Another birthday present Hollie received from a little school friend back in June was this sweet little coin purse from Disney's Minnie Mouse Nautical collection, I've never seen anything from this range before but it's a lovely little twist on a classic character - looking on Google there are several items available all with similar names, the coin purse Hollie has is circular with a zip which is long enough to ensure the purse opens wide enough for small children to dip their hands in and grab their money without risking dropping the coins.
The design is lovely; a blue and white striped background which instantly looks 'navy-like' and a picture of Minnie's face on the front, only instead of wearing her usual bow she has on a red polka dot sailors cap which has been placed at a jaunty angle with a flower poking out of the top. It's quite a somber looking purse compared to the various others Hollie owns, most of which are very brightly coloured, but the splashes of red amongst the navy blue, black and white background really brighten it up.
The purse is made of a PVC type plastic with a fabric strip where the zip is located, the edge of the purse is reinforced with a raised and folded section of the same PVC. I'm surprised the decoration and Minnie Mouse picture are only on the front of the purse with the back being plain navy blue - this makes it quite dark in design when viewed from the back, personally I would have rather seen Disney incorporate at least the stripes into the back of the purse as it looks a little 'unfinished' to me. The inside of the purse is simply the back of the PVC but it has been waxed slightly to give a still smooth but slightly rougher feel, I'm not sure of the reason for this change of texture but most kids purses seem to have it so there must be one!
As far as durability goes, the purse is lasting well so far. Admittedly it's not quite three months old yet but has been used plenty of times during the summer school holidays when Hollie has money of her own to spend on one of out outings. The zip is stitched very tightly to the body of the purse and I've never noticed it stick when Hollie is opening it up despite being sewn to the circular edge, it's quite a chunky zip with large teeth that are spaced relatively far apart from one another so this helps with the ease of use - although I think the zip pull is a little small which isn't ideal on a purse designed for children from as young as three years old, Hollie is a rather dexterous six year old and I've noticed even she fumbles sometimes as she tries to get a grip on the zip to pull it open so this is something which needs to be addressed. Unfortunately it's a solid metal zip pull without a ring at the base, this means you can't even attach a keyring to the zip to aid with grippiness and make for a smoother unzipping/zipping action.
The purse isn't huge, I'd say it's an average size for a child's coin purse and measures roughly 3" from one side to the other with the purse being around 3/4" in depth. It holds a fair few coins, Hollie has never had to transport enough money to fill it and the most she's ever carried in it was £4 in assorted silver when we went to Cadbury World recently - and then the clever little sausage left it in my handbag all day so mum paid for all the goodies, no flies on her! Due to the fact that the zip travels a good way down each side of the purse I'd be loathe to let her carry too many coins (or any notes at all) as I'd be worried about them spilling out when she opened her purse, not because I'm a tightwad who can't afford to lose a few 5p pieces but because children get so upset when they lose their money and I hate to see Hollie cry!
I think it's a cute little purse, and more importantly Hollie loves it. Like most little girls she has lots of assorted bags and purses so this isn't something she uses every single day, for school she favours a larger Hello Kitty coin purse which is easier for her to find and grab out of the purse box but I've noticed she often uses her nautical Minnie Mouse one if we're popping out to the shop and she's raided her money box for a comic and bar of chocolate. She dropped it into a muddy puddle one day last week and this proved that the purse doesn't let water in (it wasn't submerged and I doubt if water even got near to the zip), it was easy enough to clean with a quick wipe over being all it took to remove the muddy splatters from the plastic.
I have my eye on a nautical Minnie 'handbag' for Hollie as part of her Christmas present; a quick glance online has brought up several options for expanding on this range including school style backpacks, PE bags and even a 'cosmetics case' (which actually looks identical to this purse but appears to be supplied with a selection of bobbles and hair clips).
I bought this purse from the Disney Store a few weeks ago with the matching bag.
Most of the purse is pretty pink colour with small white spots on and although this is just the background of the design it is not busy looking as it sounds. There is a large picture of Minnie Mouse which has the head on the front of the purse and below the head on the back. I think this looks really effective and is a lot nicer than squashing Minnie onto one side. Minnie mouse is in blues and pinks which is different than the original but I really like it. I particularly like how her skin is blue glitter and her pink bow has sequins on making it look a lot more girly. Next to Minnie's head it says 'I love Minnie' with a denim heart and some blue stones around the heart. The design is very much the same as the bag.
The purse is made from a good quality fabric and is quite thick which makes it stronger. It is approximately 20cm by 10cm which is big for a purse as my previous one was less than half the size, because of the size it is very spacy inside and notes and coins fit in easily with room to spare. There is a zipped pocket in the middle for coins and room either side of the pocket for notes. Along one side there are places for cards, there are six spaces which is plenty for me but you can fit more than one card in each space, I have two cards in one.
The zip goes all the way around the top three sides of the purse but when you open the purse it only goes so far so that notes don't fall out. The zip is easy to do up and doesn't get stuck like some zips do on corners. Hanging off the zip is a blue heart which looks pretty and is similar to the keying on the bag.
The purse is available from the Disney Store for £12. I think this is expensive for a purse, especially as the bag was only £20, but I had to buy it because if I changed my mind I wouldn't be able to go back so easily.
I really like this purse and hope it lasts a long time. It is the prettiest purse i've owned.
