable for anyone who wants to use this as a shopper bag.
I really love my little brown bag and know I will still be using it for my packed lunch in years to come! It is a great reminder of a lovely holiday.
Thanks for reading/rating and I hope you found my review useful.
